I was at school yesterday and my metal head freind said "John Petrucci is the greatest guitarists ever!" and I asked why and he replied that he was "technicly perfect" and that lead my couriosity here to ask you guys what should I start with? What is a song that showcases Petrucci's guitarist skills and is less metal? I have heard some Dream Theater before but it sounded loud and distorted but they said "that was their metal album". So I just wanted to ask about it here. :)
check out 6 degrees of inner turbulence (2cd), songs like the glass prison and blind faith, have awesome soloing, I don't like the 2nd cd too much tho

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 03-19-2005 01:18 PM

Any song in particular?

Edit: nevermind I see.

Cain 03-19-2005 01:19 PM

I saw the video for DT's "Pull Me Under" today on VH1 classic. LaBrie had a Napalm Death shirt on. The band looked so badass and underground in that video, though, they should have kept the look instead of becoming prep-student's metal-band look. (John looks bad with his hair all short like that, and so do Mike and Jordan).

There's the complete Master of Puppets cover they did, if you want to see that.

shamed-angel 03-19-2005 01:22 PM

The video for Take the Time is hilarious. John Petrucci pulling all these rock star poses and James just looks so dam camp. Mike portnoy is wearing nothing but a pair of pants and theyve got the colliseum backdrop like on the back of Images and Words. So goddam corny.

Cain 03-19-2005 01:27 PM

LaBrie can't avoid looking camp. But I would love to see Petrucci score more rock star poses.

Like one time, I saw a Whitesnake video from when Steve Vai was in the band, and he did this unbelievable trick where he flipped the guitar onto his knee flat, and put both hands on the neck like you would play a piano and did this unbelievable trick descending tapping lick. Petrucci just stands there concentrating. I would love to see him go nuts more.

Really? weird. I was pretty shocked when i saw one of the napalm Death guys wearing a Dream Theater T-shirt in a picture in Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore.

Interesting. Hmmm. That's cool, though.

well, Dream Theater has played with Napalm Death
well..they had the singer of ND sing Damage, Inc.
have an mp3 of it..and, think Portnoy's talking at the end..eitherway, he mentions Labrie, so meh

Bertovo 03-19-2005 05:31 PM

I would think the new album having a set date, and track list annouced is a bit bigger news than seeing James Labrie in a Napalm Death shirt.

Whatever.

It's on the 5yearsinalivetime DVD. John Petrucci doesnt stop laughing for a good minute or so.

MAthiAS 03-19-2005 07:19 PM

Petrucci should grow his hair again, he looks like a soccer dad.

the one I have is different, probably on the same tour

MAthiAS 03-19-2005 09:08 PM

Is it just me or does that MoP stop after Leper Messiah?

RiceMonster 03-19-2005 09:41 PM
Petrucci should grow his hair again, he looks like a soccer dad.
Agreed. As a matter of fact, 95% of rock and metal musicians should have long hair. Long hair > short hair.

BradyEB 03-20-2005 01:33 AM

Ohh god I think everyone in DT looks better with long hair.

MAthiAS 03-20-2005 01:51 AM

Yeah... with long hair I could excuse JP for just standing there, because he did headbang a little bit. Now with short hair... Sorry John, Alexi's right.
Long hair > short hair.
teh psyned

the2stranger 03-20-2005 03:57 AM

they looked so awesome, especially Portnoy, he had hair that was about 1 meter in diameter

red barchetta 03-20-2005 06:44 AM
Ohh god I think everyone in DT looks better with long hair.
especially jordan... he needs his hair

3rdplanet 03-20-2005 07:48 AM

Rudess has the worst long hair I have ever seen on a person.

It was funny though.

the2stranger 03-20-2005 09:28 AM

I was like  do they have a new keyboardist again?
and after a few secs, oh no, Jordan is bald ;)
I like the long hair better tho

Static 03-20-2005 11:08 AM

shamed-angel 03-20-2005 11:12 AM

ok thanks man :thumb:

shamed-angel 03-20-2005 11:23 AM

NO Problem. 900th Reply :D. Are you planning to buy their entire back catalogue or just what gets reccomended?

MAthiAS 03-20-2005 01:52 PM
ok thanks man :thumb:
I think you'd like Train of Thought more, considering your favorite is 6DoiT

Cain 03-20-2005 01:55 PM

Don't be so sure. 6 Degrees remains my favorite album, and I hated ToT. It had next to none of the harmonic sophistication and layering of that album. Meh, it could go either way.
