the devil and god are raging inside me is pretty much just an indie album

The Feeding 09-22-2009 10:29 PM

how old are you silverfang? obviously young enough to worry about changing yourself for some dumb girl

you'll learn

Meatplow 09-23-2009 01:13 AM

is it bad I consider myself too cool for the term indie and arrange bands into the actual subgenres they allegedly belong to

Iluvatar 09-23-2009 01:24 AM

it makes almost no sense is what i consider it

Meatplow 09-23-2009 01:31 AM

like i've got no problem with the term as such but if a group plays shoegaze, psychedelic rock or post-punk revival stuff i'll lump them into a shoegaze, psychedelic rock or post-punk folder with other bands who seem to transcend indie to belong to those genres somehow even though back in the day they probably belonged to independent record labels so idk

Jaundice 09-23-2009 01:32 AM

90% of indie music can't be categorized as anything but generic indie

other 10% can be put into other categories

Meatplow 09-23-2009 01:34 AM

what characterises generic indie though

Jaundice 09-23-2009 01:35 AM

acoustic guitars , boring melodies, girls like it.

I don't remember specifically because I haven't listened to stuff like this in a while.

Nepenthe 09-23-2009 01:35 AM

the only things i leave labeled as indie is pinback and similar sounding ****. everything else gets further classified.

yes, i have pinback

folk pop?

Jaundice 09-23-2009 01:38 AM

there's a certain brand of it though that just screams indie rock in an indescribable way

Meatplow 09-23-2009 01:40 AM

indie rock seems to me to be just an umbrella terms for different shades of rock like noise rock or stoner rock

is it lo-fi production values that make it sound weedy which make it more indie I wonder

wtf are you talking about? I never said I was changing for her... that's Jaundice... I'm just starting to get into indie. I would never change myself for another person. Learn to read my posts correctly please.

illmitch 09-23-2009 10:47 PM

some of my fave indie:

the smiths - the smiths
of montreal - the sunlandic twins
belle and sebastian - if you're feeling sinister
the mountain goats - all hail west texas
ballboy - club anthems
bright eyes - lifted or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground

Six Foot Revolver 09-24-2009 04:17 AM

what indie bands have you got in to so far because it's a pretty far reaching label?

Si1v3RfaNg 09-24-2009 09:25 AM
what indie bands have you got in to so far because it's a pretty far reaching label?
Jaundice 09-24-2009 09:40 AM
wtf are you talking about? I never said I was changing for her... that's Jaundice... I'm just starting to get into indie. I would never change myself for another person. Learn to read my posts correctly please.
yeah that was me that said that
of montreal - the sunlandic twins
belle and sebastian - if you're feeling sinister
these are very good suggestions

basically kyle as a starting point get If You're Feeling Sinister and Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Those are probably two of the most well-respected indie albums and they've always been favorites. Be careful with Aeroplane though because it's pretty overwhelmingly emotional.

Six Foot Revolver 09-24-2009 09:48 AM

which brand new? if it's the newer stuff then maybe check out modest mouse.

Jaundice 09-24-2009 09:48 AM

lol, does brand new really sound like modest mouse now?

Six Foot Revolver 09-24-2009 09:50 AM

not at all but the heavier parts/screams means he might like modest mouse. idk

Si1v3RfaNg 09-24-2009 09:50 AM
which brand new? if it's the newer stuff then maybe check out modest mouse.
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me... but I like all of Brand New's stuff.

Jaundice 09-24-2009 09:51 AM
