That is extremely true, Daniel Gildenlöw is easily one of my top 5 vocalists.

Txus 03-16-2006 09:23 PM

Well my TOP 5 favorite bands besides Opeth are:

Tool
Behemoth
Death
Agalloch
Haggard

Shadows 03-16-2006 09:49 PM

I'm surprised by how many non-metal lovers there are here.

Darkness 03-16-2006 09:51 PM

Well, Opeth does have a lot of non-metal stuff. :p

Cardboard Headgear 03-16-2006 10:25 PM

I'm not sure what we're talking about right now cause I'm too lazy to go back a page, but I thought I'd just interject to say that Katatonia is amazing.

Kaiwaz 03-16-2006 10:50 PM

Didn't Åkerfeldt do the vocals to Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay?

Cardboard Headgear 03-16-2006 10:53 PM

Yes the growls, but I prefer their albums after those more.

Kaiwaz 03-16-2006 10:54 PM

Have you heard anything from The Great Cold Distance ?

Shadows 03-16-2006 10:55 PM

The Great Cold Distance isn't nearly as good as Viva Emptiness.

Cardboard Headgear 03-16-2006 10:57 PM

Yeah, I've got the promo copy by less than legal means, but I plan to buy it anyways. Not to mention every song has got "You are listening to the song _____ from the forthcoming Katatonia album blablabalbah" interspersed throughout. Anyways, the album itself is fantastic, Anders's voice just keeps getting more mature, though it has it's own great charm on the older stuff when he didn't have as much control over it.
The Great Cold Distance isn't nearly as good as Viva Emptiness.
Well, right now I'd agree, BUT the album hasn't had much of a chance to grow on me, and all of Katatonia's albums are growers for sure. There'll be a few songs that stick to you right away on each album, but then the more you listen the more they all start to rule.

Kaiwaz 03-16-2006 11:02 PM

I haven't heard anything from the latest album yet, but if it's decent, I will buy it. btw, is that Chuck in your avatar?

Moses 03-17-2006 12:21 AM
I have NO idea why POS is so good. My friend keeps getting mad at me for saying they're rather bad...I personally don't like them much, from what I've heard.
Remedy Lane is the most accessible, if you want somthing truly mindbending listen to Be. They really really grow on you. It's like they carry the true essence of prog better than any band I can think of.

Det_Nosnip 03-17-2006 02:21 AM
I've been meaning to ask...

What's everyone here's favourite bands besides Opeth? Just so we can see everyones backgrounds and what other type of music people like. Got me thinking after that round of everyone liking/hating different Opeth songs.

Shall we say five bands that you really like, either at the moment, or just generally. Mine would probably be;

Tool/APC
The Mars Volta
In Flames
Muse
Radiohead

Bands like Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden would be up there too. I'm also really enjoying At the Drive-In's Relationship of Command album at the moment too, even though I can't really stand their older stuff.
Hmm....in the rock/metal category?

the Gathering (can you tell?)
Nevermore
Tool
After Forever
Dark Tranquillity

I'm about equally into jazz as I am into metal, and I'm also really into alot of world music, mostly Middle Eastern, Celtic and latin. And, of course, you've gotta love the classics - Liszt, Orff, Rachmaninov, Tchaichovsky, Mozart, etc. I'm pretty much always discovering something new. :)

Det_Nosnip 03-17-2006 02:23 AM
Haggard
:chug: Those guys are awesome...don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve. Eppur Si Muove = :amaze: .

Jude 03-17-2006 10:12 AM

What I've been listening to...past couple days I've been going back to the classics a lot. My top 5 would probably be

Porcupine Tree
Pink Floyd
Hendrix
Cream
Deep Purple

Porcupine Tree
Tool/APC
Dream Theater
Radiohead

UpperDecker 03-17-2006 11:03 AM

Cryptopsy
Slayer
Korn
Nile
Between The Buried and Me

Whale and Wasp 03-17-2006 05:37 PM

top 5 other than opeth...

camel
pink floyd
pantera
ozzy
joe satriani

Stoo 03-17-2006 05:38 PM

It appears the Opeth thread's topics of conversation have nothing to do with Opeth...

Shadows 03-17-2006 05:42 PM

Someone asked for people's top 5 favorite bands besides Opeth to get an idea of everyone's taste. It's the first time I've seen this thread go off topic.

gmoneyguy 03-17-2006 06:03 PM

So how long is Lopez going to be out?

Tyr 03-17-2006 06:06 PM
:chug: Those guys are awesome...don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve. Eppur Si Muove = :amaze: .
Ah, Haggard. They are great. Very singular, indeed.

[Shadowfox] 03-17-2006 06:25 PM

/thread n00b

Big Opeth fan. They've been a huge influence on my musical perception. And from browsing the past few pages, I'll go ahead and post my top five outside if Opeth.

Mastodon
Metallica
All Shall Perish
Hendrix
Emperor

Five isn't enough...

Deth 03-17-2006 07:37 PM

Hey there, stick around will you :).
So how long is Lopez going to be out?
No word on it, but it's already been a while so I would assume it would be a while longer.

TojesDolan 03-17-2006 07:43 PM

OMG lists!

I don't think I'm that fond of other bands... Opeth is MY life. :(

Nonetheless:

Death
King Crimson
Dream Theater (And all it's variables)
Iron Maiden
And I don't know... Probably In flames. Those are the ones in the top of my mind at the moment.

I started watching the DVD again. I love it so bad.

gmoneyguy 03-17-2006 07:49 PM

Hopefully the replacement can do Lopez justice.

Deth 03-17-2006 07:54 PM

He does live, but I'm sure Lopez will still be able to do studio stuff.

gmoneyguy 03-17-2006 08:06 PM
He does live, but I'm sure Lopez will still be able to do studio stuff.
Ya I meant for their show, I'm sure the disease isn't serious enough that Lopez would have to quit that band.

Deth 03-17-2006 08:16 PM

Axenrot just looks out of place if only because he has blonde hair. It clashes with the rest of the band :p.

Darkness 03-17-2006 08:17 PM
Axenrot just looks out of place if only because he has blonde hair. It clashes with the rest of the band :p.
Heh yeah...

I wonder what a studio album with him playing would sound like... don't say "O IT WUD SUCK CUZ MARTIN ROX", I'm actually wandering what good death metal beats would sound like in the harsher sound of Opeth...

Deth 03-17-2006 08:20 PM

I don't want to hear blast beats, I know that. I think it would be similar to the style on the first 2 albums.

Darkness 03-17-2006 08:22 PM

I like blast beats... :p

Deth 03-17-2006 08:23 PM

Me too, but not in Opeth.

Darkness 03-17-2006 08:24 PM

Why not take there extreme part farther? Theres always room for more progression in Opeth.

gmoneyguy 03-17-2006 08:25 PM
Axenrot just looks out of place if only because he has blonde hair. It clashes with the rest of the band :p.
He's a tr00 swede.
Why not take there extreme part farther? Theres always room for more progression in Opeth.
But it's so cliche at this point. It wouldn't progress the music in any way imo.

Darkness 03-17-2006 08:27 PM
But it's so cliche at this point. It wouldn't progress the music in any way imo.
Opeth never put any limits on themselves in the past...

Shadows 03-17-2006 08:28 PM
But it's so cliche at this point. It wouldn't progress the music in any way imo.
How is it cliche?

Jude 03-17-2006 08:28 PM
But it's so cliche at this point. It wouldn't progress the music in any way imo.
Not to mention I would take Martin Lopez's incredible finesse and subtle style over any in-your-face, play-as-fast-and-loud-as-I-can metal drummer any day. He is to drums what Mikael Akerfeldt is to songwriting in metal.
