Yeah well I'd say their best is either Morningrise or Still Life but a good starting point would be Blackwater Park, or maybe Still Life.

Kaiwaz 12-25-2005 02:20 PM

nah, I wouldn't recommend that at all. What I would do, is get Orchid, and when you have listened to it, get Morningrise, then My Arms Your Hearse etc etc in chronological order. That way, you can see the band slowly change and morph and see all their changes the way it happened. :chug:

I don't recommend doing that at all.

I recommend getting an accessable album, and then exploring them from there if you realise you like their sound. If you're looking for mellow with no heavy or death vocals, try Damnation. If you're looking for what Opeth are usually like, I'd recommend Still Life, Blackwater Park, or even their latest album; Ghost Reveries.

Ghost Reveries may be the most accessable album of their usual "mixed heavy/mellow" style.

Darkness 12-25-2005 02:48 PM

I got a nice new Opeth shirt... has the logo in the front, then "Look Your Last Upon the Sun" on the back.

Shred Danson 12-25-2005 05:54 PM

I finally got the Lamenations DVD, woofricken'hoo!

Moses 12-25-2005 05:59 PM

I wouldn't reccomend Flynn's suggestion at all. Most people that I know would hate their earlier work if they hadn't gotten into the BWP or Ghost Reveries first.

I didn't :upset:

I'm gonna try and order it online in the next few days. I didn't get any Opeth stuff :( but I got a wireless router :D

Whale and Wasp 12-25-2005 07:12 PM

i first got into opeth by hearing "closure", then i got ghost reveries which is alright, and now i have deliverance. deliverance is my favorite opeth album :D would damnation be worth getting?

vashts80 12-25-2005 07:41 PM

Let's put it this way: Damnation is all soft, mellow stuff. It's like all the acoustic/clean electric parts on GR put together., but 100x better

Damnation is how I got into Opeth. I listened to it for 3 months or so before I went on a spree of BWP-Deliverance-Damnation in one day

The Cynic 12-25-2005 08:10 PM

I got into then with D&D as well. Then I got Blackwater Park and from then on in the next week I got all thier albums and The DVD. Then when Ghost Reveries came out I got that as well.

Shadius 12-25-2005 08:27 PM

The first Opeth I heard was a random acoustic track, and I loved the style. It was one of their older songs, probably Silhouette or Requiem. Everyone seemed to be saying their best work was Blackwater Park, so I got that, and I was like... Woah, heavy. The death growls and eerie atmosphere sorta put me off for a while. At this point the only Death Metal i'd heard was In Flames.

Then an online friend who loves Opeth told me they released an all mellow album; Damnation, so I got that and it totally grew on me, so much that I needed more. I listened to Blackwater Park again, and actually started to like it; songs like Bleak and the Drapery Falls worked for me this time around, and eventually I liked at least parts from all the songs on there. Then I just went nuts and bought more and more albums. I have all their albums and the DVD now, and they're definately one of my favourite bands.

The last album I got, oddly, was Deliverance. It's not as bloody heavy as the critics and reviewers like to make out in loads of places; saying it's one of their heaviest albums and such, i've even heard misinformed people say it's all death vocals and stuff like that.

Killtacular 12-25-2005 10:10 PM

Upon watching the documentary in Lamentations, I began thinking about what it would be like if they did the polar opposite of Damnation (Deliverance doesn't count).

A whole album of the purest, most brutal death metal they could conjure up, with no soft, acoustic interludes and no clean vocals at all.

It was at that moment that I soiled myself.

vashts80 12-25-2005 10:19 PM

Orchid? I could have sworn that all of Orchid is growls, no clean vocals, but I can't really remember

Edit: Heh, I got banned from the ultimatemetal forums for saying I'd upload the new Katatonia somewhere and give one person the link. Go figure.

I'd much rather have "Deliverance" then that.

It's not like if they made it that it would cancel Deliverance out so that it doesn't exsist. I'm saying go from Ghost Reveries to brutal, unadulterated death metal.

Darkness 12-25-2005 10:25 PM

That would suck. If I want that I'll just listen to Nile. I'd rather they make another mind blowingly shocking album along the lines of Still Life and BWP.

..Not saying remake those albums, just an ablum as incredible as those.

Killtacular 12-25-2005 10:34 PM

There's a better chance of a brutal death album than them getting even close to Still Life.

Also, Nile doesn't have the patented Åkerfeldt growl.

I seriously think a brutal death metal album would suck from Opeth. You'd just have songs like Wreath over and over.

vashts80 12-25-2005 10:48 PM

Now I realize why I got banned for UM forums...the guys in Katatonia don't want any reviews from people who downloaded the promo, nor do they want people to help spread it. Considering I didn't actually spread it, and I only said "I like songs x, y, and z" I'm gonna try and get in contact with an admin and see if I can get unbanned.

There's a few scattered throughout. It has to have fewer clean than the rest, but they are definetly there.

... and hey :D... the new Katatonia? petethecow@hotmail.com if you have it uploaded! I have a Spock's Beard- Octane link handy if you'd like :D.

vashts80 12-25-2005 10:56 PM

I have Octane, and the promo isn't worth it because it has the uhh...what do you call them things, the dude saying "This is the song x from the new Katatonia album The Great Cold Distance"...I'd just wait for it, that's how good it is

That's your preference. Maybe some people want to hear more older Opeth. It all depends on who you are, either way, I would still recommend, to a new listener, listening to all of Opeths albums in the order of their release. Being so, would make it easy on the new listener to see how they started, what their style was, and what it became in later albums. :p

Killtacular 12-25-2005 11:24 PM

Orchid is too abrasive to start an ( )peth n00b out on.

Darkness 12-25-2005 11:24 PM

But if someone was about to hear them for the first time, I definatly would not say get Orchid. Or even Morningrise.

I think it'd be nice, or at least a heavier album more in the vein of Deliverance. I seem to be one of 5 people who really enjoyed Ghost Reveries, but my only complaint about the album was that it wasn't as heavy as their previous releases. More progressive...probably THE most progressive album Opeth have done, excluding Damnation, but I'd like to hear something a bit heavier next time.

Drunken Viking 12-26-2005 01:48 AM

I'm a new listener to Opeth, I have two of their albums, Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park, can somebody recomend me some good tracks off of those albums, I really wanna get into these guys, I've heard so much good stuff about them.

EDIT: Just saw the above posts, sorry, but could someone still recomend me some good tracks from either of these albums.
