Weakness isn't as bad as Closure, I just find the keyboard part during the intro very frightening.

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one. :) |
Weakness is a very creepy song. I think it's the perfect song for how they use it. On Damnation it comes after Ending Credits and is a very somber end to the album. On Lamentations it make a great contrast between the mellow set and the heavy set.

a big 123 on that, good sir. |
Something about Weakness reminds me of Super Metroid, I think on one level the music was very similar...

Now that you mention it, they do seem to fit together. |
Ghost Reveries is great. I'm listening to it now.

It was that one underwater level...where you had to grapple a lot. That's it, I'm breaking out my SNES... |

It's a pretty solid album. I was obsessed with it when I first got it, but I don't listen to it nearly as much as I used to. Still, it's very enjoyable for a listen every once in a while. The Grand Conjuration.....yes! |

Dude, can I spend the night at your house? I haven't played that game in so long! :( I can bring a sleeping bag and pillow...we'll stay up past midnight talking about girls and ninja turtles...drinking Tang the entire night. Yes! I am so coming over! |

Yeah, it's decent. It's actually starting to grow on me. I never used to like the album at all, (With the exception of Ghost Of Perdition). I guess it just needed to settle in, like most of Opeth's music, it grew on me like vines. Maybe next year I'll have more memories attached to the album and like it even better. Only time will tell. Atonement and The Grand Conjuration are the only songs on the album I really don't care for.
Dude, can I spend the night at your house? I don't understand why everybody doesn't like The Grand Conjuration much...
|
Mortal Kombat FTW for SNES. I don't have it anymore though :(
I'll listen to Grand Conjuration afterwards, but I remember not liking it either :-/ |
I don't understand why everybody doesn't like The Grand Conjuration much...
The song is too repetative. I don't like the way it opens or ends. The keyboards, IMO, sound out of tune to the song at times. I don't like the lyrics, drums, all guitars and it's too long for what it is. |

Sounds good to me. We'll get drunk, play video games, look for women, and pass out on the floor of your place. |
I love that riff though...the really evil sounding one. Again, another mad fun riff to play.

I want in! Shattered, how can you like and defend The Grand Conjuration, but not like Face Of Melinda? :p |
I've been meaning to ask...
What's everyone here's favourite bands besides Opeth? Just so we can see everyones backgrounds and what other type of music people like. Got me thinking after that round of everyone liking/hating different Opeth songs. Shall we say five bands that you really like, either at the moment, or just generally. Mine would probably be; Tool/APC The Mars Volta In Flames Muse Radiohead Bands like Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden would be up there too. I'm also really enjoying At the Drive-In's Relationship of Command album at the moment too, even though I can't really stand their older stuff. |
Tool
Nevermore In Flames Emperor And I've been listening to Blind Guardian a lot. I also really like Death and Iced Earth right now. |
Children of Bodom
Shadows Fall Arsis Cradle of Filth I'm binging on Opeth though. |
Mine would be Weezer, Radiohead, Godspeed you! Black Emperor, Muse, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr, and Elliott Smith.
Those are just what I'm currently digging, don't like making all-time favorite lists. Opeth is really the only metal band I listen to. |
Megadeth
Metallica Kreator Dream Theater Incubus I dunno, wide variety of different music (Although at the same time, a lot of it is the same)... |
I want in!
Shattered, how can you like and defend The Grand Conjuration, but not like Face Of Melinda? :p
No idea. I'm a weird guy. Nightwish Dark Tranquillity Blind Guardian Symphony X Sonata Arctica/Arch Enemy (they're about even) PM and MDM for me...though I like tons of other stuff, these are some of my favorites. |
Age of Silence
Winds Beatles Porcupine tree Novembers Doom |
I forgot to mention the Pumpkins too, the Smashing ones.
Opeth, In Flames and Iron Maiden are the only metal bands I would consider myself big fans of, in that order. Other ones I usually only listen to maybe a song or two of. I reckon it's the more progrssive elements of Opeth's music, along with Mikael's clean vocals that really attracted me to them, plus their general heaviness. I mean, they probably are the heaviest band I listen to. I seem to have a weird thing for good prog bands and 90's/00's art-rock type bands. |

Who's Tool?
|
Porcupine Tree
Iron Maiden Judas Priest Blind Guardian Death Dream Theater Manowar Pelican Those are up there in the ranks. |

How quickly you Hispanics forget the excellence of the prog rock masterpeice that is Tool. :D |
Queensr˙che
Tool Symphony X Bad Religion Gamma Ray And quite a lot more, but these five have been in the top for a long time. |

XD actually I havn't listened to them in a while... waiting for new album, I've pretty much played out the other cds. |
What do you guys think of Pain of Salvation? You all seem to have good/decent tastes in music.
I've been wondering if I should check them out, anyway, which album would you guys say first, I've heard 'Be' and 'Remedy Lane' are their best? |
Pain of Salvation is also one of my favourite bands. I would recommend 'Remedy Lane', as that is a little more accessible, I think. 'Be' is VERY progressive, but still very good.
|
I have NO idea why POS is so good. My friend keeps getting mad at me for saying they're rather bad...I personally don't like them much, from what I've heard.
|
Iced Earth
Blind Guardian Nevermore Death Atheist Edguy Thats it for now. The first 2 never change though. NP Death - The Philosopher |
I need to get back into Opeth. I fear I may have outgrown them. Suggestions?
Since we're doing top 5s, I figured I might do it genrewise as in two similar bands I enjoy almost equally so people get a better idea of the music instead of looking at the anomaly. Holcombe Waller/Jeff Buckley Cafe Tacuba/Radiohead Riverside/Agalloch Woven Hand/Songs Ohia November's Doom/Lacrimas Profundere Oh, and the guy that wanted Pain of Salvation recommendations, Remedy Lane before Be though Be is a stronger album overall. |
Alright, thanks guys. I might just get them in that order then.
Unless anyone has any objections? |
Listening to Remedy Lane, I can see why people like it...it just doesn't appeal to me at all though. I like prog, just I don't understand why this is so good, aside from the vocalist. He's quite excellent.
