That song is indeed unbelievable. Flynn sort of made me realize the greatness of Morningrise. I still prefer Orchid, but it definitely has that same older Opeth feel.
I prefer Orchid too. I wouldn't say To Bid You Farewell is unbelieveable, really. I don't enjoy it that much. The intro is awesome, and there are a few great parts within the song, but I just don't think it's that good as a whole.

All the good conversation goes on when I'm not around!
Of course. There are no heretics here.
Which one of the softer songs hit you harder than to bid you farewell?

Darkness 03-14-2006 10:18 PM

To tell the truth, no soft song hits me as hard as Face Of Melinda. I do NOT know why, but Opeth have never topped that song for me.

Crysiss 03-14-2006 10:30 PM

Face Of Melinda hit me the hardest. when i heard the intro, the hairs on my neck went up. And that part before it gets heavy....Oh my god..

Yes! Yes!!!

If you don't care for Bleak and Godheads Lament, I have a feeling we'll be good friends. :thumb:

It's so awesome to hear all the little things about music that excites everybody... I'm not the only one. I'm always the one's out of my friends that is always, "Hey! Listen to that! Did you hear that?!" *Rewinds CD for 30th time*

And no band does that quite like Opeth for me- It always seems like you hear something new each and everytime you listen... The replay value is through the roof, just one of the many reasons why Opeth is so brilliant to me...

As for the softer songs, I was huge into Death Whispered A Lullaby for a bit, then fell back into the serinity of both Benighted and of course FOM... But those two tracks are on such an elavated plain, it's like a given to say... I'd say currently I'm really into Hope Leaves.

gmoneyguy 03-15-2006 12:15 AM
No. You can play a harmony in natural minor scale. Harmonic minor scales are just used way too often in metal.
Natural Minor scale Is only used when You don't know what you are doing,

Shadius 03-15-2006 09:52 AM
Natural Minor scale Is only used when You don't know what you are doing,
That's not true, it depends upon the type of harmonies you want.

Haha, yeah... I'm the the same.
Thankfully, I rarely get a reply of '...Huh?', as most of my friends are, also, the same.
I hope it's mutual.

Ahh.. the glory of proverbially masturbating over a moment of a good song.

Shadius 03-15-2006 10:32 AM

I don't usually rewind songs or listen to songs over and over anymore, I've overplayed too much music in the past and now i'm sick of it. I'd hate to do it with some amazing music like Opeth, not matter how much replay value the tracks have.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I listen to probably at least two Opeth albums a day. But I do it in albums, so I won't get sick of any particular song.

Det_Nosnip 03-15-2006 12:47 PM
Serenity Painted Death is retardedly good.
 It's so true!

ok lateralus 03-15-2006 01:08 PM

I always loved the chorus of SPD, but overall it feels not very well put together, kind of flimsy, and my least favorite on SL.

Same here. I love the intro, and some other parts through out the song, but as a whole...

...I rather Face of Melinda.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:21 PM

I STILL don't know what is so good about that song.

Stormrider 03-15-2006 02:22 PM

Face of Melinda ?

I can't im ALL huge on it and all, but I still enjoy the song...its growing on me every listen.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:32 PM

It just seems really weak.

Stormrider 03-15-2006 02:34 PM

At first, I wasn't realy into it. It was weak. But now, like I said its growing on me.

I have it stuck in my head now :p

Shadows 03-15-2006 02:40 PM

Face of Melinda sounds very odd to me, but I kind of like it for some strange, twisted reason.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:43 PM

I personally think that's the worst song on the album...I got more used to Damnation era clean songs, so the earlier ones sound a bit odd to me.

Jude 03-15-2006 02:56 PM

Face of Melinda rules because

Vocal melodies
Great lyrics
that awesome first electric riff is just amazing when it kicks in

Det_Nosnip 03-15-2006 03:13 PM
Same here. I love the intro, and some other parts through out the song, but as a whole...

Or Benighted. :)

Shadius 03-15-2006 03:21 PM

The clean songs in Still Life just fit in so well with the eerie atmosphere. Plus, they help tell the story.

FOM rules for the reasons Jude posted. Theres just so much emotion/power in it!

Thor 03-15-2006 04:05 PM

Anyone else in here a big fan of Wreath? Right now that's one of my current Opeth favorites.

and also, the long guitar solo in A Fair Judgement is just simply...wow.

Darkness 03-15-2006 04:07 PM

^ I was REALLY into Wreath when I first got Deliverance. Awesome song, and though it's kinda died off on me right now, I still think its the most under-rated Opeth song. That second solo is madness, as well as Mikaels growls on the last few verses.

Tyr 03-15-2006 04:07 PM

I love Wreath, especially when the vocals start in the beginning.

Thor 03-15-2006 04:11 PM

His growls on that song are even more harsh than on just about any other Opeth track I've ever heard.

Darkness 03-15-2006 04:12 PM

Yeah, the only song that he sounds as evil/angry in is Demon Of The Fall, but theres no effects in Wreath! The part where he says a growled line and then a breif clean line.. so awesome.

Thor 03-15-2006 04:16 PM

Yeah, it really shows that Mikael is one of the most talented vocalists to ever come out of the metal scene.

Tyr 03-15-2006 04:18 PM

I just listened to Wreath again and it's even better than I remembered. Awesome!

TojesDolan 03-15-2006 05:13 PM

Yeah I thought Wreath is quite underappreciated.

I started liking it after I watched the documentary for Damnation and Deliverance. That and "By the pain I see in others".

Tyr 03-15-2006 05:24 PM

I need to get Lamentations some day, so I can watch that damn documentary

Stormrider 03-15-2006 05:39 PM

I saw it in a store for 19.99 once. Incrdeible price I would say considering the prices of a cd.

I didn't get it though...

denboy 03-15-2006 05:43 PM

http://dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=570485 9 bucks
free shipping for us customers (as far as i remember... I'm from denmark so I didn't get free shipping)

Shadows 03-15-2006 05:43 PM

I have soooooooooo many Opeth albums I still need to get. :( I love them way too much to live off Orchid and Ghost Reveries alone.

Hopefully I'll be able to match Mike's clean tone on Damnation with my new axe. :D I plan on mastering Windowpane by then, which shouldn't take long since I know the whole song already. It will be the first time I ever learn and record a full song.

Stormrider 03-15-2006 05:46 PM

I only have Still Life and Morningrise :(

I'de like to record, but I dont have any equipment or program too so yeah...

I would liek to learn an Opeth Acoustic song, Don't know which though.

Tyr 03-15-2006 05:48 PM

I've seen it for 199 Skr (Swedish crowns), that would be like 25 USD. That's the cheapest that I've seen. I know, CD's and DVD's are ridicolously expensive here, 25% VAT on almost everything.

Jude 03-15-2006 06:10 PM

I got Lamentations for 11 bucks on Amazon. You can too, try it.

Anyone who sees any website selling Opeth shirts that are medium or small (preferably small) please alert me

=-fukifiknow-= 03-15-2006 09:31 PM

Shadows 03-15-2006 09:34 PM

I want the one that says "Look Your Last Upon the Sun", but I do have a sweet imported Damnation shirt coming as we speak. Check it out:
