I bought Defenders and Ram it Down yesterday. Defenders is fantastic and may in time become one of my favorites. Ram it Down has some great songs, but the weak songs are really weak.
But Hard As Iron and Ram It Down make up for it all. |
Damn right.
I still need to get Defenders >_> |
After giving another listen to Ram it Down, I like it a lot more now than I initially did.
NP: Death - Leprosy |
I'm listening to the title track now
|
Damn right.

Yes, they really hit their stride for a while in the '80s and early '90s. Most albums from that era are must own.
|
The only thing that mildly grates at me is how polished the albums from Point of Entry to Ram it Down sound. Tom Allom took away some of the grime that made the early Priest sound better imo.
|
Point of Entry in my opinion was Priest's most boring album. That one really did nothing for me.
|
its not as bad as turbo
|
Nothing is as bad as Turbo. I think Point of Entry had some good points.
|
Rocka Rolla woman for a Rocka Rolla man.
Rocka Rolla is great. Especially the title track. Anyway, I gave Defenders a first listen in ages about a week ago. It's a great album, but Love Bites is so Motley Crue. Oh yeah, that Rocka Rolla reference came out of nowhere didn't it? oh well, not to worry. NP: Gamma Ray - Victim of Changes |
Well look who it is.
Nothing wrong with a bit of Motley here and there. |
I like Love Bites
But then again I like every track on Defenders and Painkiller :D NP: Dissident Aggressor STAND! BAWL! PUNCH! CRAWL! I know what I am, I'm Berlin! What's that supposed to mean anyway? |
its not as bad as turbo
Yeah, Turbo makes me cringe. I've always avoided Point of Entry and I hate British Steel with a passion. Defenders of the Faith, Screaming for Vengeance and Painkiller are what I like to call the big 3 purely because they are 3 of the best Metal albums around. It's times like these I question how good Maiden really are when compared to Priest. |
I like British Steel. Metal Gods, Rapid Fire, United, Grinder, Steeler and Breaking the Law are all great. I wouldn't put it in my top 3, but it's a fun listen.
|
Meh, I only like Breaking the Law, The Rage and Steeler the rest is really disposable.
|
! You think that about Metal Gods?! That's one of my favorite Priest songs.
|
I'm sorry but it's a horrible track.
|
:(
I love that song. |
Nothing wrong with Metal Gods, but it's not particularly special either.

However, when Priest do it right, they blow Maiden out of the water imo : D |
Very true. Maiden has released some amazing albums, but only Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is able to touch the best stuff Priest has put out.
My three definitive Priest albums are: Sad Wings of Destiny Stained Class Painkiller |

Like the shining highlights of Ram It Down.
I'd put Screaming For Vengeance above Painkiller in terms of best speed metal albums. |
I ... wouldn't
:p I don't see why why you would prefer Screaming for Vengeance. It has a lot of great songs, but Take These Chains, Pain and Pleasure, Fever and Devil's Child are pretty average. Screaming for Vengeance has Electric Eye, Bloodstone, You've Got Another Thing Comin' and the title track, but Painkiller has Leather Rebel and One Shot at Glory and eight other great songs besides. |
Yeah, but Painkiller can get really repetitive, I've noticed. Standout tracks like Leather Rebel and One Shot At Glory are great, but sometimes I tend to let the others blur together.
|

Metal Gods is easily the best track off British Steel.
I prefer Painkiller to Screaming For Vengeance. I think Painkiller is more consistent that SFV. I have never thought Pain And Pleasure and the last two tracks were as good as the rest of the album. |
I think Defenders is beating out SFV now for me. Much more consistant, even if it does lack Electric Eye.
|
I think Defenders of the Faith is one of their best albums too. Jawbreaker, The Sentinel, Freewheel Burning. Three outstanding tracks. But when I'm in a bad mood, nothing beats listening to Rocka Rolla. It's really some progressive stuff there. I just love Ian's freely bass playing on the whole album. Run of the Mill is definately the best track on it, and it beats all the other slower "ballads" they have ever released later. The nearly three minutes long (!) solo is just outstanding, and sounds like nothing they have ever made later! And when Mr. Halford starts the singing / screaming in the end, I nearly start to cry :p
But other than Run of the Mill, other albums have much better songs, even though many of the songs on Rocka Rolla is very addictive (One for the Road, the title track, Cheater). The second part of Dying to Meet You is great, too. I recommend this album if you want to hear a completely different and bluesy side of Priest. (Wow, that nearly became a review :p) |
Yeah, I really enjoy Rocka Rolla. So much so that I used to like it more than Sad Wings Of Destiny.

But Defenders has The Sentinel, which is my all-time favourite Priest song :D For pretty much every song on Screaming for Vengeance, I can think of at least one Defenders track that I like better. At least three if you don't count Electric Eye.
I think Defenders of the Faith is one of their best albums too. Jawbreaker, The Sentinel, Freewheel Burning. Three outstanding tracks. I remember reading that the producer made them cut Caviar and Meths down from a ~7 minute song to a ~2 minute instrumental. I'd have liked to hear the long version, I like the album version a lot already. It does have some good tracks though. I love Rocka Rolla and Run of the Mill. |
I've seen Rocka Rolla in a bookstore for cheap, so I may end up picking it up. I just really need that and Sin after Sin for me to be happy with my Priest collection.
I think I can live without Point of Entry, Turbo and the Ripper albums. |

And Gull Records (which owns the rights for the first two albums) won't give Priest any credits and keeps selling "Best of Priest" albums with songs from the two first albums... If you want to hear the full length version of Caviar and Meths, Al Atkins (the former singer in Priest, which wrote it), has released it on one of his albums, along with his original version of Victom of Changes and Never Satisfied. I think the album is named "Victim of Changes". |

The album is worth it just for the first two songs I mentioned. And if the bastards had released Heart of a Lion on Turbo it would've made that album worth purchasing too  |
Anyone heard Ripper Owens' new band? Great stuff... If you liked Jugulator, you'll love it
|
Welcome Jaffe, nice to see another Priest fan :)
|
Jugulator wasn't too bad. Nothing compared to the other Priest stuff though.
|
I have Defenders ordered at the library
|
Today I sat down and listened to Stained Class again (long time since last time I listened to it). It's really an amazing album! Actually, of all songs on the album, I seem to like Savage best, despite many people calling it a filler or one of the weakest on the album. Rob screams like hell on the intro!
|
I'm surprised Stained Class doesn't get the attention of Painkiller etc I really like it. Beyond the Realms of Death has my favourite guitar solo.
