CD prices are just higher in the UK, plus the dollar is weak making it seem even more expensive.

I heard Opeth about 3 years ago and when I heard them I did not like them at all. I was very wrong. About 2 months ago I decided to give them a chance and when I did I realized I was very wrong about them and was mad that I wasted all this time not liking them. Opeth is an amazing band and they are truly talented musicians/artists. The style is so unique and I love every song. I heard Opeth about 3 years ago and when I heard them I did not like them at all. Opeth can not be described with words and sentences... listening to Forest Of October, Black Rose Immortal, Credence etc... I just can say I'm a fan now... a devoted one.

Next up on the Opeth list...

1. Buy/downloading Deliverance from iTunes.
2. Borrowing/burning My Arms, Your Hearse from a friend.
3. Asking for Damnation (as well as the Deftones' s/t album) for my birthday.

That should keep me busy for a while.

Killtacular 01-01-2006 01:44 AM

My local 'record store' only has about five copies of Ghost Reveries and one of Damnation. The Damnation is about 19 dollars too.

Also, I got the last copy of Lamentations for 14.99.

D*mn! All these places you guys go to buy Cd's are expensive! I go to Best Buy and get most of my Cd's for 14. Or I get it from Amazon. :thumb:

Werny 01-01-2006 05:24 AM
Yer I even rang the place up and they had no clue, this was about mid December, i'll probably give another ring February to see if they have things sorted out

Which date are you going to go on? I'm going to go the 24th since next day is anzac day and i won't have to wake up for school :)

p.s. turned 17 on 27th, yay!
Dude, you might want to ring them before February, tickets go on sale mid-January!

Yeah I reckon I'll go to the 24th too, now that you mentioned Anzac Day.

I have to wait til May to turn 17. This is a birthday present.

Yeah.

Never buy Opeth CDs in stores. All the ones I've seen are 18-19-20 dollars, and that's only BWP, D&D, and tons of GR, plus occasionally Morningrise. On the other hand, I got Still Life NEW on Amazon.com for 11 dollars, shipping included.

I just can't figure out why their CDs are so expensive. They aren't some super-well-known band, and usually lesser known bands go for cheap. For example, all Dredg albums are around 10 bucks in these same stores.

denboy 01-01-2006 07:25 AM

All their cd's except for GR was released on non-american labels.. so of course they will be more expensive for you americans because they're imported

Except GR is just as expensive if not more, so the only conclusion is that record stores **** you in the *** and you shouldn't buy from them.

epihasi 01-01-2006 08:14 AM

Why is STILL LIFE so cheap compared to the other CDs?
I bought it in France for 13 Euros ( about 16 USD), which is still not cheap, and then I saw ORCHID for 23 Euros (30 (!!) USD)
Also, in Australia a few days ago I found MAYH for 35 Dollars (also, almost 30 USD), and Morningrise for 30 Dollars ( around 24 USD)
So, why the hell is SL so friggin' cheap?

Shadius 01-01-2006 08:22 AM

Still Life is usually cheap because it's a digipak. If you didn't get the digipak, then I can't answer your question, though I think it's more widely distributed in that format now.

FYE in my town has almost all of their CD's in stock now, and they're all 11.99 - 14.99 USD. Orchid and Morningrise are 11.99. Don't go to Amazon for them, they want 30.00 a piece for Orchid and Morningrise.

Whale and Wasp 01-01-2006 10:32 AM

still life costs about 34 dollars on amazon.... i wonder why its so expensive

Well, if you want to get the originals without the crap bonus tracks added on, you can't get them anywhere but online, but for the newer releases it's still cheaper on Amazon. But the originals are like 30 bucks on there.

Best Buy rocks, except they don't have Lamentations.

I saw a copy of Blackwater Park at a used record store for $5.99 the other day.

BlindWriting 01-01-2006 02:19 PM

Just listened to Deliverance for the first time. Good album, Wreath and Deliverance are flawless. The others are good, but overall not as strong as their other work.

Everyone's been giving Deliverance so much hype. Is it really better than Blackwater Park and Still Life? I have a hard time imagining an album that great.

Txus 01-01-2006 02:23 PM

Still Life >> Deliverance >> BWP.

I think it's the worst Opeth album. A Fair Judgement is an amazing song though.

Thor 01-01-2006 02:25 PM

There are way too many different opinions on Opeth's albums that I guess I'll just have to get all of them and make my opinions on them myself.

Out of the 5 albums I have, here is how they rank.
1. Blackwater Park
2. Still Life
3. My Arms, Your Hearse
4. Morningrise
5. Ghost Reveries

I own all the Opeth albums and I rank the following:
1. Still Life
2. Damnation
3. Deliverance
4. Blackwater Park
5. Ghost Reveries
6. My Arms, Your Hearse
7. Morningrise
8. Orchid

That was a tough choice.

MidnightRider 01-01-2006 02:40 PM

I wonder how many times the favorite album list has been done in this thread.

1. Still Life
2. BWP
3. Morningrise
4. Damnation
5. GR

That's all I have. BWP and Morningrise are really a tie.

In a lot of ways, they're all really close. I just think that the top two showcase their switching between beautiful and heavy the best and have the best songwriting. Damnation has excellent songwriting, but only shows a more limited version of their sound and the other albums, I feel, are slightly more flawed. This order could change, and there isn't much in it between albums really. I find the the older albums have better or more beautiful riffs in general, though the songwriting I don't feel is always as good or consistant. I have numerous favourite Opeth songs spread across the top 6 albums; quite impressive for a death metal band.

JamJar 01-01-2006 04:31 PM

From the albums I have:

Still Life ~ This overall shows their best songwriting and I think that Mikaels vocasl sre amazing here. All the songs are great and I find it's impossible to pick a faveourite. I love the guitar work here, it seems to be their most technical to date.

Blackwater Park ~ Simular sound to Still Life but a lot darker, I think The Funeral Portrait is a bit weak where as I like all the songs on Still Life the same.

Ghost Reveries ~ A very diverse album overall showing all areas of Opeth. The clean sections on great and the heavy sections are some of the most brutal they have recorded yet it just doesn't seem to be as good as BWP or Still life. It's probably to do with the riffs. They just don't seem to have the same evil crunch.

My Arms, Your Hearse ~ I really like the concept here. It has awsome guitar work but is lacking a bit in the bass but this can't be helped as they didn't have a bass player at the time. It has one of their best songs, Demon Of The Fall but all the tracks seem to have a simular feel, including Creedence. It has a very depressing feel.

Deliverence ~ The first time I heard Wreath, I really didn't like it and it probably remains as my least favourite Opeth song. The next songs are really good but I find Mikael's clean vocals to be very bland. Master's Apprentices is probably the highlight for me, with the heavy dark riffs. Very good album but not Opeth's best.

Morningrise ~ This album is good but it lacks in the songwriting. It just seems to drag on. Johan is a great bass player and there are original bass parts but at times they seem far too hectic for the atmosphere or pace of the song. Mikaels clean vocals are also lacking. To Bid You Farewell is easily my favourite on here.

I look forward to getting Damnation and Orchid.
