So yeah... Anyone like the Melvins?

...Melvins?
It's good when you read the whole thread :p |
Hahaha, I love the Melvins. Didn't really ever think of them as stoner/doom metal though...
|
My favorite stoner rock bands are kyuss and nebula.
|
ive been obsessed with neurosis lately. Ive also recently purchased the candlemass dvd and i like it a lot.
|
That Doom song is maybe the best thing since Black Sabbath, who is the band?!
That, my friend, is The Gates of Slumber. And yes they are amazing! Their debut album is called "Awakening" and it's out on Final Chapter Records. |
Ok, as promised here are some songs by some of the best bands in Doom Metal. I hope you enjoy them. Feedback and discussion would be good. I may post some more later depending on response.
Reverend Bizarre "Doomsower" This Finnish band are literally the hottest property in doom metal right now. And quite rightly so. Spot the Reagers style vocals and bass heavy riffs. A great live band too. While Heaven Wept "The Drowning Years" WHW are at the progressive end of Epic Doom Metal. They've been going ages and singer Tom Philips is one of the best around. Candlemass "Under the Oak" Legends! If you don't like Candlemass, then there's quite frankly something wrong with you. From the debut album - they got even better when Messiah Marcolin joined. Solstice "Cromlech" Solstice are one of my favourite bands. Its doom mixed with NWOBHM and it's ace! Orodruin "Peasant's Lament" Another new band who are great. Taken from their debut "Epicurian Mass" - old school doom holocaust! St Vitus "Born Too Late" No discussion of doom can be undertaken without St Vitus! |
It's good when you read the whole thread :p
I did read that, actually, I just chose to remind everyone. :) |
I have a bit of a liking for the Melvins, but i really have to be in the mood for them. I got into them after Fantomas strangely enough.
I also have 2 Cathedral albums, i assume they fall in this catagory. |
It depends which two you have! If it's the first two they fall into doom if it's any later then it's crap, sorry I mean more stoner.
|
Heh, I have Forest of Equilibrium and The Ethereal Mirror, so yeah, the first 2 :)
Whats Caravan Beyond Redemption like ? |
Listening to St. Vitus now. Weird guitar tone.
|

Joe_fresh: I'm afraid I don't know anything about Millarca. I first heard them on a compilation album called "At The Mountains of Madness " (if you spot a copy on ebay - get it!) and someone kindly posted the two demos on another forum. Here they are: http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca1-Behind_the_tombstone_demo1994.mp3 http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca2-The_shrine_demo1994.mp3 http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca3-Into_the_Forest_demo1996.mp3 http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca4-Devices_demo1996.mp3 http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca5-The_Road_of_Drunstall_demo1996.mp3 http://www.doommetal.com/miskatonic/millarca/millarca6-Carmilla_demo1996.mp3
sweet, cheers. jondur: when you said your gig was on the 27th of march, you also said it was bank holiday monday, but it isnt, its a sunday. Did you mean the 28th? Anyone heard any doomsword? I recommend the album let battle commence. Its quality. |
and this is a helpful thread as I know very little about doom metal. What I've heard so far is some old cathedral, solstice, solitude aeturnus, reverend bizarre and skepticism (which I found extremely difficult to get into). I'll check the links later today :)
|
sweet, cheers.

Check out LLAMATRON
They're probably more drone than anything else, but if you like Sunn 0))) or Khanate then they might tickle your fancy. |
You are good to me, but this school is going to make me an emo kid.
And Matt, there's a metal scene here HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (rubs it in your face)
It's entirely an emo/screamo town here *shudders* the people are so emo "their wrists literally slit themselves" |
kyuss is the best stoner / doom metal ever for me!!
no shoes! just thongs! |
no shoes! just thongs!
no brains, no braun |
It's entirely an emo/screamo town here *shudders* the people are so emo "their wrists literally slit themselves"
 We've got a lot of death metal goin' on here. I feel sorry for ya. |
Anyone heard any doomsword? I recommend the album let battle commence. Its quality.
I've heard of them. They're pretty good :thumb: |
Heh, I have Forest of Equilibrium and The Ethereal Mirror, so yeah, the first 2 :)
Whats Caravan Beyond Redemption like ?
Forest of Equilibrium is awesome, definatly my favourite Cathedral album! |
Jondur: That Solstice song I downloaded was named The Keep, not Cromlech. I'm not sure which one it is though.
|
I can't believe Sleep hasn't been mentioned yet.
Check out Jerusalem by them, tell me if I'm wrong. Best. Stoner. Band. Ever. |
Sleep have been mentioned. Thanks for the downloads, Jondur :thumb:
|
What's the name of your band Jondur?
|
it's called The River
|
I can't believe Sleep hasn't been mentioned yet.
Check out Jerusalem by them, tell me if I'm wrong. Best. Stoner. Band. Ever.
yup :thumb: |
There's an extended version of "Jerusalem" which is around 10 minutes longer and called "Dopesmoker".
I would check out "Sleeps Holy Mountain" first; Jerusalem is more of a trip ;) |
Here you are jondur, some feedback.
Reverend Bizarre "Doomsower" This Finnish band are literally the hottest property in doom metal right now. And quite rightly so. Spot the Reagers style vocals and bass heavy riffs. A great live band too.
(No downloading for me, already own it) Quality band. Quality song. The best thing about this band is the way they do their epic songs (Cirith Ungol 20mins+) they just dont get boring. Unlike other bands such as sunn o))) and esoteric, they manage to engage me throughout the song. The song doomsower starts straight away with a sweet Sleep type riff. This is then accomponied by Albert Mangus' fantastic voice. Like i said before, a fantastic song, by a quality band.
Candlemass "Under the Oak" Legends! If you don't like Candlemass, then there's quite frankly something wrong with you. From the debut album - they got even better when Messiah Marcolin joined.
(Already got this one too) I'm not sure i agree with you here jondur. I reckon their best album was this one, althought nightfall is still a classic, i wouldnt say they got much better though. The 1st 30 sec or so up to when the vocals come in a amazing. A sweet riff, with a quality solo/filler/riff thingy. And then Johan Lanquist comes in with some top bollocks singing, and the song gets better.
St Vitus "Born Too Late" No discussion of doom can be undertaken without St Vitus!
Guess what, i've lost this album!! After crying for 14 hrs i went off too look for it, cant find it. Gonna have to buy it again. AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH.
Solstice "Cromlech" Solstice are one of my favourite bands. Its doom mixed with NWOBHM and it's ace!
Good band, currently only own lamentations, which is an excellent album.
Orodruin "Peasant's Lament" Another new band who are great. Taken from their debut "Epicurian Mass" - old school doom holocaust!
First time i've heard orodruin. Sweet intro riff, in fact, a sweet song. Good vocals, heavy guitars. Riffs sort of reminscant to candlemas but "fuller" (if you see what i mean). A nice black sabbathy solo. I think i will have to get this album.
While Heaven Wept "The Drowning Years" WHW are at the progressive end of Epic Doom Metal. They've been going ages and singer Tom Philips is one of the best around.
A **** good band. Everything about them is good. I thought i would add some more songs into the discussions. (Dont know how to upload music, if i work it out, i shall update this post as soon as i can) Trouble - Trouble - Pyscotic Reaction Normally i avoid christian bands like the plague. But not this one. This band is very black sabbathy, loads and loads of groovey bluesy riffs. (Althougth notably better singing). And plenty of excellent solos chucked in for ****s and giggles. Pagan Altar - Volume 1 - Judgement of the Dead After nice symph intro, a quality riff comes - (You have probably realised up to this point that my vocabulary mainly consists of quality and sweet, you're gonna have to bear with me) - plenty of solos in this song, plenty of nice riffs. Some nice nasally singing which gos perfectly with the music. Doomshine - Thy Kingdom Come This new band is definatley worth following up on. This album just blew me away. Cant really say much over the the usual sweet and quality, which doesnt do this album justice. Mirror of Deception - Forgone - Ship of fools Nice band this one, sort of like a laymans version of doomshine. Lots of nice simple riffs, with some good singing. Nice, this post is longer then my A level physics coursework. |
stoner rock is apparently my favorite genre..
|
stoner rock is apparently my favorite genre..
i wouldnt of guessed |
Jondur: That Solstice song I downloaded was named The Keep, not Cromlech. I'm not sure which one it is though.
It was named wrong on the CD for some reason (ie the file name) - trust me it's called Cromlech. And it's an absolute belter! |
There should be more Melvins discussion in here.
|
I'm not sure i agree with you here jondur. I reckon their best album was this one, althought nightfall is still a classic, i wouldnt say they got much better though.
Surely this the traditional doom arguement? Along with Reagers vs Wino!
Good band, currently only own lamentations, which is an excellent album.
Both "New Dark Age" and the "Halcyon" EP are excellent. Halcyon is closer to Lamentations - NDA has lots more uptempo NWOBHM moments.
First time i've heard orodruin.
Great, great band. One of the best new bands.
I thought i would add some more songs into the discussions. (Dont know how to upload music, if i work it out, i shall update this post as soon as i can)
I'm using http://s19.yousendit.com/ rip the music on to your pc and just upload it to that site and then post the link. |

So as always the doom thread dies......
To ressurect have a listen to these: Doomshine "Shine on Sad Angel" Excellent epic doom. Penance "SpiritualNatural" Quality classic doom If you don't like these tracks then you're obviously a cretin. |

Wow. Where has this thread been all my life. Awesome. Dont let this one ****ing die guys! We need a regular 'slow' metal thread to make those death threaders look bad ;)
Down the tempo you cunts!! |
