Is someone going to review John Butler, or Xavier Rudd? Both extremely talented Australian musicians :thumb:
Theres no real dibbing done in this thread, and even if there was, they would be void due to the 5 or so weeks of in-activity here. I had intentions of doing John Butler in the future, but your welcome to do something on him. Xavier Rudd has been mentioned in here, but has had nothing done on him properly. I have Solace, which is really quite good, so I'd like to see something done on him. :) |
Can I do AC/DC?

Go for it :thumb:

I will do it tommrow when I have my good computer.

The Living End
Lineup - Chris Cheney - Guitar/Vocals Scott Owen - (Double) Bass Andy Strachan - Drums Regarded as a 'overnight success' in the late 90's, the Living End (the end result of a cover band name the Runaway Boys) hit the mainstream aussie radio waves with the song Prisoner of Society off their self titled album in 1998. This Album also spawned the aussie rock anthem, All Torn Down, which is now regarded as one of the greatest Australian rock songs. The boys formed in 1994, with an original band line up of Chris Cheney on guitar and vocals, Scott Owen playing the big double bass, and Joe Piripitzi on the drums. On a high with the sound they made together, the band sent a demo and t-shirt to Green Day to see if they could score a ticket on their upcoming Australian tour. To much surprise, they scored the gig and recorded an 8 tracks EP, Hellbound, to coincide with the Tour. At this stage, they got a little radio attention. By November of the same year, they had headed into the studio for another EP, titled, Its For your Own Good, when it was released in 1996, it gained them huge national radio status, with the JJJ Hit, From here on in. Shortly after that, Joey departed for incoming drummer, Travis Demsey. After playing at such highly regarded Australian festivals like the Falls Festival, and more radio play started the Living End's audience growth. The turning point of the Living Ends career was when they were offered a support slot with fellow Melbourne rock band, Bodyjar. They quickly went into the studio and recorded what later become the mega-successful Prisoner of Society/Second Solution single. By early 1998, Prisoner of Society was a national hit, to the point it was later granted double platinum status. Between juggling commitments in Australia, the US and Germany, the boys headed into the famous Sing Sing studio in Melbourne with the result being the 14 track, self titled album released in October 1998. It is now the biggest debut rock album in Australian History, going 5 times platinum. 1999 saw the highest point of the boys careers to date, with the boys starting the year with the Big Day Out Tour, then travelling with The Offspring in the US and finishing with the Riot Tour in Australia. 150 shows in a year. Over the next few years, the boys saw a new album, (Roll On), toured with some of the worlds greatest music acts (Green Day, AC/DC) and very little time on home soil. After playing the Big Day Out again in 2002, the guys were preparing to record album number three, when Chris was in a car accident, meaning he could play guiatr and was in rehad for months. This put all recording sessions on hold and set group morale low. During this time though, Chris wrote alot of material that helped hone his skills in songwriting. So the Boys headed off to LA to record with producer Mark Trombino of Blink182 and Jimmy Eat World. The result, Modern ARTillery, was a true marker of the bands maturity and ability, combining strong ballads with radio-friendly, rock anthem such as Tabloid Magazine and the hugely succesful, One Said the The Other. I love this band. The technicality of the guitar, the groovy pounding of the bass lines, the way the drums both sit back and take the spotlight every now and again. A great aussie band that showed they had the potential to become worldwidely successful. Nice work hammet and all other contributers. Nice to see this thread bumped.
After my exams I might get around to doing either Destroyer 666 or Psycroptic. |
No one has said anything about Alchemist, Earth or Black Majesty. Ill do Alchemist soon if no body else does them.
Nice work hammet and all other contributers. Nice to see this thread bumped.
After my exams I might get around to doing either Destroyer 666 or Psycroptic.
I bought Terror Abraxas and Phoenix Rising when I was going through a metal stage, Phoenix Rising is a superb album, very solid with some great tracks in Lone Wolf Winter, I Am the Wargod, Phoenix Rising and Ride the Solar Winds. I also have both Psycroptic's albums Isle of Disenchantment and Scepter of the Ancients, great instrumental virtuosity, I saw them live at a pub in Sydney too, I heard they have a new singer these days but they are a great band in regards to the genre and its good to see them get a mention. I discovered a good Symphonic Prog band whilst browsing Prog Archives, might as well post their details as I like what I have heard of their music. The Myriad Biography: MYRIAD is a new band from Brisbane, Australia, formed in 1995 by songwriter/guitarist Matthew Heindorff. Taking influence from progressive rock, acoustic rock and heavy sounds, we aim to play music rich in colour, emotion and diversity. We write in many styles, including everything from simple acoustic songs to heavier progressive rock epics, with an emphasis on harmony, melody and atmosphere. Some of our influences include PINK FLOYD, YES, DREAM THEATER, The CURE, RUSH, KING CRIMSON, LED ZEPPELIN. In 1996, we recorded our debut CD entitled "Sea of the Sinking Sun". On this CD you can find acoustic sounds, abstract textural sounds, atmospheric sounds and heavier sounds, all mingling together to take you on a journey. The album starts with a moody, mellow, contemplative feel, and gradually builds to a driving, energetic end. Much of the music and lyrics on this CD are influenced by the experiences guitarist Matthew Heindorff had whilst living in Japan as a home-stay student for one year. The CD has been described by friends, radio stations and record companies in Australia and overseas as everything from 'strange' and 'unusual' to 'superb', 'unique', 'fresh', 'brooding', 'cosmic', 'uplifting'. In 1998, MYRIAD are continuing with a promotional tour to Japan and the United States of America, before returning back to Australia to record the second CD entitled "Challenge on the Ghost Door". I couldn't obtain a website address for the group but their is a FREE MP3 on progarchives which I really like. The Myriad (AUS)@ProgArchives.com Right click "Save Target As" on the mp3 and its all sweet. |

The Band: Ian Kenny - Vocals Andrew Goddard - Guitar Jon Stockman - Bass Mark Hosking - Guitar Steve Judd - Drums Karnivool are an incredibly promising Hard Rock group based in (Perth?) Western Australia. They made their first mark on Australian audiences with the 5 track EP entitled Persona, which was released in March 2001. After a change in record label the L1feL1ke single was released as the EP's follow up in 2003. The single also showcased a small amount of the the bands awesome live set. The group then left their second label, before heading back to the studios to Indepentantly record their debut album, Themata. As far as this groups history goes with me, I know very little. I've only recently become a fan of these guys after I saw them tour with Cog, and I've been very impressed. Give them a listen, as I'm pretty sure they won't disappoint. Dungeon
What better time could there be to introduce Dungeon, especially with Power Metal rampant around R&M after Steerpike's Featured Genre. As you may have guessed, Dungeon are an Australian Power Metal group hailing from Sydney, Australia. The group formed in Broken Hill during August 1989, and after many different members, they are still around to this date. The Last Announced Band Line Up: Lord Tim - Vocals, Guitar and Keyboards Stuart Marshall - Guitar, Backing Vocals Over the past 16 years, Dungeon have had a total of 19 memebers, not including session musicians etc. If you really want to sort through this mess, look here. After 2 and half years of Line-Up changes, the group travelled to Sydney to record/mix and produce 19 songs. They recieved much praise for their efforts, and promptly relocated to Sydney. It then took another 3 years to find the 'Perfect Band' consisting of 3 Guitarists, a Bassist and Drummer. The release of the Demo CD Changing Moods was soon to follow, and it was eventyually release overseas in 1996. A demo album called Demolition was released in Japan during the same year. Things were looking go for Dungeon (aside from the usual line up problems), with the album selling over 5000 copies in a few weeks and they were recieving interviews from large Japanese magazines. Then, after the material for their second album was demoed, all contact with their record label ceased. This was later revealled to be because of a management reshuffle, and in February 1997 all contracts were terminated. This didn't stop the demoed material selling 5,550 copies in the 5 weeks it was promoted for though. After this incident it took the group a while to reform, before they again sent the demoed material to various 'zines, looking for a little exposure. They recieved it again with rave reviews. The only thing stopping a complete album being released now was finances, and in mid 1998 they had their oppurtunity. 12 months of live material testing and contract offers passed (they had 10 to choose from at one point), before they signed with Warhead Records. Their debut album, Resurrection was released in September 1999. It had taken 10 years, but finally they'd done it. Touring was the word for the next 3 years, and saw them headline numerous Australian Metal festivals, as well open for the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Nevermore, Mayhem and Opeth. Finally the group got back to the studio, which saw A Rise To Power released on the 29th of August, 2002. 2003 saw the group sign an international record deal with Limb Music Products, which resulted in overseas touring and the release of a limited edition tour CD entitled Rising Power. A live DVD was also recordedin Japan and was released as Under the Rising Sun. 2004 quickly saw the writing of a follow up to A Rise To Power by Tim and Stu, and is to be entitled One Step Beyond. LMP also had intentions of re-releasing Resurrection, but decided it should also be re-recorded with current members and better production. The two albums were recorded simultaneously, but suffered the interuptions of tours, line up changes and various other bits of red tape. One Step Beyond was released in Australia and Japan in November 2004, and has so far sold well. Finally, we are still waiting for the re-release of Resurrection, and the last I heard of the band, they had suffered yet another line up change, and a lack of funds. However, true commitement showed through on Tims part, and he sold numerous guitars to help fund an overseas tour (unconfirmed romour). Fuckin' Dungeon! Saw them supporting Megadeth \m/
Shame about the line-up change :( |
Shame about the line-up change :(
Well, I guess it's something Tim's used to by now. It also allows them to have a fresh sound with each release I suppose. |
Should I bother continuing to do stuff for this thread, or let it die?
If so, Silverchair or John Butler Trio next? |
I like to read all of this stuff, Greg, I just find it hard to say anything about it. :p For proof of this, see the ratio of the number of posts to the number of views. It's something like 11:1. Keep up the excellent work, and I'll bump it every once in a while. :-D
I'd contribute, but you took the only Aussie band I know of on your first shot. |
I'll do Silverchair Tomorrow. :)
I guess you can infer the pun in that... :p |
nice Jason :p
I shall do JBT then :) |
You should make individual threads out of some of these, Greg. I'm guessing they would get more exposure that way. You could take part in this grand trend of series, but do yours on Australian artists. Just a thought.
Riva- Congratubations on the starz. |
I considered that when I made this thread. However, I'd seen numerous threads on good unknown artists float off into the depths of the R&M archives. I figured the thread my catch and stick around this way, but I was wrong. I might extend a few of my things and join the current R&M series trend one day.

The John Butler Trio
The Band: Here's a list of the bands line-ups throughout it's history. 0 - 1998 John Butler (guitar/vocals) 1998 – 2001 April John Butler, Jason McGann (drums), Gavin Shoesmith (bass) April 2001 – March 2002 John Butler, Jason McGann (drums), Rory Quirk (bass) April 2002 – November 2002 John Butler, Jason McGann (drums), Andrew Fry (bass) August 2003 – Current John Butler, Michael Barker (drums), Shannon Birchall (bass) The John Butler Trio are undoubtedly Australias most successful Blues/Roots/Folk Rock group since... well, ever I guess. It all began when John became a humble busker on the streets of Fremantle, Western Australia. From there he moved into the local venues, taking advantage of Open Mic Nights and eventually picked up a regular gig at a bar owned by Phil Stevens, the man who would become JBT's manager. Eventually he had a collection of songs ready for the studio, and finding Jason McGann (drums) and Gavin Shoesmith (bass) to join him during recordings, things went ahead. After John Butler was released, a small amount of touring followed, which eventually led to them becoming The John Butler Trio. It was two years before the group released their next piece of work, the JBT EP. Shorter, and more listener friendly songs allowed the for the Trio's first taste of radio play. The group capitalised on this with, increasing their fanbase with a number of small tours, and released their second full length album on April the 18th, 2001. It was entitled Three, and featured the longer length styled songs of their first release. The album went platinum. Extensive touring then followed, and a 2 disc Live album, Living 2001-2002, was released on the 10th of February, 2003. The recordings on that album were taken from a number of different shows during that period of time, and showcased John's live abilities nicely. However, the extensive touring had taken it's toll on John, and saw him disband the Trio in November/December, 2002. Over a nine month period, he recharged, had his first with his wife, and wrote most of the material that would be heard on the upcoming album. August 2003, saw the reformation of the group, with two new members in Michael Barker (drums) and Shannon Birchall (bass). On Decemeber 1st came the release of the incredibly catchy tune, Zebra, and built up a huge anticipation for the release of the new album. 3 months later, the fans got what they wanted, with the release of Sunrise Over Sea. It is undoubtably the group's most popular album, debuting on the Australian charts at #1, and was double platinum after 10 weeks. Of course, the next move was to try and have this success overseas, particularly in the States. Everything The John Butler Trio had achieved at this point had been done through their own independant releases, and the aim was to stay independant. However, after turning town many contract offers, John signed with Lava Records, after a second amazing appearance at the South by Southwest music conference in Texas. The decision ultimately came after Lava agreed to give John the same type of artistic and business freedom he’s enjoyed thus far in his career. Hey sweet JBT FA - Hes an amazing guitarist, i wish he'd get more recognition around here. I said i was gonna do something on him here sometime when this thread started but i never really followed through, heh.
Like one of my frined says: "I like John Butler - If he dosnt like anyone else in the band, he gets rid of 'em" DVG. |
Nice post on John Butler, G Mac mate, keep it up. Truly great trio and one of my favourite artists. His views on staying independent are great for music in general and the artistic freedom obtained by this is obvious in the originality displayed in his music.
|
I'll do Shihad tomorrow, I'm pretty tired. My **** YSI isn't working either! And to the guy that did 8 Foot, Justin HAS rejoined the band. Matt and Sam left to form their old band, Sinate. They're touring NZ in September, I can't wait. Breed The Pain material with Justin on vox = earsecks. ESPECIALLY Perpetual Torment and I Live My Death. I don't know who could possibly replace Sam Sheppard though. He's a great drummer for his style. Their BDO shows always went OFF! And afterwards I talked to Sam, both times I've been. I had an 8 Foot shirt on (home made, haha) and he was real stoked being completely toasted. He remembered me a WHOLE year after! He's the man.

Yeah, I really like to see a band that does it's best not to be artistically bound by producers and record lables etc. I also recall reading somewhere, (I can't remember where or it'd be in the article), that John didn't particularly want to put Zebra on Sunrise Over Sea, but his manager talked him into it. meh... Also, with The Myriad being an Brisbane band, is there anywhere I can find out about their gigs and etc? I know they don't have an official website. Are they even still around? The last they were mentioned in your article was just after 1998.
I'll do Shihad tomorrow, I'm pretty tired. Anyway with The Myriad I haven't been able to obtain any information on them other than that I discovered on the Prog Archives website. I also tried to find information on them off the internet but was unsuccesful. I have the book "Who's Who of Australian Rock" and there is some information in there but it is pretty brief. Myriad Brisbane 1997; Influenced by art & progressive rock. Discography CD: Sea of the Sinking Sun, 97. I shall assume they have disbanded then. If you hear anything about them still being around, let me know :)
I updated those links for you, Greg.
 Sorry, but which links? |
The Skyhooks ones. Have you got your uber connection back?

I've never had an Uber Connection :upset:
And as for the connection where I can download as much as I want, we are currently being held up by issues surrounding heritage. It not looking good at the moment. /is looking foward to not living at college next year. Obviously no-one cares for Skyhooks... :(

Oh I care Jason. I've gotten my hands on more stuff by them since last time I talked about them, as I said in your MNM thread. :)
