I don't dislike screaming, gargling, etc. but I've found very few bands that I thought made that work well...I guess I've always liked to hear a real voice. My favorite exception though, is definetely Haggard. If you've never heard of them, buy, download, sell your soul or do whatever you have to do to get awaking the centuries. Its way worth it. Otherwise, I gotta agree that since Metallica brand metal faded out, its tough to find good metal bands...
Metallica brand metal is pretty terrible. If I wanted to go see a bunch of hairy men with their cocks out acting bad ***, I'd go to a wrestling match. Doom Metal is where it's at motha ****as.

My Dying Bride, Tiamat, and Sleep

Neurosis doom metal aswell?

I despise Joe Satriani. And Yngwie Malmsteen and all those guitar 'virtuoso' players. Musical wankery in it's purest form IMO. It's all sterile to me.

Yeah, maybe. They're a little more post-metal.

Yay for stupid genres.

I Love Fat women 01-19-2006 05:33 AM

close the contest?

Disco Donkey 01-19-2006 12:38 PM

Screaming is only tolerable in small doses and if it's not done off-key, which a lot of new metal bands can't seem to grasp. Other genres that use screaming seem to be able to do it somewhat melodically. Thrice, anyone? Even other not-so-good bands like Silverstein manage to make it sound a notch just above complete a$s. Metal bands...eh, not so much.

Ok first of all i'll say that i somewhat agree with Yngwie, I think he's really talented but he's way too repetitive, and a lot of his stuff is the same type of music, scales and pentatonics, etc... he never varies it really... Joe satriani i disagree with you on that. I think he's amazingly talented, when I hear him play i really feel that he almost sings through his guitar, yeah, simple chord arrangements but its all about the feel.

Disco Donkey:

I agree with you that some bands just scream for the sake of screaming, I sometimes enjoy just a basic scream on some heavy songs. Thrice is great they are great at screaming and singing, but i think find sometimes It's too much and i'd rather just listen to a growl and some wicked guitar.

*Just bought in flames/trivium tix YEAH!*

WhatILivefoR 01-19-2006 07:10 PM

So, go check out Mercury Switch. They're metal/experimental/awesome and from my area. Pretty sweet. They're becoming more well known, but I don't know if I've ever seen their name on these forums before..

...if you're into breakdowns smashed with melodic guitar and singing.

RunAmokRampant 01-19-2006 10:22 PM

Yngwie is worse than joe I agree. All he tends to do is play scales fast.
Metal is doing ok atm like it always will, it's metalcore that's dying in the pits.

And sometimes screaming or "singing" off key can be used for an artisitic effect like Converge for example. But Converge are the only ones who do that well anyway as far as I can tell.

SubtleDagger 01-20-2006 05:24 AM

The Locust and Me And Him Call It Us do it all the time and it sounds great.

Disco Donkey 01-20-2006 11:40 AM

Screaming (or even singing) off-key can be used to add to the artistic impression of the song. However, too many bands--mostly metal bands--that I've heard lately don't do it for any sort of artistic reason, they just do it to sound fashionable and end up sounding ridiculous. Let's take Slipknot, my favorite "metal" punching bag: when they sing, they're decent; when they scream, they're obnoxious and lame.

SubtleDagger 01-20-2006 06:07 PM

Ah.

Well, yeah. It annoys me more when he raps though. Or just "talks menacingly".

Jetpack 01-20-2006 07:00 PM

oh yeah thats the reason i can't listen to them, i hate his stupid rambling ffs!!

RunAmokRampant 01-20-2006 08:34 PM

Meh. The only slipknot song I actually like is "Eyeless". Not a big fan at all. Too many gimmicks and the such

Disco Donkey 01-21-2006 08:35 AM

Yeah, those ridiculous masks that they all wear are probably to shield them from getting punched in the balls when they're walking down the street. If people don't know what they look like, then they won't know what testicles to stomp in.

I'm ashamed to be from the same state as them.

I find The Locust to be too goddamn odd, to tell you the truth.

To much screaming and all that.

I don't mind it. For instance, I dislike listening to DEP because of the senseless screaming (at times), I can't stand it a lot, at least using earphones.

Other than that I'm pretty receptive of music. That can't even be put into that label, you know, it's not not accepting...

Wait. I'm confused now.

Bottomline, let's all hold hands and sing you know

RunAmokRampant 01-21-2006 07:03 PM

Hmmm DEP don't have senseless screaming if you mean screaming "**** you!" and other random insults like Slipknot and other bands similar.

Jetpack 01-22-2006 01:20 PM

ok so i judged the ****... when do i actually give it places? 1st 2nd 3rd etc... I guess i can do it right away if i want to right?

Dont agree with the post 1999 "metal sucks" thing. What about Tool? I know they´re from before, but they are still going strong. And how about Deftones? Kickass vocalist Chino Palmero, does some pretty good screaming.

Dont even want to discuss Slipknot, I don´t consider it music really...

U guys do know Tool right? :naughty:

My five favorite bands would have to be

1. The Pixies
2. The Mars Volta
3. King Crimson
4. Six Organs of Admittance
5. The Dillinger Escape Plan

All five of those bands, has written countless albums of material that are better than anything Tool has ever done.

Third Eye 01-23-2006 10:55 AM

the pixies, figures...
Cant say bad stuff about Volta, i went to Roskilde Festival partially to see them (altough they cancelled, bastards...)

Truth be told, I dont really care what u think, heh, u just keep on horassing other bands, if that makes u have fun...

The Mars Volta do rock by the way... and Deftones :naughty: truce?

1. Your first sentence makes you sound like a pretentious idiot.
2. Post-"grunge" crap like Tool is not art. It's in the same league as Candlebox as far as I'm concerned.
3. It's not "deep and emotional". To be honest, most music isn't.
4. I've read more than enough of his lyrics from all his projects and he's a giant moron. Being anti-christian and having insipid theories about human biology does not qualify you for the Smart Artists Club.

TojesDolan 01-23-2006 02:22 PM

Music has been in demise ever since it's invention/discovery/performance.
