Tom is an awful singer that works only in Blink and some Boxcar Racer, AVA whilst awful for other reasons, do not at all suit his voice.

MattSharpIsCool 01-16-2007 05:49 PM

I think he's improved his singing enough. He may not be great live, but he sounds decent enough on the albums.

And I don't see why his voice doesn't fit with AVA. It's still nothing but pop music, and Tom has a very pop-rock-ish voice.

punkfan92 01-16-2007 05:50 PM

if you have ever heard tom sing live you know that he probably has to sing each song a billion times in a studio to get all his songs right. when he sings live you cant understand what he is saying and just sounds terrible.

10571z 01-16-2007 05:58 PM

I Disagree. I reckon his a decent singer with a unique voice. And live he sounded good when i saw blink 182.

punkfan92 01-16-2007 06:01 PM

i heard him live once and he was terrible. it didnt sound at all like it was on the record. i thought maybe it was just a bad night but i checked out other live videos of them and they were just as bad. if you can reccomend a video where he sings well ill watch it and give him another chance. but for now i think his singing live is terrible.

lunchforthesky 01-16-2007 06:13 PM

Hes a bad singer live but hes an even worse guitarist the amount of f'uck ups he manages on really simple songs is laughable.

punkfan92 01-16-2007 06:27 PM

i havent heard him screw up on guitar and he writes pretty good riffs (great riffs in my opinion) but people do mention him being very sloppy when he plays.

MattSharpIsCool 01-16-2007 06:41 PM

Tom seems to have good days and bad days. I've heard or watched live stuff where he sounds terrible, and some where he sounds pretty decent.

I'm pretty sure Tom had a habit of performing drunk (maybe even high, I dont know if he was into that) when he was in Blink. I've seen more than a couple videos of him trashed, which doesn't help.

lunchforthesky 01-16-2007 06:42 PM

There catchy but really easy and simple, he cant even play i miss you and sing.

MattSharpIsCool 01-16-2007 06:50 PM

I dont know what videos you've seen, but I've seen plenty vids of him playing and singing just fine.

lunchforthesky 01-16-2007 07:13 PM

Ive seen them live four times.

punkfan92 01-16-2007 07:14 PM

listen to him sing obvious on aol
i dont know if it is just me but i thought that sucked

lunchforthesky 01-16-2007 07:18 PM

The AOL sessions?
i think ive seen them, its embaressing to watch its so bad.

MattSharpIsCool 01-16-2007 07:25 PM
Ive seen them live four times.
I'm not saying he's a great singer, because he's not. But he can at least carry a tune and play his guitar.

lunchforthesky 01-16-2007 07:29 PM

Honestly is sooo bad at playing guitar, everything criticises him for being bad but he really is abysmal. He played so many dead notes in the whats my age again intro, cant play i miss you properly live, on stockholm syndrome he only plays the high part live as he cant play both that and the low part.

His singing passes now but when i saw them in 2001/02 it was so awful, like buddha quality.

B 01-16-2007 09:43 PM

meh he does what he does and he made millions

he may be bad but he knows what hes doing

DJ Ducksauce 01-16-2007 10:08 PM

Neither Mark nor Tom sing live well from the vids I've seen. Mark is always a little off key as usual, and Tom gets all over the place and slurs a lot as is typical of him.

They both write/wrote good music.

I heard The War on the radio this morning and surprisingly I didn't go "boy that sucked". It reminded me a bit of BCR which was nice. :) First time in a while I think I've admired some of Tom's work.

B 01-16-2007 10:08 PM

box car racer makes me so nostalgic(sp)

DJ Ducksauce 01-16-2007 10:12 PM

Indeed.

Same with Enema and TOYPAJ.

Man, all this is making me sad with nostalgia. :(

I'm going to go put on WDNTW just for the heck of it.

Virus278 01-17-2007 01:06 AM
I thought that was a pretty good song.

What don't you guys like about it?

The intro drags a bit, but other than that, I like it.
Ya, it’s not really that bad. It’s actually pretty catchy and uplifting. Tom just made it out to be really epic but it was just another one of his really simplistic formats so it kind of let me down and annoyed me.

Tom just came up with some electronic tune, repeated it about 1000 times, and then he threw in some vocals just for the sake of having vocals. The only difference between this song and the songs on the album is that this song is like 8 minutes long. I don’t know where the quote is but didn’t he say something like it had like 3 different parts that “took you up and down” or something like that? 3 parts: 1. Four minutes of the same electronic pattern 2. Chanting like a retard 3.Throwing in some decent lyrics. I guess he just thought this song was really epic just because he made this one 8 minutes long.

- Tom, at his worst. He doesn't sing in this, but he fucks up on the G-tar, bad, many times. (listen to the 'slow pretty part' - Mark)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtWOkkhhKcE

- Whole band, at thier best. This was an awsome proformance (If you ignore the annoying presenters.) And Travis only had one foot!

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 03:26 AM

I only heard two missed notes in the "slow pretty part", and that's a pretty easy part of the song to mess up. He had a bad note in the intro too, but eh. Good days and bad days, yo.

Lady: You, sir, need a pedicure. What happened?

Travis: My foot got stuck in Tom's butt.

 Thats the greatest thing Travis has ever said.

Oh, he ****s up alot more than that.

Anyone who plays guitar, listen to this, it's sad. Even his powerchords in the chorus sounds horrible. They sounds so... weak. It's just a pathetic proformance. But, 'eh. He's done some damn good ones too.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 03:53 AM

Ya I guess there are a few more mess ups on second listen. I'm not sure the powerchords are his fault though. His guitar sounds really quiet throughout that whole song.

10571z 01-17-2007 07:31 AM

Hahha the whats my age again vid was pretty bad for tom.. but trav and mark played awsome!

Surtr 01-17-2007 08:57 AM

The "I Miss You" video was insane. Awesome stuff.

I'm actually listening to S/T as we speak..

B 01-17-2007 01:04 PM

man that video wasnt even that bad

he screwed up a few times so what

punkfan92 01-17-2007 02:22 PM

i have seen the rock show and i miss you video but i haven't seen the whats my age again video. man he sucked so bad on that. the "slow pretty" part is the best part of the song and he really ****s it up.

Pazz 01-17-2007 02:43 PM

Yeah I noticed a few off notes. But that is expected when playing live, is it not?

lunchforthesky 01-17-2007 02:45 PM

He should be able to play something that simple. I dont expect Dillinger Escape Plan but he should be able to play that.

punkfan92 01-17-2007 03:03 PM

yeah it wasnt exactly a hardcore solo. it was just a nice easy to play guitar riff. he shoudnt screw up that many times in one song at any show in my opinion. writes great riffs just needs to practice more.

Surtr 01-17-2007 03:44 PM

See that was the cool thing about Blink, Tom fuckin' up simple stuff made it funny.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 04:40 PM

I think it would be pretty easy to mess that part up. They were playing it faster than they normally do, and that's a lot of picking. The one thing Tom has is pretty good pick control, but even that is just tough to play at that speed.

lunchforthesky 01-17-2007 05:05 PM

Do you actually play guitar? If so you must be really really bad.

Pazz 01-17-2007 05:25 PM

That was really sick version of The Rock Show though.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 05:28 PM

Ya I am really bad. What's that matter?

I never said Tom was a good guitar player. All I said is at the speed they're playing, a mistake in that part of the song isnt all that farfetched. He flubbed up two notes, big deal, it happens.

bottlerocket 01-17-2007 05:38 PM

My foot got stuck in Tom's butt.

OH MY GOD I WANT MARK'S BASS IN THE PEPSI SMASH VIDEO. THAT THING IS SO GORGEOUS.

Its not a huge deal but to say he's been playing nearly 15 years its pretty bad.

I woudnt do that and ive been playing four.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 05:41 PM

I'm going to start using that.

I like in the video, Travis says that, and the girl looks like she's in shock for a second. Mark laughs and tries to hold it in. Haha that's my favorite video.

bottlerocket 01-17-2007 05:42 PM

Mark and Tom were NOT expecting that one.
