If you listen to Damnation Moses you'd realize what an idiot you look like right now.
Trust me I've been a fan of the band for a pretty long time and I've listened to Damnation plenty of times, which don't really have his best vocals anyway. I just don't think Mikael is that good of a singer, apart from his death growl and clean emotional quality. |
I think he can hit more then 2 octaves...
|
Jimmy Gilette can hit 6 octaves!!! OMG
I don't like the vocals on Damnation too much. He goes off-key quite a bit. BWP, Deliverance and GR have Mikael's best vocals. |
They don't sound bad for a lack of it, though. They sound great without it. Anyway, isolation years has some smooth falsetto in it. I rekon his range is surely more than 2 octaves. The falsetto from that song compared to his lowest growl? I've even heard him sing pretty low notes before.
Singing to me is pretty much all about the emotional quality. Music being about emotion and all; Mikael singing passionately within an octave would probably do more for me than a huge multi-octave sweeping melody from an Opera singer, which I would get little or no emotional feeling from. Anyway, Mikael can sing very well live too, while playing guitar, which I find pretty impressive, especially given some Opeth guitar parts.
Trust me his range is two octaves give or take a step. I agree about his emotional quality and how it really works for the band but the discussion was about being a technically a great singer. Oh, and tell me Luciano Pavarotti isn't emotional and I'll have to bitch slap somebody.:smash: Definately the most emotional singer of all time in my opinion.
I think he can hit more then 2 octaves...
2 octaves is about average for a trained singer. 3-3 1/2 is very good professionally and 4 is exceptional. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston both have a 5 octave range which is definately phenominal. My fiance has 3 1/2. |
Man, I loved the last part of that interview. I loved how Mike commented that Per "isn't just some guy on the street hitting the big orchestral buttons making it sound all nice and epic"...I laugh at that for some reason, because it's kinda true for a lot of bands, heh
|
His voice is only that perfectly on pitch because they have awesome production.
When I saw them live he hit the notes dead on. In a way, I agree with you on this one though...don't get me wrong, I love Mikael's voice, it's good, and it fits the music beautifully, but it's nothing spectacular. I've heard that some people can do 4, and even that's a bit of a stretch....but 6?! /NP In My Time of Need - Opeth. Listening to this song makes me appreciate the greatness of Martin Lopez's drumming. |
I had a link a while back to a guy who could do 8. No kidding.
|
Mikael's range isn't the biggest, but he's got a decent range.
His voice is really special for me...I love it a LOT. He's on par with Stanne and Allen for best male singer in my book. |

The man is a powerhouse, I can't believe anyone doesn't like Symphony X. They aren't even that technically focused rather than for songwriting, even though they do have their times. |
I've never been a huge fan of Symphony X's vocals. In my opinion they're the weak point of the band. He's not bad, just kind of meh in my eyes.
|
If you saw them live you'd be floored by his voice, like everyone else who was at Gigantour. If you need further proof, the short vocal solo in Wicked is awesome.
|
Are you serious?!
Man, Russell Allen has one of the most powerful male voices I've ever heard. Live, he's 500 times better...it's just phenomonal. Go listen to Of Sins And Shadows, and try to tell me his vocals are the weak point of the band. They ROCK. |
I'll fire up Sins And Shadows now actually. Maybe my opinion will change.
Had to interrupt 'In Mist She Was Standing' though :(. |
That was a cool interview. Did anyone else find it funny that the Martins tore the bassist/drummer needed adds down?.
I agree with Moses; Russell Allen is awesome. One of my favorite vocalists. |
I don't wanna turn this into an SX thread but who else agrees that the intro for The Divine Wings of Tragedy is the coolest intro for an epic song ever?
|
What's the difference with Firefox? I've heard amazing things about it but I don't really get what it does.
Firefox is a more secure, faster browser, that really relies on consumer desires for features, it comes missing a lot of plugins that IE has, but it asks you if you want the plugins that you're missing and allows you to choose what you want and what you don't want *without spamming you with spyware* it also allows you to turn off certain pretty much unnecessary security filters to search even faster. Also, it allows tabbed browsing, which allows you to open multiple sites in a tab format in one window by just pressing ctrl + t to open a new tab, and ctr + # to move to whichever tab you desire. |
One of the weakest points? He has fantastic voice IMO, powerful, good range, excellent control, and can cover a number of different styles. Listen to King of Terrors, Of Sins and Shadows, The Inferno, or Candlelight Fantasia...
I had a link a while back to a guy who could do 8. No kidding.
 That's the funniest thing I've heard all day...8 octaves... |
I had a link a while back to a guy who could do 8. No kidding.
That's like a bigger range than a guitar. |
I don't wanna turn this into an SX thread but who else agrees that the intro for The Divine Wings of Tragedy is the coolest intro for an epic song ever?
Hmm, that's hard. Epics are my favorites. I think I like the Odyssey's intro a little better. |

The intro really pisses me off for some reason...I'm assuming you're talking about the vocal work. The part where the instruments come in floors me every time though. Just finished Of Sins And Shadows...now going on to DWOT. Weird track labeling on my copy. |

I saw him and gigantour, and yes it did kick ***. I don't really care for his studio vocals though.... odd |
That's like a bigger range than a guitar.
I'll see if I can find the link. Yeah, the intro to Divine Wings Of Tragedy annoys me as well. |
I love the vocal work in the intro for DWOT.
On Odyssey vs. DWOT: DWOT intro > Odyssey intro Odyssey > DWOT |
I'm sad that I missed SX, and Nevermore, on Gigantour. I got there towards the end of Dillenger's set :\ I did however see DT and Megadeth, so I was pretty happy. And I got to see Nevermore on Halloween, with a longer set to boot
|
Hmmmm...
Albumwise, I think his vocals are a tad better and more powerful on The Odyssey, but the music is better on DWOT. We missed ****ing Nevermore...we were tailgating, and did so right through their set. |

Man that sucks because the only band I missed (who I was very anxious to see) was DEP. Amazing show though, hopefully there'll be one next year. Don't know how DM will top it. |

Actually it was a chior which he was part of and he might have been mic'd but I'm not sure.
|
I mean, hell, it's good...it goes on for WAY too long though. 10 seconds at most, and it would be awesome.
