I kind of agree, except for MAYH, which is an amazing album
Definitely. I can't get enough of that album, the feeling I get when I listen to it is amazing.

ok lateralus 03-07-2006 08:27 PM

I've been really getting into the song When recently, it's one of my favorites now.

That song is really good. I always get misty the last few lines...

You'd probably appreciate this then:

Me too. I love everything about that song. Fun to play too, except the first solo has annoying fingering.

I'm using By the Pain I See In Others for a school video. :)
I think Still Life and Blackwater Park are their best.
Yeah, me too, Moses.
Best song-writing, IMO.

But God damn..
I just can't seem to get into Orchid or Morningrise like any of their other albums. :\
The production doesn't worry me either.. they just don't seem to flow all too well.

I need to listen to them alot more, I'm sure I'll appreciate them after more thorough listens.
Hopefully, they will grow on me like vines. (<- borrowed from Flynn, sorry. :smoke: )

i am the robots 03-08-2006 07:24 AM

Haha, grow on you like vines... they grope me like the firm, erotic, grip of a loving tentacle monster.

penelope weird hands 03-08-2006 10:20 AM

The Moor.

That is all.

*eargasmspasms myself*

EDIT: Has anyone seen Opeth play any songs from Still Life other than White Cluster? Live, of course.

Shadius 03-08-2006 10:34 AM

They play the Moor and Godhead's Lament all the time. I've read they play Serentiy Painted Death too. They don't usually play White Cluster, they only did that recently as a rare thing, I believe.

They also played Face of Melinda fairly recently too, and Benighted for the first time when they were doing the Damnation tour.

Wo@lcan 03-08-2006 11:37 AM

Opeth is coming to my town in June... I've heard alot of good things about their guitarists and I think I'm going to attend their show but I haven't heard much of them to be honest. Can someone recommend me some songs that aren't too black metal? I'm not the biggest fan of black metal in general...

The 'Peth are hardly black metal.

Songs:

Softer Stuff:

To Bid You Farwell
Credence
Face Of Melinda
Benighted
Harvest
Windowpane
In My Time Of Need
Death Whispered A Lullaby
To Rid The Disease
A Fair Judgement
Isolation Years

Heavier Stuff:

April Ethereal
When
Demon Of The Fall
The Moor
Godhead's Lament
Serenity Painted Death
The Leper Affinity
Bleak
The Drapery Falls
Deliverence
Master's Apprentices
Ghost Of Perdition
The Baying Of The Hounds

Those are the best! Far too many but too hard to pick from. :P

I'll leave someone else to name songs from Morningrise and Orchid as I'm not really to big a fan of those albums.

Stoo 03-08-2006 11:52 AM

BRI??

And the played White Cluster when I went.

Wow I didn't expect that! Thanks man!
What I meant by black metal (I'm not that good at seperating genres like black/death/viking metal and so on) is the "I'm an angry orc" vocals.

I've heard Opeth has some of that :upset:

Opeth are the only band with "I'm an angry orc" vocals that I can actually stand and are easily balanced out with the mellow acoustic passages.

Yeah the band sounds really great but the vocals kinda ruins stuff a little for me. Maybe I'll get used to it over time.

Stoo 03-08-2006 12:50 PM

Its weird hearing someone say Mike's vocals ruin it.

JamJar 03-08-2006 01:06 PM
Its weird hearing someone say Mike's vocals ruin it.
My brother says it sadly. Though, fortunately, he is starting to like them more and more especially after I suggested Damnation to him.

Shattered_Future 03-08-2006 01:51 PM

If anything, Mike makes the music BETTER. Imagine them with...say...Karl Sanders as a frontman. Wouldn't work...
Its weird hearing someone say Mike's vocals ruin it.
My rythym guitarist said this of them after seeing them at Sounds of The Underground:

"Man, they were boring! He wasn't that great of a singer and their songs were too long!" (he's not the most keen of metal fans :p) I proceeded to make fun of his obsession with Dave Mustaine.

Toaster 03-08-2006 02:26 PM

Sanders' singing voice is good for a few laughs though.

yea. Mike has one of the best singing voices in the metal genre. Well, i dont want to make him out as a god, But he does have a great voice.

Missed my concert on the 5th:upset:

My step-dad was going to take me, because he didnt want me taking his truck, but his sister got real sick and she was about to die of cancer.

I was pretty psyched about it, but i understood. Hell i was even getting ready to give him a couple hundred bucks.

Wow... ummm... that's really, really bad and I'm sorry for you and your step-dad's family. That's really bad. :(

TojesDolan 03-08-2006 02:55 PM

The biggest complains I've heard:

a) Vocals
b) length of the songs

Those are the "worst" things aobut Opeth. Then again, growled vocals aren't for everyone. I'll audition for a band at school (it's only 10-13 year old kids) As a vocalist. I'll give them a little death metal esque growling and see what happens. Yeah.

Whale and Wasp 03-08-2006 02:58 PM

aaaah i wish i could growl well.....but i dont know how.....and i sound especially weird when i try to cause im a girl

Stormrider 03-08-2006 03:01 PM

Meh I wish I could sing but...I'm not too good at it. I sometimes will sing along to something, not very good but its OK, then my voice cracks and I shut up :p

Crysiss 03-08-2006 03:04 PM

The only thing i can do vocal-wise is the high pitched raspy thing.

Like BDM, I suck at low pitched growls

EDIT: Sorry gotta rephrase that, i make it look like i said BDM sucks at low growls.
I can do highpitched screams like BDM, there lol

JamJar 03-08-2006 03:04 PM
Meh I wish I could sing but...I'm not too good at it. I sometimes will sing along to something, not very good but its OK, then my voice cracks and I shut up :p
I have a range of about two octaves before i get into my falsetto. (Which I can't control at all.) I'm no good at agressive vocals and I find Mikael's clean vocals to suite my voice (Especially on Damnation, though they're still not great). My growling is inomprehendable. Terrible.

Stormrider 03-08-2006 03:08 PM

I don't have a menacing voice.. whenever i try it like all falls apart. I only soing along to clean parts.

I should sing along more though...

JamJar 03-08-2006 03:13 PM
I don't have a menacing voice.. whenever i try it like all falls apart. I only soing laong to clean parts.

Same typo twice. :P

I sing along even if it sounds awful. Me trying to sing to Maiden = hilarious!

Moses 03-08-2006 03:18 PM

I have about two octaves before my falsetto and I can growl pretty well. Death metal growls are the easiest for me though I can do a pretty good mid-range scream. I have a jazz type singing voice kind of like Mark Murphy's but not quite as good as him obviously. Another vocalist I sing like, whom more of you might know, is Gavin from dredg.

Stormrider 03-08-2006 03:18 PM
Same typo twice. :P

Hehe, fixed that. :p

I dont know, I have no aggressive voice. It doesnt come out as agressive...never. Wimpy me lol

Like I siad with practice I'm sure Ide get a bit better.

Toaster 03-08-2006 03:30 PM

I can growl pretty well, I can do midrange vocals to an extent, but I don't have a good-sounding scream at all. I was born with great control over falsetto, though.

Kelvin 03-08-2006 03:53 PM

Going to see opeth in four hours!!!!:)

Tyr 03-08-2006 03:57 PM

My falsetto's pretty good, and the midrange vocals are pretty decent, as well. Especially the higher ones and my deep, boomy singing (has no clue whatsoever of the name). My scream, on the other hand is terrible, and the growls tend to vary from day to day. They probably don't, really, I'm guessing that my perception of my growls vary... or something.
