Stoner metal can suck for sure. There has been a big surge of bands popping up in the last 5 or 6 years but stoner doom and sludge will always be one of my favorite genres. I see stoner metal either as encompassing stoner doom and sludge or as the newer weak mastodon/baroness stuff. But even the shittier stoner metal bands that hopped on the whole black sabbath trend recently are more fun to listen to than boring ass gothic doom/prog doom shit.

anyone here into Murkrat? i'm a fan of their first album and just got the promo of the new one. so far is decent but her vocals are pretty different, not so menacing anymore. might just be the track though

I agree, then. Dopethrone was the last evil sounding Wizard record. I still like everything they did after that (except Black Masses, which only has a couple of good numbers) but damn, will we ever hear the old school crush your mother monstrously heavy Wizard again?

Ufomammut at least tend to do a good job of capturing that early Electric Wizard sound and somewhat making it their own. Heavy shit.

I think EW has gotten weaker and just gone the kind of easy route with the whole retro doom. There is no topping Fanatics and Dopethrone but Ufomammut has surpassed them far as I'm concerned with the quality/quantity of releases. UFO is pushing boundaries. EW are still awesome though.

Queens of The Stone Age aren't that heavy, but are considered to be Stoner rock/metal.

This is true, EW has gotten weaker and as a result I have disliked more EW albums than UFO albums. I guess I still resort back to the behemoths of Fanatics and Dopethrone when I think of the quality of their albums. With respect to later albums from both, Eve is definitely better than BM. As much as I enjoy Snailking and Eve, if I had to pick only one to listen to I guess I would pick EW still (primarily playing Fanatatics and Dopethrone though).

Yeah I'm kinda the same way. I love Idolum a lot too.

Yeah, and it's a grower, I think. At least for me, it seems to get better with repeated listens. Restless is my favourite track.

Doesn't seem to be anywhere near as devastating as Warning, though. Regardless, this makes my top 10 so far this year. I really don't like the last track, though - even prefer to skip it, tbh.
