And Moonlapse Vertigo, and White Cluster.

Seriously good album. :p While individual songs may not be Opeths strongest, the album as a whole really shines to me.

Darkness 01-03-2006 04:24 PM

What about Benighted? That's 3rd best after The Moor and Face Of Melinda for me. :D

Jude 01-03-2006 04:32 PM
I don't like Face Of Melinda as much as everyone here seems to.. the distorted parts are awesome, but a lot of the accoustic parts don't grab me like most Opeth does. It's nice, but not a favorite.
I kind of feel this way too, the acoustic parts aren't really remarkable, I think it's the vocal melodies that make the first half of the song.

About song titles...let's discuss strange Opeth song titles that we can't figure out why they're called that.

Like all of Orchid
Advent
Nectar
Godhead's Lament
Moonlapse Vertigo
The Leper Affinity
Harvest
Wreath
BTPISIO
Harlequin Forest

Darkness 01-03-2006 04:34 PM

Doesn't Harlequin Forest have to do with the character in the story going through a forest titled just that?

What about the Funeral Portrait and Patterns in the Ivy II...

Theres probably more, but I can't think of any. Probably some off Damnation.

Yeah, like To Rid The Disease.

ok lateralus 01-03-2006 04:51 PM

hah I have no idea what is the reasoning behind the title "The Apostle in Triumph". It sure sounds cool, though.

Darkness 01-03-2006 04:56 PM

Didn't Mikeal say that Blackwater Park (I think) was the first album he named all the songs before writing the lyrics?

Stoo 01-03-2006 05:07 PM

Was it not the album he named before writing any songs?

I'm not sure. The more I think about it, the less every Opeth song title makes sense.

TojesDolan 01-03-2006 05:09 PM

Probably.

I don't understand the reason for "The drapery falls" but oh well.

Darkness 01-03-2006 05:30 PM
I'm not sure. The more I think about it, the less every Opeth song title makes sense.
Same... oh well, his lyrics rock either way.

The ones that make sense, anyway.

Did you used to be Darkness of Greed? Jeez too many people have name changes.

Darkness 01-03-2006 05:48 PM

Yes, I was hacked, made this different account, and got it merged.

vashts80 01-03-2006 08:56 PM

Weehee, I'm finally back. After getting haxxed, making a second account (that never got used btw) and now coming back. Wee. Anyway, I've fallen in love with TBYF. Amazing song.

Darkness 01-03-2006 09:36 PM

I suggest a change of avatar...

lost_profits 01-03-2006 10:07 PM
It's much in the same style as Blackwater Park, but better. BWP suffers from some rather weak sections (a little of TDF, some of Dirge, much of Funeral Portrait) whereas Still Life kicks hard the whole way through.

And it has The Moor.
See for me its the other way around. Still Life suffers from something I can't put my finger on. I find Godhead's Lament a bit lacking, Serenity Painted Death was one of my favs but it's lost its appeal to me. I enjoy Moonlapse Vertigo more than either of the two.

I'd say Blackwater Park is Opeth's most consistent album. Even though The Funeral Portrait might not be the quintessential Opeth song, not one second of any song was wasted on BWP. They just complement each other perfectly.

Pfff.

Dirge for November.
The Funeral Portrait.

TojesDolan 01-03-2006 10:13 PM

I've only heard two songs out of Still life, and I love them both. (The moor, face of melinda).

However I want to wait until I buy the album so I can enjoy it big time. Indeed.

I just fell in love with Damnation after I watched the lamentations album. The lyrics are mushy yet so greatly made.
Pfff.

Dirge for November.
The Funeral Portrait.
Dirge for november has an amazing intro. It's one of my fave songs.

Darkness 01-03-2006 10:15 PM

Dirge for November has some of the most beautifull parts on the album, but the structure of the song and the way it goes super soft THEN BAM HEAVY then super soft again I'm not crazy about. It should have flowed better...

Killtacular 01-03-2006 10:24 PM

I really don't like it too much at all.

Toaster 01-03-2006 10:25 PM

I really dislike the intro to Dirge For November. Mikael's singing is so off-key, it's painful. The Funeral Portrait isn't the most sophisticated Opeth song, but it rocks quite decently.

Godheads Lament sucks.

MidnightRider 01-03-2006 10:25 PM

I love Dirge For November, but no one else seems to like it. I think BWP would be flawless without The Funeral Portrait.
The more I think about it, the less every Opeth song title makes sense.
Yeah, they're pretty strange for the most part. I've sat and thought about what Godhead's Lament could possibly mean for like 30 minutes before and not gotten anywhere.
Godheads Lament sucks.
Boo! The intro riff can be a little annoying at times, but other than that it's a great song.

denboy 01-03-2006 10:38 PM
Pfff.

The Funeral Portrait.
Those two, oddly enough, are some of my favorite Opeth songs.

Yeah that riff really drives me up the wall. But I'm mainly bugging some of the older regulars in this thread.

Do you really not like it though? I personally think that opening riff is one of Opeth's best. It sounds really evil and frantic to me.

vashts80 01-03-2006 10:53 PM

I do believe, that I'm going to do TBYF as my song in the last talent show. It just seems so fitting, since I'll be graduating that school and going onto high school.

Yeah I donno, sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Overall the song is pretty average to me. I think it's pretty overrated in the Opeth community. And we have this kind of joke where I bug everyone about it...

The off-key singing is what appeals to me.

A lot of raw emotion. With no guidelines of... you know. Yep that exactly.
