Mutiilation for black.
Loudblast (Sublime Dimentia album), Carcariass, Dungortheb and Luen Ta for technical death. They're not the highest quality technical death you could get but they're french ;).
Alchemist (or Alchemyst?) is another french (prog I think) group I've heard of(just heard of)

Spoonman 03-13-2005 10:20 AM

Thx dudes! I posted that yesterday cause I am leaving for france today. The Metal scene is slowly but surely moving from Scandinavia to France and I wanted to check it out. Thx again! :)

the2stranger 03-13-2005 10:27 AM

does anyone have an album by "canvas solaris'?
if so, is it any good?
and if anyone is willing to share this over the internet, I would be thanful cause I can't find it anywhere

Bartender 03-13-2005 10:36 AM

I have their Spatial/Design EP, and their Sublimation album. You should be able to buy both in the store on http://www.lasercd.com :)

trev91388 03-13-2005 10:49 AM

All right, here's kind of a request for some love...I'm into just about everything, but every CD I own, I've listened to about 10 times over, and I own a lot of freaking CDs (probably getting close to 200 now). So anyway, I'm kind of wondering about some music to expand my horizons. I'd like someone to reccomend me a precedential (word?) album or two or more from these genres...

Classic Rock
Alt. Rock
Country
Blues
Jazz

Thank you in advance.

Bartender 03-13-2005 11:03 AM

Well I don't know which albums you already own, or what you necessarily mean by the genres you give, but;

Alt. Rock:
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Faith No More - King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime
Faith No More - Album of the Year
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy
Technically not alt. rock, but similar sound;
Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
Gang of Four - Solid Gold
Interpol - Antics

Blues:
Skip James - just investigate him generally. Most of his stuff recorded in the 30s, so sound quality can be pretty bad. Great music, though.
Muddy Waters
Actually, seriously consider the Blues Brothers (the film). Watch it, maybe buy the soundtrack, and investigate. Lots of excellent stuff there, of blues and related genres.

Jazz:
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (/cliche)
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (for fusion)
Yusef Lateef - The Blue Yusef Lateef (a bluesy jazz album)
If you like piano particularly, check out Chick Corea/Return to Forever, particularly the album Return to Forever.
Others will be able to recommend you more jazz than I, though.

You may well own these already, though.

Hmm.
I've been listening to alot of Death and Black Metal lately, and I thought it would be good to broaden my taste by listening to some more jazz. (I also want to study percussion in college, and you need to know jazz to get in) What would you people suggest? I'm open to most styles of jazz.
Also, what would be some bands similar to Vader? I have been enjoying them greatly, with the exception of the vocals.

Well, see my above post for some suggestions. I don't own many jazz albums, but I've not yet been disappointed by any of those I have bought. Well, I suppose I am potentially disappointed with Jaco Patorius' self titled, as I haven't give it a proper listen yet.

Behemoth, but that's a word of mouth recommendation. I haven't heard enough of either to recommend properly.

Just browse through, or else ask in, this thread. Most of the bands there will be at least superficially similar to Hammerfall.

to_Burn_The_Eye 03-14-2005 12:53 PM

Bartender 03-14-2005 12:55 PM

"Classic" recommendations;

Walk
Cemetary Gates
Domination
Fucking Hostile

They're songs most people will be able to tell you (their best known). Not sure if they're their best, though.

I just found out about Evergrey yesterday. I downloaded a couple of songs of their official website and they sounded great. Can anyone recommend me some of their albums or any good songs in particular. I mostly like songs in the instrumental side especially guitarwise but I'm open to any other of their songs that sound good. Thanks for the help.

Dude3 03-14-2005 08:30 PM

Waht are some really good Butthole Surfers Songs?
I heard "Pepper", and I love it. Its awesome.

I want to clarify for this poster: he's referring to Evergrey.

The Hollow
Magdelena
Judith
Three Libras

Those are the only ones I know the names of :-/

Bartender 03-15-2005 01:00 PM

All top quality though.

munky_magik 03-15-2005 01:04 PM

Indeed, I really need to get around to buying 13th Step. They usually have it for £5 in Fopp, but there're usually better things on offer so it never gets bought.

Bartender 03-15-2005 01:05 PM

Both of their albums are in the 4 for £20 sale in HMV at the moment actually, along with a surprisingly good selection of other stuff. Maybe you could pick them up there.

Definetly need to add "The Package" and "The Noose" to that list :thumb:

Bartender 03-15-2005 01:15 PM

Well I didn't want to just give him the track listing to both albums, so I just put what first came to mind.

You could try Sleeping Beauty aswell, and Bréna.

Man I love those songs.

Oh that's cool.

But those two songs are amazing IMO, so I felt they should be on there :thumb:

I bought 8 albums in that sale. 'Album of the Year' was one of the ones I picked up.

I thought, I'm not gonna be able to get them any other time for any less, so I may aswell.

Any recommend me some good Rock/Metal/Prog bands who use a Piano/have a Pianist in the band?
