If that was true they wouldn't spend all of their time telling everyone about it. Bands that actually believe in what they preach don't spend all of their career bitching about it and attracting attention for everyone. They claim to be complete naturalists, and yet they don't address the fact that they travel in cars, have a Myspace that promotes their music to a national audience, have barcodes on their cds, and have frequent use to a computer.

Using music as a vehicle to promote your ideologies and thoughts is fine, but it's ALL they talk about. They're more of a novelty / gimmick than a black metal band.

Its something they obviously care about, so they are going to sing about it. I don't see how this is a big deal?

I don't think they've ever said they were complete naturalists, or aspire to be that. In fact in another interview they admit they aren't full blown naturalists.

It's like... if I wanted to make some money with my fictional band, I'd pick an outlandish, extreme gimmick to center my music around. And if a band has strange and unaccepted view or portrayal on things more people are attracted to them obviously.

It's not like WITTR are alone with this; the LLN is guilty of it (but at least some good music came out of that) and same with more mainstream acts, too. Music is all a gimmick. Someone pointed that out to me a few months ago, and I actually believe it now.

I do not doubt there are bands out there that intentionally pick gimmicks to make money off of. BUT, I do think there are bands that are genuine about what they believe in, and their records have a certain theme to them that persists in their albums and personal ideology throughout.

That's why I am always extremely skeptical towards claims that some BM artists are profit-motivated

1338 h4x0r, claims that Dark Funeral, Marduk, Nachtmystium and Krieg hunting for profit are more than rational. Dark Funeral and Marduk are making mindless, repetitive and boring music, show no real like for black metal, dress up typically black metal and sing about typically black metal subjects with typical black metal imagery and song titles and stage names. They also came about around the time that the Norwegian Black Metal scene was making Scandinavian headlines. Nachtmystium do interviews for magazines that appear in every newsagent in the world and the guy from Krieg admitted that he only played black metal because his friends like it and there was a big local scene.
