Ghost Reveries is the perfect example of how to craft amazing, original fills. Not only on the toms either, listen to his insane footwork. He rivals Flo Mounier in terms of being able to start and stop insanely quick.

He gives the music, which would just go all over the place with any other drummer, a really organic feeling when going from acoustic to heavy. On the other albums he always resorted to pretty typical death metal blast beats etc. when they went heavy, but on Reveries he keeps the intricacy even when going as fast as possible.

In other words, FARKING A. Lopez is the MAN.
Lopez hasn't ever played a blast beat. A blast beat isn't really fast double bass, it's more like snare/ride alternated with bass very, very fast. And as much as I love Lopez's drumming, he doesn't compare to Flo at all, except in maybe "feel".

I don't really think that Flo has any feel. He's always going a 1000 mph so that never gets shown. I love his work, but in a different context (Damnation for example) I don't think he would be nearly as impressive.

Toaster 12-21-2005 02:19 PM

He has feel, but his feel is always "really fast". :p That's why I say Lopez could compare to him in feel alone, because he can slow it down but still keep it interesting.

Shattered_Future 12-21-2005 02:27 PM

Flo is a brilliant drummer, but it's nigh impossible for him to keep an actual beat.

Werny 12-21-2005 10:57 PM

Oh, ok. I thought a blast beat was just hitting the snare really fast, which he does sometimes on Deliverance.

Flo used to be my favourite drummer (of course there's Tomas Haake but he's too good to be on any metal list) until Once Was Not. He used to, for me, have the right "feel" and "groove" and everything, but Once Was Not is full of stale blast beats and the occasional awesome jazzy fill. No feel at all, just blast after blast. His drumming on And Then You'll Beg is a different story altogether.

That's why I hate it when musicians simplify their playing style to make it sound more accessible.

So yeah, Flo used to be the king.

Moses 12-21-2005 11:30 PM

Flo has the same feel in pretty much every song save a few exceptions. Lopez is a jazz drummer and you can tell, his latin beats just have that groove. Flo on the other hand would be made fun of in the jazz world.

True dat. They're both kings of their respective genres, but put them against each other and Lopez would own. Although some stuff Flo does with fills on Once Was Not is very groovey and skilled, it's still not able to touch Lopez.
I turn 18 in February and I just KNOW that they will come by me the day before my birthday, and of course, it will be at an 18+ venue. There is no other way the scenario will play out. It will be exactly like that. Just watch.
Hey guess what happened oh my gosh Opeth is coming near me three days before my 18th birthday oh my gosh guess what ages the venue is...

All ages

About ****ing time there's a show on a decent night. Now all I have to do is get someone to go with me. November's show was 3 hours away, which nobody wanted to go to. Now there's no excuse as it's only 1 and a half away.

Looks like I'll be seeing some Opeth!

But I probably won't.

the2stranger 12-22-2005 11:41 AM

you will come to appreciate 18+ shows in 3 days though :p

Deth 12-22-2005 11:44 AM

Are North American dates announced then?

Well, there's alot more to "feel" than being interesting while playing slowly. :p It's more a factor of HOW the notes are played, what cymbal colors are used, how the tones are used together, etc.
Are North American dates announced then?
Only the four confirmed ones. PA, Maryland, Ohio, and WV maybe?

heavy metal kid 12-22-2005 03:16 PM

They have to come to California, better yet to San Diego.

/Hoping that and an all ages show.

17th - Towson, Recher Theatre - MD
18th - Millvale, Mr. Small's Theatre - PA
19th - Cincinnati , Bogarts - OH
Those are the 4 confirmed dates.

Hope they come back in my area.

vashts80 12-22-2005 05:00 PM

I'm sad that the only PA date announced so far is in Pittsburgh (6 hours from where I live)

No way I'm gonna be able to make that, even if my dad was willing to go to Pittsburg, which he isn't. I can only hope another Philly date is announced, or a Jersey date is announced

Darkness 12-22-2005 05:09 PM

Few more dates up.

The Sandman 12-22-2005 05:15 PM

They're coming near me in March. I'm so excited. It doesn't matter how much the tickets are because I'd sell my soul to go see them.

If it's over 18's I'll commit suicide. If my parents decide I can't go I'll commit suicide. Actually no I won't...I'll kill them, take all their money and follow Opeth around for the rest of the tour.

It's a plan.

It's in open D minor tuning. If you're in standard you may have a lot of trouble playing it.

The Sandman 12-22-2005 05:48 PM

I can't imagine that they wouldn't play in New York...

Or maybe it's all a biiig conspiracy.

<_<

>_>

TojesDolan 12-22-2005 06:30 PM

Yeah so a question.

Does anyone know the opening chords for "Beneath the mire"?

I have the ones showed in the GP file:

E--5--4--7--
B--3--3--3--
G--2--2--4--

But they just don't sound quite right.

I think it might be an octave higher than it should or wrong finger position.

Darkness 12-22-2005 07:20 PM

Are you in the proper tuning?

The whole album is in open Dmin, amirite?

DADFAD?
EDIT: six thousand. :)

Glad I made it in the Opeth thread.

Yes im in proper tuning. Its going better now. Im practicing only the first page of the tab for now. One part at a time.

Deth 12-22-2005 09:14 PM

It's annoying me so much that I can't get new tabs now.

It's not entirely in DADFAD. Most is... I think.

Does anyone else play in open tunings? I find DADFAD along with other minor tunings amusing. My classical guitar hasn't been in standard for ages it seems. I just tuned it to EGBGBE.

My favorites are CGCGCEb, DGBbGBbD, and DADFAD. Nick Drake started me on messing with my strings. When I heard Opeth used open Dm I was all

I suggest trying open tunings if you haven't already.

It's in Albany NY.

I missed it too....
