Kirk's Puppet 07-01-2006 02:15 AM

Take the Time demo is pretty similar, but I prefer it to the original.

Here's the file... let's see if I'm beaten again... http://rapidshare.de/files/24621360/Dream_Theater_-_When_Demos_And_Singles_Unite_-_02_-_Take_the_Time.mp3.html
So how many of you dream theatre fans/groupies actually play music yourself, and to what standard?
Well, I'm a guitarist. I have a couple of songs recorded up on www.soundclick.com/melodicdiversion . Not amazing ones, but I like some of them.

i've been classicaly trained since 4 on the violin and piano. don't underestimate me or anyone else in here.
regarding guitar, i've only been at it for 2 years but i've learned so much on my own and really fast at that too. still got miles to go, and hoping to get some jazz chops into my fingers, but one thing at a time eh?

don't automatically assume that people who listen to dream theater have little or no musical sense or ability. i know that im making an assumption myself by assuming you thought that way...but the way your question was loaded and directed indicated so.

:chug: cheers

Cool cool that's fine. But sometimes I get the impression that alot of the people that worship band's such as Dream Theater lack an understanding and appreciation for music as an art form, and end up becoming loser musicians who will never have a hit single or play a gig infront of more than a thousand people or so.

The Wizard of Oz 07-01-2006 04:40 AM

I know I'm sounding like an arse here, but I see far too many people focus on making their music complicated just for the sake of being able to show off their proficiency at their instrument.

Hey guys, what do you think of the extras on the "SCORE" DVD?
Taken from mikeportnoy.com, the extras on the DVD are:
- Tour documentary
- Octavarium Cartoon
- Another Day (Tokyo 1993)
- The Great Debate (Bucharest 2002)
- Honor Thy Father (Chicago 2005)

Confirmed by Mike Portnoy himself!!

I think they're great, especially The Great Debate, I've always wanted to see that song live. Can't wait for this DVD! :D

GenuineImitation 07-01-2006 08:56 AM

The extras are all great. I cant wait to watch the Octavarium cartoon again because I missed most of it during the show.

I've never seen it. They didn't play Octavarium when I saw them live. :upset:

But they did play Dark Side Of The Moon which more than made up for it. :D

I've been playing piano since five. What are some of the songs you've played?

Right now I'm learning Ballade in G minor by Chopin.

inassociationwithdeanlearner 07-01-2006 10:29 AM

What is the octavarium cartoon??
So how many of you dream theatre fans/groupies actually play music yourself, and to what standard?
I do. I've been playing bass for just over 2 years, I like to think I'm pretty good.

I own John Myung's Yamaha sig.

I'm not a fan boy. I swear.

I'm pretty sure it's the video played on the screen during the song. It's supposed to be funny, I have never seen it yet though.

inassociationwithdeanlearner 07-01-2006 10:57 AM

Nice, i might have to try and find it somewhere.

ghettoeddo 07-01-2006 02:19 PM

it's great. it starts in the "full circle" part when they have the weird lyrics with pictures of owen wilson on the screen etc.

yea i know what you mean...but i would be content myself w/ just never playing in a gig or in front of thousands of people. i play the guitar because i really do love too. playing a large gig (or even a small one) would be awesome, but it's not necessary. for me anyway.

umm...started off w/ suzuki stuff up till book 6. some basic concertos by accolay, bach...and then the usual violin concerto repertoires.

i remember...mendelssohn, lalo symphonie espagnole, sibelius concerto (this is an amazing piece of work...), and the tchaikovsky violin concerto in D major.

tchaik violin concerto for the WIN!!! \m/ oh and i also learned sarasate's zigeunerweisen

never played much chopin when i took piano :\ i regret it...

I don't play an instrument, I'm a vocalist... the musical virtuosity of the band isn't what I focus on, my main love of the band stems from James' voice, and the emotion he has in that, I don't know much, if anyhting about music, so the band's technical ability is not really something I think about.
When about did they play the cartoon?

When they were playing Octavarium.

It was during the instrumental part starting at around 15:40 or so in the studio song.

I've seen the cartoon on youtube, you might be able to find it from one of the live shows.:thumb:
