i saw them in june and i was suprized on the music they played, i though they were gonna play alot from there new album but they only played lke 3. they played all the good stuff. of course i couldnt see a thing being all the way in the back.

Diatonic Dissonance™ 11-30-2004 06:59 AM

I think they're even.

The first solo in Fade To Black owns the first Sanitarium solo... but the second solo in Sanitarium owns the second in Fade To Black... THEN the third solo in Fade To Black is WAY better than the third solo in Sanitarium. They both have awesome breakdowns where it gets heavy, but Fade To Black's breakdown is better.

So actually, I guess Fade To Black is better.

guitarcreep13 11-30-2004 07:50 PM

Fade to Black:
would you consider that their best?

metal_milita 11-30-2004 07:55 PM

thats a hard call man, i don't think no one could say whats metallica's best song. Fade to Black is way up there though, i don't think theres any other song in which they put so much emotion into, even when playingl live. It has awsome solo's and really catchy riffs and melodies, so i would say its close to being best. However, most songs of theirs before Load are contenders for that, and i could say equally as much for all of them also.

metal_milita 11-30-2004 07:57 PM

however, credits to fade to black for being one of the only songs in the world that was effectively made so sad and depressing that people committed suicide over it because they related to it so much. big up on that.

JACKROXYOU 11-30-2004 08:27 PM

i really love sanitarium but i give into peer pressure so fade to black

I wasn't sure about this, have people committed suicide after listenning to Fade To Black, that we know of?
A couple of years ago I was going through some pretty rough stages myself, and started taking the lyrics of Fade To Black a little seriously, and started thinking how they apply to my own life (Which is the reason, I think, I like Fade To Black so much).
Luckily I'm too weak to actually do it, but I'm sure there are people who could, I'm just wondering if there are people who have?

Theres actually four solos in sanitarium:

1)0:46
2)2:08
3)4:26
4)5:25

Comparing solos is not a reasonable way to compare a song. You've got to take into consideration the mood the song sets.
Which is why Fade to Black is teh PWNage.

Chu 12-01-2004 06:39 AM

See, it really depends again, on what you listen to when you listen to Fade To Black.
If you listen to the song, and focus n the lyrics, you get a totally different result, then if you were to listen to the music (However, the song could not work, unless these two are used together, it's so well crafted).

What I think they should have done here, was to write Sanitarium first (on Ride The Lightning) and have Fade To Black (on Master of Puppets), Sanitarium will finish with that fade effect Fade To Black uses (But in reverse, so it sort of fades out, whereas Fade To Black fades in, get me?). This would have led the song about mental illness to a song about suicide (ala progression!), basically saying mental illness leads to suicide, which, while not always being the case, is sometimes true. Now, only tr00 Metalli-Fans would pick this up, and probably neither songs would have been as good if this was the case, but hey, I was thinking... :P

I love both these songs, but Fade To Black is better without a doubt.

What would be interesting to see how people think: Sanitarium vs. One.

In my opinion Sanitarium ****s all over One. Both in musical(ness? :P) and lyrical content.

ya. supposedly metallica got a bunch of letters from "ex-fans" who let them know that they totally agree with that song and that song helped them commit suicide. i guess they might be commiting suicide anyawys sometime in their life, and that song finished it off for them....

not many with as much passion and emotion and truth as fade to black. besides, i heard it off much music during an ego's and icons presentation of metallica. it was like their mini-tribute.

One for me. It's One and Fade to Black which I can't decide between. I used to like One more, but then Fade to Black really hit me, and now I just can't choose.

btoto 12-02-2004 02:13 PM

One is overrated..............no, actually it's overplayed. It's a good song but it's too popular. When you hear something too much you can't notice how beautiful it is

JACKROXYOU 12-02-2004 03:12 PM

so i should get some kind of monster for the gay shirts

it has the gayest cover of all time

Mister_Che 12-02-2004 03:36 PM

Fade to Black is a sad song, but it was written because their equipment was stolen, seriously. Read it on their site.

As for one, I still like Fade to Black better.

Squirrel 12-02-2004 03:41 PM

Outlaw Torn is their saddest song.
