I wouldn't say that at all! Opeth was the band that brought me into the genre and prepared me for heavier music. They were the first band with harsh vocals I ever REALLY listened to.
i second this:thumb: before opeth, i couldn't stand screaming vocals, but once i heard opeth i loved them for some reason and now i can tolerate more screaming music

Darkness 01-02-2006 08:01 PM

Yeah I wasn't really into growls before Opeth either.

Deth 01-02-2006 08:07 PM

Me either. Opeth was a gateway drug.

Whale and Wasp 01-02-2006 08:09 PM
I can't see someone that likes POP or Radio Rock jamming to Opeth, sorry.
Just because a person doesn't like Death Metal doesn't mean they like Pop or Radio Rock.

(Excuse my ignorance if we were talking about a specific person who dislikes Death Metal and likes those other two genres)
I can't see someone that likes POP or Radio Rock jamming to Opeth, sorry.
I love Dredg and Opeth. It is definitley possible.

Lev 01-02-2006 09:58 PM
Nope, unless it's on the official website.

*checks*

Says nothing about it, to my knowledge. Everyday makes me feel less and less like I'm gonna get to this concert. I don't know anything about it, besides where and when it is, and the tickets are on sale soon! Hell I don't even know HOW to buy tickets!

Oh, my fave albums in order;

Deliverance (atmosphere + heaviness = the awesomeness)
Ghost Reveries (so pretty)
Still Life (takes so long to get into it, but yeah I love it now)
Blackwater Park (puts me in a weird mood, and isn't that heavy, so I don't listen to it much)
Damnation (awesome but it just isn't Opeth)

YEAH. They're all great though.
I'm pretty sure tickets will be sold by ticketek, just ring the appropriate numbers that are on The Forum's website.

But where did you discover they are on sale by mid january??

Werny 01-02-2006 11:11 PM
I'm pretty sure tickets will be sold by ticketek, just ring the appropriate numbers that are on The Forum's website.

That's what I thought, but I have no idea how to buy them. I can ask around.

If I have to buy my ticket over the internet, I'm probably screwed. Mum doesn't trust the internet with her credit card.

There was a News thing on the official site saying that Opeth are touring Australia and tickets for the tour go on sale mid January.

I searched for Opeth on Ticketek, found nothing.

Lev 01-02-2006 11:22 PM

I'm pretty paranoid about buying things off the net aswell but you should be safe since it's from a big reputable company like ticketek, try convince your mum with thatt one if need be ;).

If it's off the net i have a friend who can buy it for me, but even still I would prefer to give some cash then recieve a ticket in my hand, I presume that ticketek would have a place somewhere that you can walk into and by tickets so I'll most likley be doing that.

Simon__Thats_All 01-03-2006 04:40 AM

I finally got Lamentations. It's just finishing now. It's amazing. The sound quality is incredible. I've always known they were awesome, but watching it like this just blows me away. I hope I can see them when they tour Aus.

Shadius 01-03-2006 04:50 AM
Don't steer people the wrong way. If a person doesn't like death metal, don't even bother with Opeth. Period.
Er... They have a whole album that has nothing to do with death metal, and they have various songs scattered across their other albums which also have nothing, or very little to do with death metal, why can't people enjoy those songs if they can't stand the growling vocals or dissonant guitars?
Because I'm being an elitist.
Oh, okay.

In other news, my top 5 Opeth songs are... too hard to say. How about top song from each album, that might be easier to work out... uh:

Orchid - In the Mist she was standing
Morningrise - To Bid You Farewell
My Arms, Your Hearse - When
Still Life - Maybe... White Cluster ATM, they're all about even though.
Blackwater Park - The Drapery Falls/Bleak
Deliverance - A Fair Judgement
Damnation - Windowpane
Ghost Reveries - Ghost of Perdition

Not that any of this matters, it could totally change and on most albums I love many songs equally.

matt4 01-03-2006 04:55 AM

Some ppl tried to start a list of top five favorite Opeth songs a page or so ago. Since that's impossible, even in our list-happy thread it didn't catch on this time :) I figured that it'd be more fun to list your favorite song from each album and then rank those. I realized even more how great Opeth is when I couldn't pick a favorite song off of a few albums :P Still, for the sake of the list, let's try:

Orchid - "The Twilight Is My Robe"
Morningrise - "To Bid You Farewell"
My Arms, Your Hearse - "Demon of the Fall"
Still Life - "Godhead's Lament"
Blackwater Park - "The Drapery Falls"
Deliverance - "Deliverance"
Damnation - "Closure"
Ghost Reveries - "The Grand Conjuration"

And now, the impossible task of putting those in an order...
1. "Godhead's Lament"
2. "Deliverance"
3. "The Drapery Falls"
4. "Demon of the Fall"
5. "The Twilight Is My Robe"
6. "Closure"
7. "To Bid You Farewell"
8. "The Grand Conjuration"

*Note: the above list is useless for me. maybe someone else will have better luck when they try :P

deathscreamingsheep 01-03-2006 06:22 AM

I've just started getting into Opeth. I assume it's probably a natural progression from my recent taste for increasingly proggier bands. I have to say that I'm not really a Death Metal fan. Currently I can stomach screams from hardcore bands, but I haven't really got into growls yet.

Anyway, I've heard Grand Conjuration and Ghosts of Perdition so I was considering getting the Ghosts Reveries album. However, looking at all your album lists it appears you rank that album pretty low. Is it still worth getting anyway?

Deth 01-03-2006 06:48 AM

I would say yes. Their whole discography is amazing, and for me, the last album on my list still gets a 9 out of 10.

Stoo 01-03-2006 08:15 AM

It's been a few weeks since the last one so I guess it's bloody important to have another "fav Opeth..." list. :p

I'll do the fav from each album one...

Orchid - Under the Weeping Moon.
Morningrise - BRI.
MAYH - When.
Still Life - Serenity Painted Death.
Blackwater Park - Bleak. (Fav Opeth song)
Deliverance* - Master's Apprentice.
Damnation* - Windowpane.
Ghost Reveries - The Grand Conjuration.

* I don't own these albums, but these songs are my favourite from what I've heard.

:)

Edit;

Seen as how Mx has been shut down, does anyone know where to get alot of Opeth tabs? Everywhere I look they have like 2 Opeth songs.

Any tab sites that are anywhere near as good as Mx?? Cheers. :thumb:

I beg to differ. I hate death metal (except for Opeth and old school In Flames) but love those bands.

Also, I listen to lots of stuff that could be considered pop and radio rock (like the Beatles, classic rock, Porcupine Tree/Blackfield) and I jam to Opeth.

So there's no need to make unneccessary generalizations. :thumb:

Top song from each album is better.

Orchid: In Mist She Was Standing...love that intro
Morningrise: To Bid You Farewell
MAYH: April Ethereal (Demon starts strong but gets weak toward the end IMO)
Still Life: My personal pick is Melinda, but The Moor takes it for all around best song.
Blackwater Park: Blackwater Park
Deliverance: A Fair Judgment
Damnation: Windowpane
GR: Ghost of Perdition

You should start with a different album first, I think. Although Ghost Reveries is still a great album, it's a step down (I think) from their previous releases.

Judging from the songs you like, I'd say start with Blackwater Park (my personal favorite) or Deliverance. Others may think differently, but those would be mine.

Still Life. Morningrise is also a personal favorite of mine, but it's not as accessible as SL or BWP.

deathscreamingsheep 01-03-2006 12:34 PM

Ok thanks a lot. I have a bit of spare cash so I think I'll pick up Blackwater Park and/or Still Life but I'll probably end up getting Ghost Reveries as well anyway.

There's about 50 on there.

I still don't know what's so good about Still Life. Then again, I haven't listened to it much...

Another decent tab site is www.911tabs.com, simply because it's like the google of tab sites. Gives you links to all the sites that have tabs for that song.

Unfortunately, some links bring you to shut down sites.

Shlakalam3 01-03-2006 01:31 PM

Yeah im another one who was brought into harsh vocals through Opeth...

Ghost Reveries is possibly their most accessable sounding progressive album. It has three songs which have no death vocals or heavily distorted guitars, and another track with few death vocals though the guitars are heavier, the rest are a mix of the two. I'd recommend it to a prog fan, definately.

It took me several repeated listens of the songs The Funeral Portrait and Blackwater Park to start to like the death growls. Now I absolutely love them.

Ghost Reveries is a masterpiece, buy it without any hesitation. While it's not the traditional starting point for an Opeth fan, seeing as how it's a slightly more accessible standing point, there's no reason why you should begin with it. A pure work of art, I say.
I still don't know what's so good about Still Life. Then again, I haven't listened to it much...

It's much in the same style as Blackwater Park, but better. BWP suffers from some rather weak sections (a little of TDF, some of Dirge, much of Funeral Portrait) whereas Still Life kicks hard the whole way through.

And it has The Moor.

Darkness 01-03-2006 04:18 PM

And Face Of Melinda.

Jude 01-03-2006 04:19 PM
And Face Of Melinda.
That too.

And Serenity Painted Death and Godhead's Lament.

Pfft...

:p

Toaster 01-03-2006 04:22 PM

I don't like Face Of Melinda as much as everyone here seems to.. the distorted parts are awesome, but a lot of the accoustic parts don't grab me like most Opeth does. It's nice, but not a favorite.
