any new progress?
I am currently out of the country at the moment and will be until halfway through January, so nothing will be happening until then. As for Stand or Endpin, I will be using a stand of some sort, I have yet to really look into that and might actually wind up making my own or using a heavy duty cymbol stand. |
This looks great so far!

Get cracking with this EUB Ebe, we need more pics!

Actually did a little work this weekend. I will post a couple pics a bit later, but just starting to get back into it after the holidays. :thumb: |
any updates?
any updates?
Afraid not. Been so busy with other things. I really must get going again on this. Sorry all :upset: |
Well I finally sat down and did some work on this project today. Not a hell of a lot in terms of real visual change, but it was a tricky part that I was stressing about a bit.
I was not sure my routing skills would be up to the task, but it came right. Anyhow, on to the pictures. Just a shot of the central neck core as it currently stands. A bit of a close up of what I have been up to in terms of actual work A decent close up. The inside part is going to need a bit of smoothing and sanding so that the tuning machines will mount flush with the sides. The next steps will be to router the sides so that the neck core tapers from just below the headstock to the bottom. Otherwise, just taking it slowly. Lots going on for me at the moment, but it did feel good to work on it again. |
looks like a clean routing job, the striping on the project really looks nice too
|
Well, got a bit more work done on this project today.
I routered one of the sides, pretty much just did the tapering. I have left a bit of a lip for structural support at this point until I have the fingerboard prepped and ready to be glued. I may still remove the lip before that stage. Anyhow, on to the pictures. Just an overview of the project as it stands. Close up of the tapering. The bass has collected the nickname of Neopolitan (after the chocolate, strawberry and vanilla mix ice cream, you can see why) Just a shot showing the tapering in greater relief. |
Looks very nice hobbes. Can't wait to see the finished version.
|
Well there would have been an update today except for the fact that the specific router bit that I need and was using decided to chip at the bottom, rendering it useless in terms of being able to do a clean job.
Slightly pissed at that becasue when it happened I realised that the shop that I got it from would be closed and I would have to pick it up sometime in the coming week. Anyway, no photos this week, but I might be able to do a bit of work on it during the week. |
Well bought 2 new router bits today, so all stocked up and good to go.
|
Looks pretty pro so far. Looking forward to updates.

You could easily become a carpenter or better yet a luthier!
Keep up the good work buddy! |

Man that is gonna be one hella bass!
Get cracking dude, youve done an amazing job so far! |
Well I did some more work on this project over the weekend. Pretty much just routered the other side, but now you can see the tapering of the neck properly.
Wednesday is a public holiday on my side (Human Rights Day) so I am going to try and do some more work on it then, provided of course I don't have to babysit the idiots who serviced my car and make sure they actually do what I paid them to this time. So on to the pictures. The project as it currently stands, I included the wings to show how they fit with the newly tapered neck (dvd case was to raise it slightly because of the wood "lip" that still needs to be cut away) A close up of the headstock area Close up of the neck core with the wings Angled profile shot to better show the tapering |
Pictures continued.......

Look good so far Hobbes.
|
I'm liking that so far man, .. keep up the sweet work!!
|
looking pretty sweet :thumb:

Looks great! How many passes did you take on each side of the neck with the router?
|
Looks great! How many passes did you take on each side of the neck with the router?
Well I did not so much do passes as to "bore" into the wood and then go in small circular motions to remove the bulk and get close to the straight edge I was using. Once that was done I pretty much only needed to make one pass to get the final product. You just have to be very very very careful about tilting the router even slightly as you can wind up with small gouges in the smoth sides, a damn nusiance. |
I think it should just be a normal bas, as opposed to an electric double.
Eother it looks ace. |
I think it should just be a normal bas, as opposed to an electric double.
Eother it looks ace.
I have sometimes thought the same until you realise just how much wood there is in the actual bass. Back breaker of note. I must actually weigh it in once the bulk of the neck shaping has been done. But I would guess the single cut wing weights in at around 3-4 pounds alone. |
More pictures of minimal progress time.
Today was a public holiday on my side (Human Rights Day) so I got a chance to do a bit more work on the Bass. On to the pictures. The project as it stands, the neck core has now been fully tapered. Close up of the headstock are, I re-glued the split that had occured at the top today, so it is currently up in clamps. Profile picture 001 Profile picture 002 |
Looking good ebe.
You have a nice photography rug. |
hey ebe i noticed on the dark skin (dunno about the others) your avatar has a little white line around hobbes, anyway, i'm a little obsessive compulsive so i cleaned it up.
also; looks like its coming along nicely! good job, can't wait to see the finished product. |
Wow ebe awsome stuff man!
Keep it up! |
Well time for some updates and more photos.
I have been working on the project of late, but just not been taking photos. Got a new computer and needed to get a basic graphics program installed for re-sizeing images. And on to the photos. Just an over view of where the project is. Side view to show the cutting away and beginings of the neck shaping. Close up of the side profile. A shot of the back of the neck. |
More photos.
Side view close up of the headstock. (More shaping will be done to get rid of a bit of the bulk) Angled shot to show relief of headstock shape. Another angled shot. It is actually looking like a playable instrument now. Still lots to be done but the end is in sight and that is a great motivator. |
That looks ace, the headstock is like a giant bottle opener!
|
That does look quite awesome! Is the pen mark a straight line so you can view the taper and contour of the neck better?
|

I think it was just the cut line for the bandsaw... |
I think it was just the cut line for the bandsaw...
Now that you mention it, it looks like it. I was under the impression that you do a slightly angled cut to make shaping the neck easier. |

I cut my necks .125 thicker at the heal compared to fret 1. Nominally, after carving, it's .575 at fret 1 which is .450 for the trussrod and .125 clearance. |
I think it was just the cut line for the bandsaw...
I wish I owned a band-saw. :p That was done with a radial arm saw and about 150 - 200 passes back and forth. Rather tiresome. I will be taking some more photos at the end of tomorrow to show you progress, I have pretty much just shaped the headstock a bit more so that it does not look so imposing, I also planned down the afromosia fingerboard, so that will most likely be glued tomorrow, or today rather. |
My appologies.
I have been re-arranging my photobucket albums and as a result the direct links have changed. I will re-link the pictures this weekend when I get a chance. Sorry for any inconvenience. EDIT: All fixed now, took a lot less time than I thought it would thanks to the fact that the old links where still around with the files names. |
Well I did a bit more work this weekend and nearly fucked up the entire project in one foul swoop.
I will go into the near bugger up a little later on. On to the pictures. A picture of the project as it currently stands, first thing you might notice is the addition of a fingerboard. A bit of a closeup of the fingerboard. Angled shot showing the fingerboard. Here is where I nearly fucked up big time. I was initially going to put a laminate on the front of the headstock (wenge) to match the wings of the bass. But I decided against it as the striping of the neck laminates looked pretty good. Anyway, long story short, DO NOT try and sand something flat by hand or using your eyes to judge if you have gotten it flat using power tools. I pretty much removed too much wood off the headstock so that when I drill the holes for the tuning machines I would not have enough timber surrounding them for structral support. I have solved the problem by using a radial arm saw to cut the face and thus put a proper flat surface for sticking on the originally planned laminate to add bulk and structural integrity. So much for long story short. |
You're almost as slower builder than JP. :p
Looks good, besides the slow progress. |
