Yeah, this is a very good effect. The Birdsong at the start is wonderful.
This dying soul has soul indeed, and not just in the title.
Yeah, i like the way DT dont go too overboard on the sampling but when they do it sounds awesome...i like the deer hunter samples in 'dont look past me' and the sample torwards the middle that kinda carries on the line that LaBrie is singing. He says...'i feel bad about this'... etc |
I just checked my I&W booklet and noticed that Kevmo wrote the lyrics for Surrounded...he did something good other than SDV after all then...
/Prays they play Surrounded next tour. |
kev wrote a lot of good lyrics i think.
i love how misunderstood starts off calm and serenely...then the brooding chorus w/ cellos underneath pops in to kidna give you a taste of the song's direction. then it bounces back into the major melodic section....and then kicks into heavy overdrive ;) and theno f course that whole creepy feedback/whammy section w/ JR's spider staccato riffs. i pissed my pants when i was listening to it at night the first time. JP makes a sound like a monster from hell emerging from teh depths of the abyss. |
Does anyone know the significance of the samples in SDV?
I can understand the significance of the first one 'He doesn't know what a woman is...' but the other ones seem quite random to me. |

Finally bought ToT after listening to it for a while downloaded.
I wonder why fans hated it at first. |
I really like it, it's heavier than alot of the other stuff, and only Vacant and parts of ITNOG are ballads, which are normally what I like most in DT's arsenal.
However, It's much more of a metal album than people are used to, I think, and that puts people off slightly. |
I hate their ballads. James Labrie has the worst type of voice for that stuff.
|
ToT is a great album, I love to listen to it. I also think that many people at the begginnig dislike it because it is heavier than the other ones, and are used to a more slow type of music.
I agree with you, James doesn't have a good voice for balads. |
You two have exactly the opposite opinion to me then.
|
I love Train of Thought, Stream of Conscioussness (SP?) is my favoriote song.

I think their early albums were much more heavy than TOT and certainly more metal. Especially I&W.

James' voice is best on Octavarium, I can't stress it enough.
|
Octavarium is a really solid album, its not the best one but its somewhere around there.
|

I dont know about heavier, but better certainly. I dont think they'll ever top Images and Words and Awake. |

I&W wasn't so consistently heavy. ToT doesn't have a full ballad-type song until Vacant. The opening of Endless Sacrifice is soft, but the song as a whole is still heavy. I&W on the other hand has Another Day, Surrounded, Wait For Sleep... And I agree that James is at his best on Octavarium. My favorite DT albums are a bit different than most people in here. I'd rate 6DOIT and Octavarium both over SFAM, probably over I&W too. |

I think SFAM is better than Awake and I&W, and if it wasn't for the covers, I would say A Change of Seasons is a runner up for Awake. |
I didn't like a change of seasons that much but imo SFAM is their best album yet.

What did you learn? |
I learnt that the Silent man was about Arabian nights, and the voices on Goodnight kiss are Mike's wife and kids.
I learned that Mike is playing a gig with his new Who tribute band, which sounds cool. Lots of other little things, too. and that Mike thinks Vinnie Coluita is the best drummer in the world. NP-Take away my pain(live) |
That's because Vinnie is the best drummer in the world.
|
portnoy doesnt put peart above vinnie?
i thought i knew that site like the back of my hand :upset: |

watch the whole thing, when they do another day and voices its roflmfao |
I just watched Live at Budokan, its good.
|
I have that DVD, it's awesome. My favorite songs from that DVD are As I Am, Hollow Years, Instrumedley, Stream of Conciousness, Pull Me Under, and In The Name of God. And on the other CD of the DVD, I love Portnoy's Drumm Solo.
|
I like the Instrumedley aside from Petrucci's crappy solos.
I think his best solos are on Stream of Conciousness. |
