By the way (still to Aes)... is one of the bands you're in Manifest? Or are you just hosting that site or something?
Haha. Yeah, it's for this Wednesday. I thought something overly patriotic for the occasion would be suitable. :)

Yeah. I play Lead Guitar for that band. That's me on the left of this picture (with the blue cap):

We are not overly fantasic. Nothing ground breaking or anything, but we can hold our own.

Except normally we're in 3D in real life.

moaner, however, was really good at hide and seek in school. All he did was stand side on.

He does still have to be careful in strong winds, however.

Good to see that Trigger is Aussie made too.

I keep money and firearms in my hat.

As to the winds- I can't even go outside in the UK winter, why do you think I'm on mx so much?

Hey there, guys. I'm Lucas and I play guitar...I'm one of those obsessive people that practice for at least a few hours every day...I also greatly enjoy creative writing, history, and drawing. I don't post in here too often, but I've wanted to. So I saw this thread and decided to post.

It's worth mentioning that my avatar is actually my younger brother.

KKKKKocaine 01-27-2005 12:04 PM

It's worth mentioning that a brand new manufacturer going by the name 'Behringer' is offering an entire range of equipment for cheap as free.

The astoria? possibly, don't think so.

The tube stations i was always at were Russel square and south Kensington, and the hotel was near Euston station.

After this fell back to the fourth page of threads, I thought it was just about time to post in it...

Umm... Anyone had any great gigs or anything lately?

the_uber_penguin 02-08-2005 06:06 AM

I'm doing guest guitar with my brothers band (pseudo-blues/indie-rock) called The Impressionables. I've got the overdriven part on their cover of Creep by Radiohead.

We've got a warm up gig on the 15th for a battle of the bands on the 18th, the first prize being 5 days in a local recording studio.
We got a call from Emergenza but we're deciding to sit it out this time around and establish ourselves more, plus no-one can make it to the meeting.
We got some small independant label interest from FRG so we'll be putting together a demo for them maybe on the 15th.
The bands going pretty well.

SonorKen 02-08-2005 11:02 AM

My main band Stagefright is going well, were getting ready for a VERY busy show season this year. The side project I am forming is going VERY slow. It is hard to find the level of musicians I am looking for. I found a singer who is phenominal, he has been compared to Maynard and Aaron Lewis. You can check him out at www.pxarmy.com. A review of his singing is at http://www.thevoiceconnection.com/sethkelleylink.html

My bass player is killer. He is pretty much a genius. He is 19 and is a Junior in college majoring in Physics. He has about 7 years of school left so his involvement with the project long term is a mystery. The guy can flat groove and is a perfect example of not judging someone by thier age. He has only been playing for 5 years but is like a fish in water, he is just great.

I am investing some serious money into this new band. I am building a studio in my home, I started on it this week. I have debated the thought of a sound booth but don't think I am going to build it, I think that I would be better building a portable plaxeglass drum shield. I think that the shield would keep alot of drum bleed over from happening. I use gates on all my drums and on the VOX mics but there is always a tangible amount of sound that gets into the vox and instrument mics.

I have a cool idea for the home studio as well. Of course I am sound proofing it, which entails wrapping insulation around the beams, a solid steel door, blow in insulation, dry wall, and a very specific sound proofing drywall over top of that. Once this is done I am going to run conduit inside the walls to house XLR cables. This way I won't have cables laying all over the studio floor. Basically you will go to a "station" (guitar, bass, vox, drum, and 1 spare) station and just plug in. The cables will come out of the conduit directly into the sound room.

I want the room to inspire thought and creativity so it needs to be stimulating. I am going to paint the room a deep purple with a lime green flame pattern on the bottom of the wall with the flames accented in oranges, reds, and yellows (Im a bit of an artist). I am also toying with the idea of painting a copy of Van Gogh's "A starry Night" on the ceiling. This would take some time but I LOVE to paint and I find it very relaxing.

I think as far as sound for the studio to write music Im going to go with some Community cabinets, a couple of Crown 2000 watt power amps and a 32 channel Behringer mixer. Im going to build an effects/eq/gate/compressor/limiter/power refresher rack inside the sound room which will be in a nice glass cabinet.

I plan to move my Sonor Delites into the studio and not play shows with them anymore when the new all maple Sonor 3005's are available. I have about $25,000.00 dollars in the Delites and thats just too much money to be hauling all over the country. When I am playing music full time, which will hopefully be soon, I'll use the Delites.

Anyway, Im really excited about my bands this summer. Stagefright is taking some huge leaps forward. We had a little rough time early January but were all friends, worked our problems out and are back to having a blast. We are getting so popular that we have people wanting to play with us for free! So, we have added a percussionist which is cool, I have always wanted to play with a percussionist. Stagefright is going to be playing some shows in other citys so watch for us if we play close to ya. Anyway, thats whats been going on with me hahahaha.

Aes820 02-08-2005 04:15 PM

One of my bands is playing a gig on the 25th. We haven't prepared much, hopefully we'll just wing it. We arn't too serious anyway, we just like getting up on stage and having some fun.
My other band is having a bit of a hiatus. Our vocalist decided to go and take herself a holiday in Bali for a few weeks. So we havent been jamming, but hopefully while she has been away she has been able to come up with some ideas for lyrics.

I've been trying to save my money... So no $25,000 drum kits for me.
But the big news is that I have gone and bought myself a house, contracts of sale are being orgainised amongst the solicitors and a formal settlement has been tentatively scheduled for early March.
It's a beautiful free standing three bedroom place down in the suburbs. In a real 'Mr Rogers' Neighbourhood. I'll be living there myself, but will rent out a couple of the rooms to help pay off the morgage.
Finally, a castle I can call my own. It's exciting yet nerve racking.

the_uber_penguin 02-08-2005 04:43 PM

I just got Fostex FD-4 off E-bay for £132 :excited:

Don't you just love saving a few hundred pounds on ebay? It gives you that warm tingly feeling.

the_uber_penguin 02-09-2005 07:07 AM

It really does. I saved ~£370 I've just realised I don't know if it's possible to edit what I record on there on the PC. It should be though...if not I can hijack my guitar teachers equipment.

Trigger_003 02-10-2005 05:11 AM
... But the big news is that I have gone and bought myself a house...
Congrats man! :thumb: That's awesome.

Actually, what everyone's been doing is awesome and I have to go so I won't comment on them all, but Ken - what you're doing sounds sweet as.

Um... my conductor for the concert bands I'm in (who's also the keys player in the jazz band I'm in) has just been appointed Musical Director of the Australian Youth Concert Band... that's like, woah! He wants my friends and I to join... yay, 5 bands lol.

Well, I'm just getting forced off the computer here so see you guys later.

moaner 02-10-2005 06:47 AM

congrats on the house aes.

Ken, soun ds like you might be starting to make some serious money with your band... What genre are ya?

KKKKKocaine 02-10-2005 07:12 AM

Aes, will the house have a room you can convert into a practice space or recording area?

Wow, after almost 5 weeks or waiting for my drum mic clips to arrive, they came!
At 9am when I was in bed, and thus were returned to the post office so I can't pick them up for another 2 days.
w00t.

Either that or it was the risky condenser I bought.
Either way I am vexed to an intense degree.

Oh SonorKen, It's good to see the pit retards didn't get you de-modded. Zakath deserves a deleted account and nothing less.
It's almost humerous how the group of users demanding your de-modding consist of people who have been banned many times, hacked the forum, spammed the forum e.t.c.

I'm getting a laptop soon that I plan to use for my home recordings :). Is there any way to make sure I get the clearest possible quality when recording distorted electric guitar?
congrats on the house aes.

Ken, soun ds like you might be starting to make some serious money with your band... What genre are ya?
The band I am making the cash with is a VERY popular cover band in the area. The band I am forming and building the studio for is still in its infancy. If I had to place the sound in a genre I would probably say Technical Intellectual Progressive.

Big 123 there.

Thanks for the well wishes, moaner, Trea, KKKKK.
Aes, will the house have a room you can convert into a practice space or recording area?
Well, there'll no doubt be a few rooms spare. Seeing as I've got a whole house to fill, yet only enough actual furniture for perhaps two or three rooms.

There's a pretty large workshed out the back yard, but that'll need a heap of insulating before it'll be suitable for playing in. It is still very possible tho, but perhaps that's a long term thing.
Heh. Don't think I haven't thought about it.

11.90 pound mic has arrived.
Back electret.
30Hz-18kHz.

Extras - Foam Windshield, shock mount. Assortment of things in japanese such as feed back postcards.

First impressions.
When I put in my headphones just to listen to the mic picking up noise in the room, I was dismayed. It was making an unusual scraping/buzzing noise. A 3 second investigation revealed this to be my nails scraping the carpet near the mic. It was much more sensetive, or seemed to be so, than my larger diaphragm back electret.
A quick vocal check revealed that it was more suseptible to pops and sibilance, the foam windshield fixed this somewhat, however, in a real vocal situation, the vocalist would be further away from the mic, thus reducing problems.

I haven't tested it properly yet, as I just got back from college, but I will soon. So at the moment, it is looking to be money well spent.

KKKKKocaine 02-11-2005 12:45 PM

Oh, it's pretty heavy too.
