Um....no. Seriously, are you sure you were listening to ACLOTM? Because Ben's basslines don't really have a funky sound to them at all....certainly not anywhere near as funky as Dirk's stuff on Are You In, Battlestar, and pretty much everything else pre-Make Yourself.
This isn't to take anything away from Ben...guy is a brilliant musician who I think is exactly what the band needed at this point in their careers (no way in hell do songs like Sick, Sad Little World or The Odyssey get made w/Dirk on bass). Most of his basslines on ACLOTM aren't terribly groundbreaking, but I firmly believe it's because it was his first album in the band and he was still finding his place, so to speak. Just listen to what he does live....IMO he's vastly improved the basslines to Just a Phase and Are You In, and the Drive remix is awesome as well (albeit not that complicated). The bass solos he was doing early in the past tour were just nasty. I think a lot of people write him off because he doesn't have Dirk's style and you can tell he's a former guitar player from his basslines, but that's definately not a bad thing given the direction they've been heading as a band. I've been comparing him to the bass player from the Stone Temple Pilots (one of the DeLeo bros?) for a while....very melodic and flawless in their playing of scales. So back to the original point of the thread, yeah, they rock and are severely underappreciated by the music "elitists" out there who dismiss them based soley/mostly on their radio hits, most of which happen to be among their worst songs, IMO (Wish You Were Here, Warning, Nice To Know You, Stellar). Anyone who doubts their skills needs to listen to Sick, Sad Little Word, The Odyssey, Follow, and pretty much anything off of SCIENCE or Fungus Amongus (keep in mind they were like 15 when they wrote the FA material...makes it that much more amazing). I'm really excited to see what they come up with over the next year or two. I urge everyone to check it out...between the score they're writing for a surfer documentary, a new Time-Lapse album, and their next Incubus album, I'm pretty confident their best work is still to come (and this is from someone who still believes SCIENCE is their best album to date). And if you haven't figured out by now from the length of this post, yeah, I like this band A LOT.
sorry to quote the whole thing, but i agree totally. Ironic huh? the white guy was funkier than the black guy... lol |
I like Incubus. This band goes down with about 3 or 4 others that I can say I don't think I will get tired of. I know there are others that I currently listen to, but Incubus, for example, I have been listening to for a long time and I still like them. This I can only say for, as I said, 3 or 4 other bands. They never released anything bad in my opinion, and I doubt they will anytime soon. And I doubt I will ever get tired of hearing them.
I think Morning View is one of the best albums of all time. That CD got so much play out of me. I had to get another copy because I f'ucked it up so much. And contrary to a lot of people's opinion (not so much on these forums), I think A Crow Left Of The Murder is a near perfect album as well. |
every album of they've made is well made, and seem to get better...
|
All albums come in somewhat of a progression of the last. I think Morning View was the perfect album to bridge the gap between Make Yourself and ACLOTM. The progression is mostly due to Incubus maturing, but the songwriting and musicianship, especially with the addition of Ben Kenney, has improved so much more. What can I say, they're my favorite artists.

^^^ i concur

Hey - I was the fool who was saddened by the loss of thier old bassist... After watching thier 'Alive At Red Rocks' DVD i now love thier new bassist...
I was a fool but i have now seen the light - Thank you, I just needed to say that... |
i don't think you are a fool at all... i was sorta confused... i never thought incubus would be a band to lose a member, especially one that was in the band for the first 11 years

Incusinger, where in Florida are you at? Guitar player in Tampa here...don't really know a whole lot of other musicians though. Guy I work with is supposedly a pretty good drummer, though I know he's more into punk. I'm down for jamming out from time to time....don't have a whole lot of time to get involved with a band though (that and I don't feel I'm quite good enough on guitar yet).
|
anyone heard any of Ben Kenneys solo stuff, it's very good.
heard the song Hoopdie from incubusonline.com, it's very promising stuff. might have to get his album 26. |

hoopdie... good tune, kenney's a good musician, i liked him in the roots... the vocals are kinda ben harper-esk... which is good, to me anyway...

Incubus is the only band holding everybody from going to Punk rock, I think there great, I would compare them to the foo fighters
|
i think if incubus made a "best of.." album i think it should be acoustic (not just the guitar but the whole band like in the When incubus attacks dvd)...
what do you think? wouldnt "Sick sad little world" sound sick acoustic? |

The foo fighters? Why? |

what do you think? wouldnt "Sick sad little world" sound sick acoustic?
I dont think it should be just acoustic, Incubus sounds great acoustic but if they put out a best of album (which I dont see how they could because there are too many good songs) they should make it with the original songs (not the new versions with the piano like they have been playing in concert and in their cd that comes with Alive at the Red Rocks)... It would be great if they put out like a box set with both acoustic and electric that would be sweet.. |
incubus is due for another acoustic concert. I think they should play Nice to Know You (my fav incubus song) acoustic. It would sound really good.
I haven't posted in this thread before, so I must say that Incubus is a talented band that writes great songs. Definitly the best band out there today, although not many people realize it. :thumb: |

I just bought Morning View (well yesterday).
Doesn't seem as solid and kickass as science but it's very good nonetheless :) |
Incubus write amazingly catchy yet complex songs, hence why they are one of my all time faves. I hate the way they get written off as posers because they are good looking? Jealous bunch of cunts. ACLOTM was a brilliant album in my opinion, Here In My Room is one of the best songs they have ever written.
completely agree |
I personally like rap, but I am a fan of some of the Incubus songs. I really haven't heard many but the ones I have heard I like.

Mike
The best thing about ACLOTM is that they really let mike show his skills.. I think they were holding him back from showing off some of his real skill in the past albums (with exceptions).. most of his playing in ACLOTM is crazy and mind blowing (sick sad little world, to name one).. his playing just makes the song flow and i hope in the next ablum they will really let him show more of his playing ability..:thumb:
I think they were holding him back from showing off some of his real skill in the past albums (with exceptions)
According to interviews he was kind of holding himself back. He was focusing more on just adding what the song needs as opposed to figuring out what the song needs and then expanding upon it and taking the song alot farther. |
But then again, I think the only reason people seem to think Mike was being held back prior to ACLOTM is that there are a rare few solos on Make Yourself and Morning View. On SCIENCE we had solos in Summer Romance and Deep Inside, but that's really almost been all we'd see out of him. I think what comes with the maturation of Incubus' music came less need for Mike to go out and shred, and his guitar playing ability really shines in the pieces he writes. I think he's amazingly underrated, mostly because people haven't heard tons of blistering solos by the man, but the bottom line is that he's more creative and open-minded, and that's what keeps his playing so unique. He experiments with many foreign scales, octaves. I really enjoy that about his playing. Mike doesn't seem like a guy bent on conflict, so I'm sure that if he wanted to solo, he would only do it when a song would require it and not ruin the flow the song has put forth, thus we see a couple of solos on ACLOTM (Priceless, Sick Sad Little World, a smaller one on Here In My Room).

I like every Incubus album for different reasons. I don't think it's right to shun Morning View and ACLOTM just because they're "too poppy" or they "lack solos"(though I really do miss the funk). The band more or less changes their style with every release, which I think is why they even lasted more than a decade long.
|
Kappa, I agree w/pretty much everything you said, though there's more than a couple solos on ACLOTM. The one's you noted are probably the most memorable (especially Sick, Sad Little World....one of my favorite solos of all time), but in addition to those 3, he also solos in Talk Shows, Pistola, Zee Devel, and Made for TV Movie.
I'm really glad he's expanding into this area too. Like you mentioned, he hadn't done much soloing on the past several albums. MY only had Drive and Nowhere Fast, SCIENCE only had Anti-Gravity and Deep Inside and MV didn't have any. He had a number on Fungus, though....Hilkus, Sink Beneath the Line, Psycosilocybin (several kick-*** ones, actually), and Trouble in 421. Can't wait to hear what he's got in store for the next albu, especially after hearing The Odyssey and Follow... |
