wait, does yours have a tremolo?? that kicks ***
Yeah. An OG Kahler. ESP... I've been hearing that a lot lately, but I always thought I was immune because of the ASAT body style, but even that's been catching some flack lately. joe |
joe i love you...er your bass

I love the looks and feel, but the pickups were waaay to hot for me. Not what I was looking for at all.
dont mean to sound n00by, but what do you mean by "hot"?? |

They have a high output value I *think*.... |
dont mean to sound n00by, but what do you mean by "hot"??
The term "hot" is usually applied to high-gain high-resistance pickups. |

it's a tribute, but it still kicks butt! wow! i haven't even owned this bass for a week yet and i'm already whoring it a lot! |
I wish I could post pictures in this thread.
|
Dammit Joe, you're making me miss my G&L. In traded it for a Lakland.
Oh well, I'll post pics anyway. Yeah, I really wish I could play that bass again, I think that fact that it was kind of uncomfortable at first, but I eventually got really used to it makes it even better. And as far as Stingrays go, the Lakland get way closer than the G&L to getting a Stingray sound. |
I like this thread.... I think I'll bring it back to life.....
:) joe |
I like joe....umm this thread as well. I almost got a G&L, got my ibanez instead.

lowsound
sorry. |
sorry.
My ibanez blows the tribby that I was going to buy out of the water. It is a 1985 musician, made in japan, dual humbuckers, ect. lowsound |
There's only one thing that keeps G&L basses from the top 10 on my list. Their electronics.
The electronics, when in passive, are great, but on every one I've owned (about 12, old and new), and played (another 5 or 6) the minute you put them into active mode, they have a hum. As I said above, every single one I've come in contact with. I've played them through different setups, in different venues, etc, and they've all hummed in active mode. For the money you pay for them new, I'd expect them to be hum free. I've even tried to shield the cavities with copper foil, and that didn't even stop the hum. |
Were they grounded properly?
lowsound
I don't think that 12 of them would all be improperly grounded. Also, of the 12 I owned, 6 of them were brand new. If they came from the factory with improper grounds, then that would show signs of poor quality control. Besides, it's not just me. On other forums that I have frequented, others have said the same thing about the G&L active circuitry. It's something in the treble portion of the circuitry. If you turn the treble all the way down, the hum almost goes away (not entirely, but almost). Of course, with the treble control turned down all the way, the bass tends to sound too muddy and boomy. |

My washburn six string does that, did it do that when you owned it? lowsound |

lowsound
A bit. With that one, it depended on what was around it. With the G&L's I owned, they did it all the time. |
the only G&L bass i'd ever consider is the one set up like a MM but the thing is where i live..thier about the same price...so i'd just go MM...
|
I've wanted one for a while but my local GC doesn't carry them so I can't even try one. How are the Tributes compared to the American ones? Are the necks thick like a soda can or more like a P bass?
|
I still like G&Ls a lot. I love playing them. Their tone is ace.
With all the "Show me Yours!" threads starting up, I thought this deserved to be up here ;)
joe
d00d...I have three G&L 6 strings at the moment (Tributes: ASAT, Legacy Premium, and Invader) but tomorrow I am going to pick up a BARELY USED 2006 American JB-2 with hardshell case for $700 Canadian dollars. I know...crazy. It'll be a great addition to my studio as my only bass right now is the uber under-rated Ibanez SRX 300. Anyway...with your avatar...I was wondering if you play any of that killer bass stuff on Costello's 'This Year's Model'...man the playing on that is incredible. Run and slide, run and slide. The six strings: |
if g&ls had 6 strings and 24 frets they would apeal to me much more, they do sound mint though.
|
Here is my new beautiful JB-2...
