gahhhh ... i have to read a 300 page book and write an 8-page paper by monday. and then another 6 page report by tuesday :(
|
Better get the **** off MX then eh?
I've done things like that before. Except I didn't read the book. |
Sounds like you're screwed.
|
so.. band's album art. where should we be looking?
|

get a piece of paper and a pencil and start. |
yeah, i'd like something that didn't look like i drew it.
this is something that's going to be available worldwide, not something we're recording at home and selling for £5 on burnt CD-Rs and getting worked up about our 'debut album'. I want something that actually looks good. So I'm looking at actually getting someone talented to do it. |
thats a pretty poopty attitude about art right there.
and as if wordwide means anything anymore, ever heard of the internet? but yeah, If you think its a good idea to have another artist interpret your music and make a design and face for you, ya know thats cool. |
some people actually like to go to music shops and buy CDs physically..?
the worldwide thing isn't the main thing here, it's just there to emphasise this is kind of a big thing for us, and i don't want some amateurish looking product out there. all we need to do is find someone who does art that we like so that we can commission them. what's so wrong with that? pretty much all the really good looking album covers ever didn't get drawn by the band, i'm sure... |
nothings wrong with it. I always enjoyed ovbious self made album artwork though, it adds to the authenticity and honesty of the album imo. If you really spend time on making something in your own style, not a style you would like, it will probably turn out good. just sayin, making music is just like making a picture, takes time and practice.
|
i don't mind if it looks slickly produced, or homemade, as long as it looks well done. look for Antidotes by Foals and Say Hello To Sunshine by Finch for two visually contrasting albums i really like the look of.
the in-house art team for our label though, i just don't like. so i'd rather find someone we do like. maybe some uni students with some talent who are on the same wavelength. hm... |
I gotta agree with gattsu on this one. An album isn't just the music, it goes hand in hand with album art work, pullouts, lyric books etc. Just seems like half-arsing it really to get someone else to do it for you.
|
it all depends really on the style of the music. doesnt make much sense to stick an impressionist work of visual art onto a clear cut and concise piece of music ya know.
my band is somewhat straight forward so i just did the artwork for the letter and made them pretty abstracted, so to make up for it, i threw a real world object into the back ground and made the whole thing into a real qorld object. all the band members like it so thats good enough for me. |

lol, no. again, i bet 99% of released albums don't have art by the band themselves. |
lol, no.
again, i bet 99% of released albums don't have art by the band themselves.
You're probably more than right, honestly. I just think it's not how things should be. It's like buying a hallmark card for a lover with a pre-written love poem inside. |
Just draw up your own idea and then get an artist/designer to redo it at an enhanced quality.
|
Thats a good idea^^
I would liken it more to showing a picture of your girlfriend to some poet and then telling him to write a poem for her. It might be well made as far as the construction of the poem, but it isnt going to be completely honest or accurate. and if you didnt tell her, you could probably get away with it. |
Pretty much. **** knows I didn't design my bands EP cover or CD design, because I'm not a ****ing graphic designer. But we do know one and knew what we wanted.
|
Ah, so maximising poon and minimising effort? I like your style.
|
Fortunately for the world I'm as awesome as I am.

Damn Shakira is a sexy creature.

Linkz0r! I'm down with that. |
Album art - if you can do it well, do it yourself. If you can't, consider getting help depending on how high profile the release it.
Be prepared that if you hire a professional designer you will have to set aside at least a couple of hundred extra dollars for the CD budget. Touring Australia is financial suicide for overseas bands but it's supposed to be a great deal of fun. |
Has anybody ever had trouble with their wireless systems clipping?
When I use my Schecter through a cable, it sounds just fine. When I use it on my wireless, it sounds like it's farting out and the receiver says it's clipping. I've had to keep the bass' volume around 10% or lower to keep it from clipping. Aside from a single volume knob on the receiver (which is an output volume and does not affect the clipping problem), there are no other controls other than on/off/mute. |
Sounds like the output of your bass is too hot for the Send unit of the wireless.
Is there an attenuator on the Send unit? I've never used a wireless set-up so I don't really know how they travel. |

There is no adjustment on the transmitter ("Send unit") at all other than on/off/mute, and only the output volume on the receiver. I'll have to check out my roommate's wireless and see if it does the same thing. My wireless could just be too old and poopty to handle it. |
That's a right kick in the pants if it can't be fixed.

I agree. I'm actually installing a trimpot in my Schecter right before the output jack so that I can regulate the volumes between my basses without having to rely on my volume knob. Those EMG DCs are HOT. |
Interesting touch, haven't heard of that one before, basically a Line Out control for your bass huh?
|
hell yea i just scored a 85 MIJ squier jazz off ebay, the seller is like 2 hour drive away so hopefully i get it like tuesday or so :D
