fingerstyle 02-14-2006 10:37 PM

I've always said Jaco 'Jayco'... whoops. Maybe its cos Im australian.

BassPlayingPineapple 02-15-2006 04:05 AM

I sometimes say "Jacko" and sometimes "Jayco".

mfb 02-15-2006 02:26 PM

some article about the jaco tribute concert said it was pronounced "Jack-O".

PainKiller8191 02-15-2006 03:12 PM

Shee-nan

and jaco, like taco

Killer Fridge 02-15-2006 03:20 PM
Shee-nan
that makes no sense

gronk 02-21-2006 06:39 PM

Different cultures have different ways of pronouncing words.

Like in America, a Nissan car is pronounced "Nee-Sun", where as here in Australia, it's just "Nis-sen".

I suppose it's the same with brands.

Behringer: "Bear-rinj-ur"
Ibanez: "Eye-Ba-Nez" (I didn't know people actually said that differently...)
Hartke: "Hart-key"
Schecter: "Sh-ec-ter"
Warwick: "Wo (short 'o')-ric" (I've heard someone pronounce it War-Wick, maybe that is correct, but us Aussie's tend to say our words as quickly as possible.)

TheBassStylee 02-21-2006 07:15 PM
For a long time I always pronounced Jaco as "Yah-ko", like it was Spanish, until I realized he's not really Mexican.
Pastorius -- sounds more italian then mexican :p

Nissan - (Nee-saan) the 'a' is dragged like in Saab

ThisUserIsAPipebomb 02-23-2006 03:07 PM
Alright people, I hear too many people going around playing brands they can't even pronounce, so I decided to make a thread where people write phonetically how the brand name is pronounced....

brands such as

hartke
behringer
ampeg
ibanez
aguilar
Gallien-Krueger
rickenbacker
and any others u can think of
Hart-ka
Bear-injure
Am-peg
i-ba-nez

gale-ee-en kroo-ger
rick-in-bach-er

hehheh -- its actually quite close between what we both put, but im insane about cars, like when ppl say *Mit-sih-bish-y* instead of *Mit-sih-bee-shee* or *porsh* instead of porsh-eh* (cars is my other hobby(..?), i guess besides bass) :thumb:

Heh, I say "Mit-sa-bish-ee." So does every other Aussie :smoke:

And I pronounce it "Porsh", although I'm 99% sure it is "porsh-a". Just how I say it I guess.

AcerbicCunnt77 01-31-2007 01:07 PM

I read something forever ago about behringer. and its supposed to be like "bring her" as in bring the equipment.
just saying bring with two syllables like ba-ring.

I'm amazed at how many people say the e in hartke, I never did :(
i've always read it as hark-teh only more composed, don't think ive ever had to say it outloud though.

I say jaco jay-co because its just a nicer name then jacko.

Pastorius 02-02-2007 08:26 AM

Aguilar seems to be the most varying one.

I always say it agg-will-ar

User Name 02-03-2007 09:29 PM

I doubt I've ever said it out loud, but it's always been Ag-wee-lar in my head.
It's probably for the best that I don't say it aloud.

jordan-z 02-06-2007 10:35 PM

When he was a kid his parents would spell it "Jacko" the spelling was later changed to Jaco, as for the pronounciation of it, i always said jaco like taco

I thought it was french-ish like jshaco... maybe were all wrong and he just never took the time to correct anyone 'cuz he was always in the groove of things...

Firstly: why are you bumping a thread that has been dead for over a year?
Secondly: they called him Jocko because he loved baseball, and there was some baseball player named Jocko. Once he became known in the music world, a french guy who had heard his name but never seen it spelled it the French way in a letter, spelling it Jaco. Once he got the lertter he started spelling it that way.

Feel The Darkness 01-05-2009 09:43 PM

for the record:

Ibanez: ee-bah-nez
Aguilar: ah-gee-lar ["gee" not "jee," and most definitely not "gwee""]

sleepless 01-05-2009 10:17 PM

Ta-kuh-mean-uh.

Not an amp brand, but one of the most annoying brand names I've ever heard working in a music store.

Scott01 07-03-2009 03:45 AM

I believe Hartke has a silent T... no evidence to back this up though...

Hartke = Harr Kee

Also

Behringer = Bey-ring-err

Pastorius 07-03-2009 07:24 AM

Silent t, what are you chatting

FunkMetalBass 07-03-2009 03:51 PM

Hartke = Heart Key, no?

gaslight 07-04-2009 03:48 AM

I say "Hart-kee" but I pretty much never talk about Hartke anyway.

I say Behringer "Beh-rin-jer".

I pronounce Aguilar "ag-yill-arr".

I pronounce Ibanez "eye-buh-nez".

Australia "straya".

Pastorius 07-05-2009 05:46 PM

beh ring err
agg will arr
eye buh nezz
hart kuh

Radiobass81 07-05-2009 06:37 PM
eye buh nezz
Actually, the name Ibanez comes from a Spanish luthier of last name Ibañez, although the company is Japanese. So the pronunciation is closer to:

e bah nezz (ñezz).

The Mighty Hoewailen

I think this one is weird, my buddy got one the other day, it's called a hoewailen and its round... he said they were coming out with a head too, which made me wonder if they were going to call it a "hoe wailen head", because that would be wicked.

they're at eastsidesound.net
