I prefer detuning to 8 string guitars. God the band Meshuggah is so horrible.

Yeah, but it's so fun to play after you detune. I usually tune down and then play nothing but BTBAM and Dead to Fall for a couple hours. It's in C# Standard.

I think it is best to write in standard tuning, unless you are in a funk of writing either nothing or very similar stuff.

Then you switch to weird tunings, like DADGDG.

I'm equally untalented and uncreative in every tuning, so it doesn't really matter for me.
