Yeah Moon on LaL... he's just everywhere. Absolutely insane. Blows my mind every single time.

Lunch 04-09-2006 06:21 PM

I really can't say enough about how incredible Moon and Entwislte are together. The musicianship is outstanding. I love the way they can carry a whole song, and how they open up so many doors for Pete to do whatever he wants. He's not much of a solo guitarist, but he's able to put what he can do over this pure wall of sound and energy supplied from John and Keith and that makes the whole show sound better.

My favorite part on the Isle of Wight DVD is the part in Young Man Blues where Pete windmills and then lets his guitar slide down, then he hits a
couple more windmills and shakes his guitar. Not only is Pete great to watch at this point, but it's so stunning to hear the sound Entwislte and Moon produce behind Townshend's one chord. I would give anything to see the Who in 1970.

I've always loved Moon and Bonham for a number of reasons, but their driving stamina is something that has to be respected. They kept up that power and volume for three hours a night, I can't even comprehend that.
Also just wanted to say Sparks live is one of the greatest things I've ever seen or heard.
Yes man, yes!! Sparks is my favorite song, and Live at Leeds and the Isle Of Wight fest are sadly the only two live recordings I have of that song. But it's still so godly.
If anyone here owns the Maximum R n' B Box Set or even a downloading program, have you heard the song The Ox? I think it was mainly a collaborative effort but Entwistle gets credit for it. It's probably one of the greatest songs in The Who's history, and one of my all-time favorites. Definitely, definitely check it out if you are any sort of Who fan.

Thanks.:thumb:

pigonthewing82 04-09-2006 07:34 PM

One of my favorite stories about Moon is one time they were late going to the airport and all of a sudden Keith yelled "oh my god I forgot something" and thinking it was something like drugs they turned around. He ran up to the hotel room, threw the TV out the window, and said "ok now we can go" :p

To Tusk: I remember when I realized how great Moon was. It was around then that the Who became one of my favorite bands.

Ephemeral 04-09-2006 08:30 PM

I agree with Lunch on the Moon - Entwistle combination. They created just such a large wall of sound that was able to support Pete wherever he went, and it was always huge. There were never any times where the music felt empty. Not once. This is just further re-enforced when listening to LaL.

rockinbass17 04-09-2006 08:33 PM

Well, the most important thing in a rythem section is the marriage between bassist and drummer...needless to say, Moon and Entwistle were possibly had the tightest marriage ever between bass and drums. (though I would hardly call them a "rythem section".

Woah, the name change made me miss this thread for a while.
It's nice though. :thumb:

Has any seen footage of Norman Gunston having water dumped on him by Keith Moon?

Norman is this rather famous Aussie comedian who made a big name for himself playing a pale, balding reporter with several shaving cuts. He was a real icon, and it's amazing the celebrities he got access to. Most of them were Americans, who are born without a sense of humour, but most of the Brits he interviewed got it.

Anyways, he asked Keith a few questions about what's the best way to throw a TV out of a window. He kept at it, and Keith got a cup of water, poured it over Norman's head, and then called him an "Aussie Slag".

Apparently, though, Keith laughed about it afterwards when someone told him it was actually a joke.

The Ox is on the Who's debut album too. It's pretty cool, nice little surf-rock touch to the R&B they were playing at the time.

I really dig that avatar too man. I used to have that picture as my desktop for awhile.

HAHA! Great stuff, I needed that laugh.

Speaking of GREAT rock stories, not as much for laughs or shock value as to imagine the fscking crowd, I know you guys are Who fans, but everyone can appriciate this. http://www.led-zeppelin.com/spotlight/keithmoon77.html

There are rumors that after recording "The Ox," Moonie passed out over his drumset.
There are rumors that after recording "The Ox," Moonie passed out over his drumset.
Speaking of Moon passing out, how would you love to be the guy who was plucked from the crowd to replace a passed out Moon for one of the shows. I mean honestly whever I go to a show before I go I always have some kind of fantesy of whoever I'm seeing say "oh it turns out that we need someone to play guitar with us for the show so could Jim Daly please come up" And that guy got to do it. Though talk about something to live up to.

If my memory serves me right, that guy was Scott Halpin.

pigonthewing82 04-09-2006 10:39 PM

Does anybody know how he did? I mean I assume that he did well because otherwise I don't think it would be as well known, but like I said replacing Moon certainly is somthing to live up to.

PremierManiac 04-09-2006 10:48 PM

According to both Before I Get Old: The Story of the Who by David Marsh, and vh1 he did just fine, considering who's shoes he was filling.

pigonthewing82 04-09-2006 10:50 PM

Good for him, hes defenetly in the top ten luckiest people on the planet in my mind.
I need to get some more Who albms. I only have Who's Next
heh dont worry, were the same. Except mine is their greatest hits. If I order from another country that will cost way too much for me but if I download their songs there's something lacking in it. I dont know, I tend to appreciate music more if I buy the album.
But I do have the isle of wight dvd

StreetlightRock 04-10-2006 12:58 AM

Hey, nice name change. Its so anthemic, I love it!

Riva 04-10-2006 04:19 AM

Good thing they had a decent drummer in the audience, then.
I've asked this before, but do you think you could upload/send me the second disc of the Who's Next Deluxe edition? I really want to get my hand on that live material.I offer e-head in return. And by that I mean I'll upload something for you.

I don't have the deluxe edition of Who's Next. :( I should have searched more for it. I second Lunch's motion.
I'm not sure if I have it or not? I keep hearing of a Who's Next with bonus (Deluxe?) live material. But I've never seen it. Have I?

What I have is what my music service offers. It's Who's Next with what sound like alt takes of Pure and Easy, Baby Don't You Do It, Too Much Of Anything, Behind Blues Eyes, Naked Eye, Water, and I Don't Even Know Myself. It's real good stuff, but it's not "live". Although a few cuts sound like they may of been recorded "live in the studio" to some extent. Moon is great on Don't You Do It Baby. These cuts are of interest and are desirable, but certainly not what I think Lunch and you are describing. It's very good, but not completely unfamiliar to Who fans.
The Isle at Wight DVD is pretty good, similar set list to Live at Leeds. The performance isn't quite the same calibur though. And the Kids Are Alright DVD is a great movie stretching the Who's whole career, at least up until Keith Moon died in 1978.
You are right about the performances. The Leeds shows were just great. And to think they would do that on a nightly basis. And since you mention TKAA I want to mention the VHS/DVD 30 Years Of Maximum R&B. Out of print VHS Available at Amazon used for under $10. A crazy price. Lunch and anyone else who has not seen this, it is a must have. You must own it. VHS or not. If you have an old VCR around, BUY IT NOW. Go to Amazon and read the reviews for yourself. The out of print DVD is a valued collectors item. Amazon has them. Used prices start at $60.00. New in a sealed package prices start at $87.00. That may give you an idea of what you are missing. I tell you what, even though I have the VHS, I am very tempted to grab a DVD. Even at those prices. It's just that good.

Great posting yesterday. I missed it all. I want to address many of these other posts but am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. Only two hours sleep coming, too. If I am lucky. I'll get to all this good stuff later. I really can't even read right now. I just wanted to give you all a heads up about the 30 Years Of Maximum R&B video....

EDIT: The 30 Years Of Maximum R&B video is not a matching peice to the audio CD box set of the same name. So don't be fooled by the name. It's altogether a whole other thing.

EDIT 2: I'm exactly 40 posts behind you in this thread, Lunch. Counting my 23 posts on my first JohnXDoe account, before it was accidentally deleted less then a month into my membership here.. I WILL overcome. :p

Thanks. I saw it in an Uncut magazine so I looked around for it. I have a few decent pictures of Moon exploding his kit with fireworks too. And a rare video drum solo(Not the damned goldfish one).

DeusExMachina 04-10-2006 10:39 AM

Quadrophenia is awesome. I've been listening to it so much lately.

Lunch 04-10-2006 02:47 PM

Thanks for the headsup John, I'll definitely look into that. I didn't even know there was a video until a little bit ago, but it's definitely peaked my interest since I heard about it. I have a VCR still hooked up to my TV in the basement so it would be great to get a copy of it.

Buyer review 1, 3, and 5 are especially insightful and accurate. It really is good stuff. And because the Charlton gig footage has Bell Boy, well, it's just great watching Keith do those vocals.

Also featured is bootleg video of Moon passing out at The Cow Palace in 'Cisco and that guy from the audience getting behind his kit. Pete asking from the stage if anyone can play drums. It's kind of moving, too. Because I think at that point Roger is talking in interview about the incident kind of sadly and then they just show the guy get behind the drums, the band launch's into the song, the guy picks up the beat, and the director fades to black. Sort of symbolizing the beginning of the end. So far as it went at the time. The footage is poor quality but clear, and the sound is audible. But the quality is not really the point. It captures the moment. A moment of Who legend. And it's kind of startling and sad to see given what we know now.

And as one Amazon reviewer said, it has great Kenny clips, too. Even after Moon died this was still a working rock n roll band. And they are powerful with Jones behind the kit as well. Plus it covers the tragedy in Cincinatti. Just excellent.

I'm not sure what you have, your bonus disk is different from mine. Mine has alternet takes of Baby Don't You Do It, Getting in Tune, Pure and Easy, Love Ain't For Keeping, Behind Blue Eyes, and Won't Get Fooled Again on the first disk in edition to the album. The second disck is live at the Young Vic.

I've decided to learn all of Tommy on guitar and vocals. I've always wanted to learn a rock oprea and even though I know most of the harder songs to play on the Wall I would rather learn Tommy. I'm can't wait I've never tried to tackel something like this with my music before. I hope it turns out good.

JohnXDoesn't 04-10-2006 10:28 PM

^Yeah, yours sounds good, too. I have Who's Next on vinyl, so I use my music service for listening and stuff. And I don't know what version I have. This is a bit confusing. I have no idea what Lunch is talking about. And the place I download music from (allofmp3.com) has all the Who albums ever made except Who's Next!. So I can't really go there for answers. Usually when they sell albums it's with all the original bonus material as well. But no Who's Next whatsoever. Weird. I want what Lunch is talking about. Which seems to be a bonus live disc. But I just don't know.

14 live tracks including Who's Next cuts!

Why doesn't the place I buy music from have this? Of all things not to have!

JohnXDoesn't 04-11-2006 06:48 PM

Alright, to compensate for not having that I just pulled seven live cuts off of Thirty Years If Maximum R&B. Three of which are from the Young Vic gig. Bonie Moronie is great!

Yay.

Lunch 04-11-2006 08:18 PM

I really like that box set. Disk 1 is great because you can get most of their early material (that wasn't on an album) in one place. I like disk three also mainly because I could get my hands on The Seeker, The Relay, Let's See Action, and Join Together. I actually don't mind the alternate take of the Real Me either. While it certainly doesn't compare to the original, Entwistle really shines at the end of the song.
