the thing against metal to me is that alot of the "metal heads" i know only care about the guitar solos. They dont really pay attention to lyrics and melodies or anything aside from the talented music
that's valid, a lot of metal people i know are like that.

BUT I'M NOT :upset:

really, most "enlightened" metalheads know how to love a song as a whole. i can't stand death metal just because of the vocals, even though the music is normally pretty awesome and sufficiently technical.

Skidmark Steve 10-21-2005 09:42 PM
I like punk more than anything, but i still listen to music that has a litle metal thrown into the genre, like Black Flag, and Nirvana (neither are metal and i know nirvana isnt punk but you know what i mean, yeh?) I like rock though, its pretty much where it all started, so why hate rock? One thing i find about metal, is the different sort of aggression that it has to hardcore punks. Its hard to describe but i think you know what i mean. I reckon a lot of metalheads hate punk though because of all the pop punk bands out there claiming to be punk. I know this is a way overused excuse but in my experience, its just a misunderstanding on both sides.
hmmm....im not getting your point

superdigg 10-21-2005 09:44 PM
hmmm....im not getting your point
there were a lot of points thrown into that dude's argument, but i think his main one was that metalheads didn't get punk, and vice versa. i think this is true for most people, but there are a lot of people that listen to/have listened to both, and thus appreciate both :thumb:

Ghostfire3 10-21-2005 09:58 PM

That's what might be kinda weird about going to a Misfits show. I bet there would be a good number of metal heads and a good number of punks there too. I've noticed that a lot of metal heads like the Misfits, most likely because they like Danzig.

ohh yeah, the misfits are one of the few bands that stayed with me from my transition from punk to metal :thumb:

i prefer them over danzig, too.

uhh yeah, good point, cleverman, there's a lot of crossover.

Nerdcore753 10-21-2005 10:14 PM

I like Punk, I like Rock, and I like Metal. Maybe not everything from each, but that's probably obvious. While I do like it, I can only listen to Rock for a limited amount of time, and usually only certain bands.
meh its decent not really my cup of tea but thats onyl one band i think the only other punk band thats focused more around musicianship is Kylahullut. also the thoing about punk that turns me off is the vocals i hate those nasaly wierd clash kinda vocals.
You should try Nomeansno, they're pretty talented.

SantaDuJuan 10-21-2005 10:31 PM

The closest thing I get ot really loving metal is Alice in Chains, but then again that's just Grunge with heavy metal influnces. I just don't like the BAM BAM BAM BAM!!! of metal which alot of it has. I might like some softer more melodic metal though.

As far as Rock. You know how every white kid grows up listening to The Beatles or AC/DC? I was raised on Biggie and Tupac.

I've never been interested in classic rock, and when I am it's only to look at inlunces of bands I really like. I like one Led Zep song though.

As far as the forums goes my MX love spreads accorss the horizon.

Try Nightwish or Kamelot for the softer melodic stuff.

SkaRobotArmy 10-21-2005 10:40 PM

That guy needs to listen to... PROTEST THE HERO. You won't like the vocals but the instrumental is awesome. Also, try Death By Stereo.
I don't like R&M because i find a) its boring and b) its music for musicians, not for the common ear. Also, a lot of the metalheads\classic rock guys i know are incredibly cocky and stubborn about they're music and won't give anything labelled outside their genre a second look. Also in death metal, the vocals (if you wish to call them that) are bad. I hate to sound so closed minded, but there is no other way to say it. Its not singing, its not screaming, its not even yelling. Anyone can sound deep and scary with a little work. Sure they're good at guitar, but thats not enough to make me want to listen to it.

TakeWarning 10-21-2005 11:40 PM

I like a little bit of metal, and I like alot of Thrash, but some metal is pure shit in my opinion. Mind you, so is some punk.

Culture Shock 10-22-2005 12:11 AM

It seems like people are looking for different things in each genre so that's really where the dividing line starts. I always look for intelligent lyrics in my music that are meant to inspire and inform. Clearly, most kids listen to metal for the sheer musicianship and supposed talent. It's just not my thing.

Yeah, lyrics mean alot to me. Most metal lyrics I've heard are completely meaningless.

Saberpunk 10-22-2005 12:44 AM

The band that i play in is actually far more of a hard rock/metal band than a punk band. I listin to all sorts of music, and to some extent i prefer some hard rock/metal over punk. For example if at any given time i had the choice to play Appetite for Destruction (Guns and Roses, for any of you who might not know) or say Feeding of the 5000 (Crass for you R/M folks who are dropping into this). I would pick the Guns and Roses in a heartbeat. Mostly i just like fast, hard, guitar based rock. And i don't really care what style it belongs to. If i like it, thats good enough for me.

guns_of_brixton 10-22-2005 06:47 AM
They were good. Especially Joe. And I never thought they were "nasely" at all. So far as musicianship, Topper Headon was one of rocks better drummers, period. Paul is a good bass player and always was, Joe was a solid rythmn guitarist, and all you have to do is hear the Clash live to know Mick was a brillant, resourceful, and creative guitar player. Within the genre or outside the genre.
I agree 100%.

Oz Rembrandt 10-22-2005 07:27 AM

I love Rock and Metal.

skankthenspank 10-22-2005 08:02 AM

I like rock, I hate metal though.

User Name 10-22-2005 08:18 AM

mostly, i like punk, but i do listen to everything except rap. from Django to S.O.D. to The Who to Carl Perkins, i like it all. i feel it is neccesary to listen to as many different styles as possible, especially if you are a musician

fender9037 10-22-2005 08:28 AM

i love all rock.. including metal and punk and stuff.... i dont like that really really hard metal though

Natty666 10-22-2005 09:55 AM

i like both rock and punk. the lyrics in punk are more important than the actual music and contain a lot more emotion and reasoning behind them and the guitaring is a lot more simple but rock music is great cos you get to hear really great musicians and good lyrics that although have less of an effect on me personally still have a great importance overall.

i'm not much of a fan of metal but its something that i havent really had a chance to get into. for years i wasnt a fan of punk but at the moment its what suits my frame of mind and i'm always trying to listen to new styles of music and maybe in the future i'll find metal more to my tastes. who knows eh? lol

echos 10-22-2005 10:20 AM

I listen to both punk and metal, I think i prefer punk though just because of the lyrics and the ethics..etc.

My friends like metal, they scoff at punk:(

guitarded_chuck 10-22-2005 10:24 AM

I like both. Punk is generally more about lyrics and the message, while metal is more about the musical side.

If you are talking about the R&M forum, yea it sucks, except for a select few official threads. I don't post much here either though, because my knowledge of punk is limited.

NewKindofArmy03 10-22-2005 10:28 AM

I love thrash. I also like a couple other types of metal, i'm still getting into it.

Bukowski 10-22-2005 10:45 AM

I don't mind older metal like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, but the only modern metal band i regularly listen to is Pelican, and Converge if you're including metalcore. I'm sure if i tried hard enough i could get into metal, but the genre just doesn't appeal to me, for some reason.

Kithkin 10-22-2005 11:06 AM

I don't like wanking on the guitar. To me, it's boring.

I can appreciate Metal for skill, but they don't do anything for me in terms of enjoyment. The way a lot of them play guitar is robotic and clinical and, to me, boring.

I love A Wilhelm Scream because they arrange their songs with a pop brilliance and the wanking isn't purely for wanking's sake.

I love Dragonforce because they're just so over the top. But I can't listen to a whole album of theirs.

fastfingers 10-22-2005 11:07 AM

Any person who constricts themselves to listening to only one or two types of music is trying WAY too hard to fit a stereotype.
Punk wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for good ol' rock n' roll.

real_low_mind 10-22-2005 11:08 AM

I HATE modern rock. It all sounds the same to me. It sounds like no thought goes into it.
I like specific bands more than genres & most bands i like are in the Classic punk category.

Personally I like more than 2 genres of music but I don't think what you said is always true. Maybe some people just simply don't like other genres.

Exactly. For every crappy rock band (Linkin Park, Staind), there's a crappy punk band (The Casualties, G.G. Allin).

Haha, I love when people refer to it as fret wanking/jerking off.

I can't stand metal or most rock.
i listen to a lot of metal, as well as a lot of punk. mostly grunge though, but that can fall under both categories
No it can't

Punk and grunge aren't related, at all.

mcmurray 10-22-2005 01:19 PM

grunge is commonly referred to as a mix of metal and punk, the heaviness of metal and the diy and simplistic spirit of punk

asdf 10-22-2005 01:40 PM

My friend who listens to a lot of oldschool metal was listening to Judas Priest while I was over, and I was actually enjoying it. I found slayer boring, though.

I listen to more metal-influenced things than I do actual metal. Same with punk.

RetiredAt21 10-22-2005 01:41 PM

Slayer is awesome.

Scabies 10-22-2005 02:20 PM

Iif everyone listened to cryptic slaughter no punks would hate metal and no metallers would hate punk

not really...i find punk incredibly boring and hardcore/emo unlistenable.
Yeah, great understanding of the statement "from my point of view".
