Gus & Frank
Bass: Matty Dav Guitar: Chris Burley Drums: "Hat" Keyboard/vocals: Gus Russo Guitar/vocals: Frank Skywalker Gus & Frank are an awesome Melbourne outfit. They play an extremely funky brand of..... I don't know what you'd call it? You be the judge! Gus met Frank when he was playing backing keyboards in an inner city pizzeria. Gus noticed how Frank captivised his audience when he would come up to them and ask "whoooooo ooooordered laaaasagneeee???!!!" Over the next few years they sat in their home-made studio writing music passionetly. One night when they were playing at a pub in Melbourne they met up with three other "dudes" and decided to ditch the drum machine and get a real band together. Since then "Gus & Frank" have infiltrated the music scene with their unusual blend of throbbing bass riffs and infectious melodies. Frank takes his audience on a captivating journey through twisted tales of love gone wrong, psychotic serial killers and deviate fairytale characters. Well this thread has been quiet so I might do another one.
Japunga (Metal) Jef Carter- Guitar, Vocals Luke Lawrance- Bass, Backing Vocals Rudi Weber- Drums Forming in October 2001, Japunga got themselves a reputation for being and extremely heavy and brutal act, yet remaining positive. The music is written by Guitarist/ Singer Jef Carter who writes about his near death experiences and misfortunes. He feels that this is something listeners can relate to in "the real world". With their recent achievements including and album release "Light At Days End" on July 7th 2004, completing a national tour around Australia and performing at the brilliant "Big Day Out" concert, Japunga are leaving everyone who see them stunned at the sheer brilliance of their music. Information and mp3 downloads can be found at Japungas website: http://www.japunga.com Sorry for not linking you all to direct mp3's, but i dont have a yousendit account, and really arent to bothered to register one at this stage. |
You are not required to register for YSI, nor use any E-Mail addresses, which makes it incredibly simple. :)

An adelaide band im ure you adelaide people have heard of....or not
FALL OF REASON Bios::.. At the beginning of 2003 the band ‘Fall Of Reason’, became an established entity in it’s own right. Its aim is to become a significant part of the Adelaide music scene. The band has many influences, but it has developed a style of its own, ‘Fall Of Reason’ are an original musical act, consisting of five members, all with a strong history in music. All members are of a relatively young age (everyone under 20). The band members have had experience playing within other bands and as solo performers, playing in front of large crowds. These young men have a thirst to strive within the music industry and create a base within Australia. ‘Fall of Reason’ have created a strong live performance which leaves a lasting impression on their audience. The band has a tight live show and a CD that demonstrates what it is capable of achieving. The band has played gigs all over Adelaide in venues such as the Austral hotel and the Crown and Anchor and is looking for more exposure to audiences in Adelaide. The band has also played the Hard Rock café in Melbourne in May 2004. As a relatively new band with a dynamic live show, they are looking for more work within the Adelaide music scenes and a chance to play with some heavier acts also. Fall of Reason has impressed audiences who have witnessed their live shows. The backbone of the band is indeed its live performance. The band’s style has been described as a mix between heavy rock and metal. Many heavy rock and metal acts have inspired the band to create their own style of original music over the time they have been together. The local music scene within Australia can also be listed as one of the major factors that have helped to create their unique sound. With vocals that range from clean melody to heart wrenching screams, coupled with the sound of crushing guitars, unique timings, the sound of the hard drums and a deep bass, an intense musical experience is provided for an audience. Not necessarily associated with scenes in the Adelaide music industry, they are simply out to play good music and get their music heard wherever possible. ----------------------------- FurbZ Name: Adam Instrument: Linguistics Gear: 47 midget llamas….. I checked out Japunga and I liked what I heard! Although I'm not a huge fan of metal bands, but It was entertaining music!

I just realised I never posted what I thought of The Dirty Three, Colditz Glider and Hobb's Angel Of Death.
The Dirty Three are really quite good. I managed to find Horse Stories and Ocean Songs on my college network, so I've heard a bit more than what br3ad_man uploaded. I'll admit I haven't listened to an album through yet (I will), but the violin fits the music very very well. I see why they have no vocalist, they don't need one :p Colditz Glider, from the one song I've heard (my request for more still stands gaslight), they seem fairly good. There was one or two points in the song that I found didn't seem to flow 'right', but other than that it was quite interesting. I imagine gaslight hit the nail on the head when he says this group should be seen live. It's a pity I have no money because they will be in Brisbane soon I believe. :( Hobb's Angel Of Death. I definately wasn't aware Australia had produced any Thrash acts worth listening to. Once again I was ignorant. To me the vocals don't seem brilliant. Inheritence also seems much more appealing to me than their S/T. The S/T doesn't really have much as far as production quality goes. Anyway, if your a Thrash fan definately give these guys a listen. |
Melodyssey
Lance Howard - Vocals Clint Vincent - Guitar Luke Williams - Drums/backup Vocals Dan Vincent - Bass Previous Members Paul Howard - Bass DJ Ryzer - Turntables Releases: Melodyssey (EP) - 2001 Distance And Regret (Album) 2003 Melodyssey are from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. As theur name suggests, they are quite melodic, but they also pack quite a punch. I guess nu-metal would be a fair genre to give them, but don't you go thinking of them like Linkin Park or "those" kind of bands. They have so much more substance. Their first EP was quite hard hitting, with a bit of punk, but mostly rap-metal, not only due to the DJ, but Lance also took on the rap style a fair bit. It's strangely cool to see the little guy bust out those lines with the force he does, sound like Geddy Lee the next line, and scream half a minute later (see Operate). The DJ left the band after the EP was released, and with that, a lot of the electronic sound was lost. So they went more melodic, and not so heavy, but their technicality could be heard much better. Aquaplane, while being relatively soft, is one of their more intricate songs. Also, they tried a bit of experimenting, so their musical "softening" hasn't meant they have gone stale. Live shows is where Melodyssey are at their best, I've seen them quite a few times over the years. They feel so much more powerful in the live setting, and with a good crowd, the place can go ****ing nuts. If you happen to see them, and they close with the song Operate, get in the pit if you aren't already! A few new songs have been played live, and it seems they are keeping the melodic sound and power levels about the same, but they have been adding a very atmospheric and epic sound to their songs, which I like quite a bit. They are working on a new album at the moment, and possibly planning to release again this year. Recommended songs: Operate Bullrush Distance And Regret Aquaplane http://www.melodyssey.com/ |
Nice blue, I managed to find the Melodyssey EP the other day on my network. It's pretty good, I'd definately buy an album released by these guys. Hearing them play more melodic stuff without the DJ would be good to. Does the vocalist keep the rap style vocals on the second release?
As for them being awesome live, I believe every word of it. I get the same kind of feeling listening to this EP as I do when I listen to studio recordings of Karnivool (who are so much better live). Hopefully I'll see them live myself some time :thumb: |
He does a little bit, but the album is mostly singing with a bit of screaming

The huge success of their two albums, national tours, break- through chart positions and exposure in the main stream media has never before been seen in this country by a Heavy Metal band. They have had an amazing amount of Television exposure with multiple screenings of their videos and an array of interviews and features on NZ Television shows. The self-titled track, '8 Foot Sativa' as Voted by viewers, was number 1 on M2's top 12 for 7 weeks and remained in this chart for seven months. They also won 'Best New Act 2002' on Squeeze TV's Award Show, as well as being voted number 18 of 'the Top 100 Videos of all Time' on C4, by New Zealand public. The band has received more TV exposure than most of NZ's mainstream pop acts. The debut album HATE MADE ME entered the NZ Album charts at number 43 and the new album SEASON FOR ASSAULT entered the NZ album chart at Number 6! Beating all other rock releases, including Heavyweight International names such as Nickelback, Lincoln Park, Evanescence, and Audioslave amongst others. It was also the 2nd highest New Zealand artist after Hayley Westenra. HATE MADE ME is now 1000 sales away from Gold Status in NZ and the new album SEASON FOR ASSAULT is halfway there, in only 3 months. Champions of Heavy Metal and Rock radio shows, 8FS became the "most requested band" on the ROCK NETWORK, New Zealand's biggest Rock station. 8-Foot Sativa have toured New Zealand four times over 2002 and 2003, The 3rd tour in early 2003 included dates with USA band DISTURBED, the week before the most ambitious project to date: The 2003 WORLD TOUR. This featured dates in LA, NEW YORK, AUSTIN, TORONTO, LONDON, HONG KONG, SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE. These include the South by Southwest Festival -Texas, Canadian Music Week Showcase - Toronto, and the highlight show, supporting Brazilin Metallers, SOULFLY at London's legendary venue the Astoria. 8 FOOT SATIVA have played with many profile bands including Metallica, Pantera, Soulfly, Children of Bodem, Disturbed, Corrosion of Conformity amongst others. RIP IT UP Magazine gave both their albums a 5 star review and all reviews of the albums and live shows have been outstanding. No one had before us. Suddenly, though, we were the band that had to make it for Australia" - Red Symonds The late '60s were a very tough time for the Aussie music scene. Few homegrown artists were recognised overseas. All that changed when a pub band from Melbourne started to catch attention with their outrageous lyrics, catchy songs and upbeat lyrics. Skyhooks released their first album in '73, entitled Living In The '70s. Not only was it the highest selling pop-rock album in Australia's history, it was also the first album to have 6 of its 10 tracks banned from commercial radio. The band continued to release their procative lyrics, despite constant pressure from parents, censors, etc to tone down. They became the first Aussie band to tour the U.S., and soon developed the image that would define glam rock in the '80s. The 'classic' lineup of the band was: Graham "Shirley" Strachan (vocals) Red Symons (guitar, vocals) Bob "Bongo" Starkie (guitar, vocals) Greg Macanish (bass, vocals) Imants "Freddie" Strauks (drums, vocals), aka "Freddie Kaboodleschnitzer" The albums are: Living In The 70's Ego Is Not A Dirty Word Straight In A Gay Gay World Guilty Until Proven Insane Hot For The Orient I have provided for you all some free music. Riva, that's so awesome :)
Edit: Is someone going to review John Butler, or Xavier Rudd? Both extremely talented Australian musicians :thumb: |
It's been said already, but Silverchair. Daniel Johns is a genius. If you haven't, and I'm sure most of you haven't, listen to Neon Ballroom and Diarama. INSANELY good writing and singing. And he's one of the only singers to not use any pitch correction on his voice. And he still sounds better than most.
Is someone going to review John Butler, or Xavier Rudd? Both extremely talented Australian musicians :thumb:
Theres no real dibbing done in this thread, and even if there was, they would be void due to the 5 or so weeks of in-activity here. I had intentions of doing John Butler in the future, but your welcome to do something on him. Xavier Rudd has been mentioned in here, but has had nothing done on him properly. I have Solace, which is really quite good, so I'd like to see something done on him. :) |
Can I do AC/DC?

The Living End
Lineup - Chris Cheney - Guitar/Vocals Scott Owen - (Double) Bass Andy Strachan - Drums Regarded as a 'overnight success' in the late 90's, the Living End (the end result of a cover band name the Runaway Boys) hit the mainstream aussie radio waves with the song Prisoner of Society off their self titled album in 1998. This Album also spawned the aussie rock anthem, All Torn Down, which is now regarded as one of the greatest Australian rock songs. The boys formed in 1994, with an original band line up of Chris Cheney on guitar and vocals, Scott Owen playing the big double bass, and Joe Piripitzi on the drums. On a high with the sound they made together, the band sent a demo and t-shirt to Green Day to see if they could score a ticket on their upcoming Australian tour. To much surprise, they scored the gig and recorded an 8 tracks EP, Hellbound, to coincide with the Tour. At this stage, they got a little radio attention. By November of the same year, they had headed into the studio for another EP, titled, Its For your Own Good, when it was released in 1996, it gained them huge national radio status, with the JJJ Hit, From here on in. Shortly after that, Joey departed for incoming drummer, Travis Demsey. After playing at such highly regarded Australian festivals like the Falls Festival, and more radio play started the Living End's audience growth. The turning point of the Living Ends career was when they were offered a support slot with fellow Melbourne rock band, Bodyjar. They quickly went into the studio and recorded what later become the mega-successful Prisoner of Society/Second Solution single. By early 1998, Prisoner of Society was a national hit, to the point it was later granted double platinum status. Between juggling commitments in Australia, the US and Germany, the boys headed into the famous Sing Sing studio in Melbourne with the result being the 14 track, self titled album released in October 1998. It is now the biggest debut rock album in Australian History, going 5 times platinum. 1999 saw the highest point of the boys careers to date, with the boys starting the year with the Big Day Out Tour, then travelling with The Offspring in the US and finishing with the Riot Tour in Australia. 150 shows in a year. Over the next few years, the boys saw a new album, (Roll On), toured with some of the worlds greatest music acts (Green Day, AC/DC) and very little time on home soil. After playing the Big Day Out again in 2002, the guys were preparing to record album number three, when Chris was in a car accident, meaning he could play guiatr and was in rehad for months. This put all recording sessions on hold and set group morale low. During this time though, Chris wrote alot of material that helped hone his skills in songwriting. So the Boys headed off to LA to record with producer Mark Trombino of Blink182 and Jimmy Eat World. The result, Modern ARTillery, was a true marker of the bands maturity and ability, combining strong ballads with radio-friendly, rock anthem such as Tabloid Magazine and the hugely succesful, One Said the The Other. I love this band. The technicality of the guitar, the groovy pounding of the bass lines, the way the drums both sit back and take the spotlight every now and again. A great aussie band that showed they had the potential to become worldwidely successful. After my exams I might get around to doing either Destroyer 666 or Psycroptic.
I bought Terror Abraxas and Phoenix Rising when I was going through a metal stage, Phoenix Rising is a superb album, very solid with some great tracks in Lone Wolf Winter, I Am the Wargod, Phoenix Rising and Ride the Solar Winds. I also have both Psycroptic's albums Isle of Disenchantment and Scepter of the Ancients, great instrumental virtuosity, I saw them live at a pub in Sydney too, I heard they have a new singer these days but they are a great band in regards to the genre and its good to see them get a mention. I discovered a good Symphonic Prog band whilst browsing Prog Archives, might as well post their details as I like what I have heard of their music. The Myriad Biography: MYRIAD is a new band from Brisbane, Australia, formed in 1995 by songwriter/guitarist Matthew Heindorff. Taking influence from progressive rock, acoustic rock and heavy sounds, we aim to play music rich in colour, emotion and diversity. We write in many styles, including everything from simple acoustic songs to heavier progressive rock epics, with an emphasis on harmony, melody and atmosphere. Some of our influences include PINK FLOYD, YES, DREAM THEATER, The CURE, RUSH, KING CRIMSON, LED ZEPPELIN. In 1996, we recorded our debut CD entitled "Sea of the Sinking Sun". On this CD you can find acoustic sounds, abstract textural sounds, atmospheric sounds and heavier sounds, all mingling together to take you on a journey. The album starts with a moody, mellow, contemplative feel, and gradually builds to a driving, energetic end. Much of the music and lyrics on this CD are influenced by the experiences guitarist Matthew Heindorff had whilst living in Japan as a home-stay student for one year. The CD has been described by friends, radio stations and record companies in Australia and overseas as everything from 'strange' and 'unusual' to 'superb', 'unique', 'fresh', 'brooding', 'cosmic', 'uplifting'. In 1998, MYRIAD are continuing with a promotional tour to Japan and the United States of America, before returning back to Australia to record the second CD entitled "Challenge on the Ghost Door". I couldn't obtain a website address for the group but their is a FREE MP3 on progarchives which I really like. The Band: Ian Kenny - Vocals Andrew Goddard - Guitar Jon Stockman - Bass Mark Hosking - Guitar Steve Judd - Drums Karnivool are an incredibly promising Hard Rock group based in (Perth?) Western Australia. They made their first mark on Australian audiences with the 5 track EP entitled Persona, which was released in March 2001. After a change in record label the L1feL1ke single was released as the EP's follow up in 2003. The single also showcased a small amount of the the bands awesome live set. The group then left their second label, before heading back to the studios to Indepentantly record their debut album, Themata. As far as this groups history goes with me, I know very little. I've only recently become a fan of these guys after I saw them tour with Cog, and I've been very impressed. Give them a listen, as I'm pretty sure they won't disappoint. Dungeon
What better time could there be to introduce Dungeon, especially with Power Metal rampant around R&M after Steerpike's Featured Genre. As you may have guessed, Dungeon are an Australian Power Metal group hailing from Sydney, Australia. The group formed in Broken Hill during August 1989, and after many different members, they are still around to this date. The Last Announced Band Line Up: Lord Tim - Vocals, Guitar and Keyboards Stuart Marshall - Guitar, Backing Vocals Over the past 16 years, Dungeon have had a total of 19 memebers, not including session musicians etc. If you really want to sort through this mess, look here. After 2 and half years of Line-Up changes, the group travelled to Sydney to record/mix and produce 19 songs. They recieved much praise for their efforts, and promptly relocated to Sydney. It then took another 3 years to find the 'Perfect Band' consisting of 3 Guitarists, a Bassist and Drummer. The release of the Demo CD Changing Moods was soon to follow, and it was eventyually release overseas in 1996. A demo album called Demolition was released in Japan during the same year. Things were looking go for Dungeon (aside from the usual line up problems), with the album selling over 5000 copies in a few weeks and they were recieving interviews from large Japanese magazines. Then, after the material for their second album was demoed, all contact with their record label ceased. This was later revealled to be because of a management reshuffle, and in February 1997 all contracts were terminated. This didn't stop the demoed material selling 5,550 copies in the 5 weeks it was promoted for though. After this incident it took the group a while to reform, before they again sent the demoed material to various 'zines, looking for a little exposure. They recieved it again with rave reviews. The only thing stopping a complete album being released now was finances, and in mid 1998 they had their oppurtunity. 12 months of live material testing and contract offers passed (they had 10 to choose from at one point), before they signed with Warhead Records. Their debut album, Resurrection was released in September 1999. It had taken 10 years, but finally they'd done it. Touring was the word for the next 3 years, and saw them headline numerous Australian Metal festivals, as well open for the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Nevermore, Mayhem and Opeth. Finally the group got back to the studio, which saw A Rise To Power released on the 29th of August, 2002. 2003 saw the group sign an international record deal with Limb Music Products, which resulted in overseas touring and the release of a limited edition tour CD entitled Rising Power. A live DVD was also recordedin Japan and was released as Under the Rising Sun. 2004 quickly saw the writing of a follow up to A Rise To Power by Tim and Stu, and is to be entitled One Step Beyond. LMP also had intentions of re-releasing Resurrection, but decided it should also be re-recorded with current members and better production. The two albums were recorded simultaneously, but suffered the interuptions of tours, line up changes and various other bits of red tape. One Step Beyond was released in Australia and Japan in November 2004, and has so far sold well. Finally, we are still waiting for the re-release of Resurrection, and the last I heard of the band, they had suffered yet another line up change, and a lack of funds. However, true commitement showed through on Tims part, and he sold numerous guitars to help fund an overseas tour (unconfirmed romour).
