Val Emmich - Privacy Attracts A Crowd
It has a very poppy sound in my opinion. The clean guitars, the drum beat, the singing. I could definately see this song being whored by MTV. But that's not the point. Also, the verses had the same chords as Taking Back Sunday - You're So Last Summer, they were just played in a different timing. A little off-putting that it sounds so similar, but that's forgivable

They have a similar sound to The Get Up Kids, just with another vocalist. The whole song in general doesn't exactly lack energy, but the fact that it's a slow song played electric doesn't make me want to listen to it much.

The chorus is a great part of the song, with heavier guitars and louder vocals. The lyrics are quite nice as well. The bridge is a little disappointiing, as it just sounds like the verse, although I do love the synth over the last chorus. Adds a little more music and emotion to it.

Overall, it was a good power pop song in my opinion. The soothing sound of the guitar riffs fitted nicely with the vocals, which were very strong as well.

A trunk full of dead bodies - You ain't no ninja, punk

Jumps in pretty fast. Pretty typical vocals in that it sounds like the typical "emo" style everyone's mimcking. Not bad, just very typical. Guitar and drums are mixed way below the vocals, a lot of emphasis on the vocals for sure. The vocalist screams at a few parts, I certainly didn't expect that (On second listen it's at the beginning too, oh well). There's a quick break one or two places that's pretty cool and I like it. Other than that though, it's all pretty typical and formulaic. Overall I'd have to say it's not bad, but not a lot stands out to put it above all the other acts out there either. No reason I wouldn't listen, but nothing there that makes me want to go research them more. 7/10

I hope you don't take this the wrong way Grateful, but it seems like you are suggesting an awful lot of the same bands. I'll dib anyway though

Kif 05-04-2005 10:10 AM

I meant that in most of your recommendations, you tend to pick the same bands (Butch Walker, Izzy Stradlin, Val Emmich). There's nothing wrong in using the same bands, but try and vary them out a little bit, give the reviewers something new if you get me?

Izzy Stradlin - Parasite
Nice drumroll intro, although I think it's a little long. It jumps straight into the song with a very punky sound. The guitar riffs are quite high and fast, and the drumming is amazingly quick too. I like the vocals to this song too, they sound similar to Millencolin.

Around the 0:57 point, the solo kicks in. For such a short song, the solo does drown out a bit, and even carries on into the last verse. I like that actually, it gives the song a little variation and something to listen out for over a part of the song you have already heard.

I don't really know what to say for this. It's short (1:37 to be exact), and for that amount of time it did really well to keep me hooked. But I think they could've made it longer, it left me wanting to hear more like that. I loved the style of the music, even though it didn't particularly offer anything new. Overall it's a great punk rock song. Plain and simple.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The City Never Sleeps

Well I got a flyer about these guys at the show last night so I decided to give this a listen.

Starts out very ambient, and then the dums and guiatr come in. Shortly the vocals come in. I don't like them. I don't think his voice fits the music and the screaming isn't fantastic. Very driven and high energy music. A lot of it reminds me of Thursday actually for some reason. Definitely not what I expected when I saw Pop-Punk/Indie. Really I kinda enjoyed it up to the vocals though. I can't really give a fair assessment as is because it didn't appeal to me at all, but if they got a new vocalist I definitely might like them more.

Strung Out - lucifermotorarcade

This song starts with various effects being used, then the distorted guitar and drums kicking in. The drums follow a simple beat, and mainly chords are used on this track. A secong guitar picks out the melody. Shouty vocals accompany this high energy riff. This gets pretty catchy, but the vocals really spoil this song for me. As Vince said, This song was pretty decent until the vocals started, but this really isn't my type of music, so I don't think I can be a fair judge of this song.

Gilby Clarke - Cure Me... Or Kill Me...
I like the intro a lot actually, considering it sounds similar to a Metallica song, who I despise. The guitar riffs sound like a typical hard rock song, which is good I guess. The vocals come in, and it sounds like they are trying too hard to be your average metal band. The lyrics, the riffs, the way the song is sung. It sounds quite generic to be honest.

The chorus is a lot better, it has a little pop-punk edge to it considering what the song is like. The mini solo throughout the chorus is a nice touch as well.

The verse and chorus use the same structure and chords again, and once again I've fallen in love with the chorus thanks to the lead guitarist.

The bridge is quite nice as well. The main solo is enjoyable to listen to, but I must admit I was expecting a bit more from the lead guitarist. It sounds a little slow, and it doesn't really bring anything new to the song. It just seems like a way to put off playing the chorus again.

When the chorus comes around again, it lasts way too long. At least 4 times the chorus goes round I think, which could've easily been shortened.

Overall, I didn't mind the song. It's one of those songs which focus on the guitarist rather than anything else. The vocals seemed forced into being brody in the verses, and the drumming wasn't the most impressive I've ever heard. Hell, I could probably drum like this guy in this song. The guitar was pretty good, I thought the lead guitarist spent a little too long soloing his heart out, and that little gimmick got old after a while.

The plot to blow up the Eiffel Tower - For Marcus

Starts off a bit wierd, all the instruments playing and then goes into a cool bass line and then the vocals come in, they are ok, not very strong and shouted, it sounds ok.
Then it slows down a bit, which is a nice change and then it breaks down with a strong bass line and the girl singing is good. Good guitar work through the song. Then a sax solo comes in which i don't really like, but it's wuite a nice change. Then just as the song seem s to fade out to the end of the song, all the instruments and vocals start off as crazy and fast as possible.

I didn't really liuke it that much, i wouyldn't buy it, but it's not terrible.

Lars and the Bastards - Six Foot Five

Starts out with clicks, then gets right into it. It's got a catchy rhythm. The lyrics are somewhat ballad-like, talking about punx and skinheads doing stuff. I can't understand the lyrics too well. :p About 0:43, the chorus comes in. VERY catchy. "Skinhead! Roots making rock and roll, on parole!" Something like that. Right after the chorus comes the solo. After the solo, a breakdown-type thing. Chorus again. /dances. Overall it's a pretty good song. Typical stuff from Lars, and it was kind of hard to review becuase it was pretty simple.

I give it a 7/10.
