Ninjas didn't use katanas. Katanas were hand-and-a-half, or bastard swords. Far too impractical and slow for a ninja. They'd be more likely to use a Wakizashi, Tanto, or Sei.

i thought bastard swords were just, as u said, hand and a half?! Katanas are curved and Japanese by nature (or at least Asian), where as bastard swords are just a bastardised long sword and short sword and the preserve of the Western world no?

What does bastard mean, when referring to swords?

I'm quite sure that a bastard is someone who was born when his/her parents where not married, and, because of the baby, did indeed get married. Not sure how that has something to do with the sword..

eg, a bastardised pint of lager is a shandy, lager and lemonade

Katanas are indeed Japanese, but that doesn't stop them from being bastard swords.

A Bastard sword is any sword that is halfway between being one handed and being two handed. A Katana would usually be weilded with two hands, but not always. It was a lot more powerful, and faster when weilded with two hands, and there are variants of the katana (notably the dai-katana) which are designed purely to be used with two hands.

Most people think of a bastard sword as a cross between a broadsword and a claymore, but that's like seeing a red Jaguar and thinking that if a car is red, it's a Jaguar.

I just realized how much better MX is then other boards/forums. We have such freedom hear , and we can do so many things. On toher forums your lucky if you can get a Avatar

i used to go on an Unreal Tournament forum, UTBooty in case anyone else did, and that was just as good, if not better
there was a real sense of community cos there were only 200 odd members and we'd all arrannge inter clan matches and stuff
it was all good.....ah, the good old days of UT *sigh*
