It is true, Neil Pert is not that good. Maybe if they had less drum wankage and Geddy Lee sang in a register a couple octaves down... :smoke:

Just my opinion, so don't get your collective panties in a knot.
I understand it's your opinion, but Peart set the stakes for that style of drumming. and have you seen any of his DVDs? It hurts my ears to hear things about how he isn't as good or he's overrated after watching those things. He's probably one of the only people in music that deserves most of the praise he gets. Not the best, but you can't deny, he's one of the best.

If you think Neil Peart is not that good, you are missing something. Listen carefully to the drumming; odd times, afro-cuban influences, not to mention originality and most importantly his HUGE influence on current drumming. Mike Portnoy and Danny Carey (as much as I don't like him) are two great examples of Peart's enormous influence on rock drumming.

BludgeonySteve 09-13-2005 05:25 PM

Who cares about odd timing and influence? He sounds great.

I know that. I'm just pointing out the near-sightedness of his comment.

Dream Theater, although they are a great band, the last couple of albums Jordan Rudess has had a huge impact on the sound of DT. They do sound like they are in a sport. Rudess always plays everything to the nth degree, and I think JP wanted to keep up with him. and labrie should die, or at least get fired.

Anyways enough about DT.

Rush. To adress some points made throughout the thread.I don't understand people that say 'they are wankers', becuase of all prog bands out there, Rush IMO has been way more subtle with their talent than other prog bands. They Have always been about the song, and about the melody. Alex's solos have always been short and to the point, and always fits the song. Ive always Loved his playing style. Geddy's bass playing/keyboard playing are extremely melodic. People see him playing and think he is wanking when he is really carrying the melody. As far as his vocals, they may be a bit high, but holy crap, Zeppilin's frontman sounded like a toddler crying after getting yelled at by his mommy, and NO ONE ever complains about his vocals. Pert is an amazing drummer. Theres not much I can say about Pert. Anyone who thinks he is underrated needs to watch the Live in RIO DVD and watch him playing polyrhythms during the drum solo.

Their longevity is a wonder to me. I saw them a couple years ago, (same tour as Live in Rio), and I had chills up my spine for the entire show. It was up there with Tool for me. To say it was spiritual isn't really right, but it felt important in that way. They opened with Tom sawyer. omfg. Alex has done the opposite of most ageing musicians and has turned the distortion up. All the songs sound way heavier live than on the record. What A great show. (although I didnt get the washing machines) The acoustic Resist was a cool beak in the show. I encourage everyone to try to see them once, especially if your not a very big fan. I think you'd 'get it' after seeing them live. They had super-quality sound, and they played forever.

My favorite Rush era is the 80's stuff, namely Natural Science and Subdivions.(THEY PLAYED NATURAL SCIENCE LIVE AHAHAHH HAHAHA! but no subdivions :( )I think that was their most experimental time. Test For Echo, Counterparts, and Vapor Trails are also great albums. As far as vapor Trails, I think seeing it live was how it was meant. Earthshine live was awesome, as were the other new tunes.

If anyone knows a way to get free dvd to mpeg maybe I could YSI a couple tracks from the Live In Rio dvd.

I like La Villa Strangiato better, if just because of the ups and downs it goes through, great range of music. Plus, there's the awesome skill involved.

Hey I'm a big Rush fan but don't have lots of time on my pc so I spend most of my time
in the Tallica or Guitar threads

can some one upload some Rush for me?

I love working man and I've been trying to learn it but my old record
has lots of scrathes and popping so it's kinda hard to hear proper notes

if you could that would be great
Ahhh no! Geddy is famous for his voice, you can't say that. IMO, I love his voice.. it's really a great voice. It's defintely something you need to get used to though. But it's one of those voice's like Robert Plant's.. you hear it and you know exactly who it is.
I hate it when people do that smoking smiley face guy when they want people to think they're cool. I mean come on, drum wankage?

BludgeonySteve 09-15-2005 07:30 PM

Anybody know if Rush will be going back on tour anytime soon?

Distant Echoes 09-17-2005 11:35 AM

I think their working on another original album soon, if not now, and then theyll be touring again. A few pages back i did a ton of research on modern things their coming out with, like their R30 DVD and some other info on their new stuff. I dont remember if i gave a new tour date, but you can expect around mid/end 06 Id assume. Might take longer depending on the amount of stage effects they need to buy and setup
