I'd say the only screaming singer who is above Labrie would be Mikael Ankerfeldt, but that's mostly because you can understand what he is saying still, it fits the music perfectly, and he can sing clean just as well...

Quebec 11-14-2004 07:01 PM

Imagine Dream theater without Labrie but with a screamer and a band like children of bodom with Labrie replacing Laiho for vocals. See the difference... Both are amazing and their singing fits perfectly their music. I think labrie is the only singer that DT could have and still be rockin... Yeah, it's Labrie or just crazy instrumental stuff!

I got Images and Words last week. sweet album but i think not as much as SFAM. thats just a work of art

RiceMonster 11-14-2004 08:12 PM

Agreed, Images and Words is excellent, but I have to say Scenes From a Memory Is most defently their best.

Kwash2 11-14-2004 08:19 PM

Am I the only person who thinks that DT should just go instrumental?

Listen to Liquid tension experiment. Its DT without Labrie and Myung and its only instrumental

Got both of the CD's.

I noticed a distinct lack of Myung.

One. Two. Three.

They also have more of a jazzy feel to their music in LTE as well...

And I love Labries voice, I don't think any one else could fit the spot for vocals in that band more then he could.

lets get some conversation going again. Whats everyone's favourite Petrucci solo? I'm going to have to go with Home, it blows me away everytime I hear it.

That's a really good one, but the Blind Faith one totally kicks my ***. And my favorite Petrucci solo of all time is the one off of "Truth" from "An Evening with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci." After he filled ToT full of absolutely ****ty needling solos, this proved to me that he hadn't lost his stuff.

RideTheSpiral 11-14-2004 08:47 PM
Dream Theater are probably still my favourite band, but to be honest after nearly 3 years of holding that No.1 spot I've kinda lost interest. There's just so much more stuff that I listen to now. Still, even though they aren't as regular on my playlist now, some songs still remain some of my favourites, in particular A Change Of Seasons, which is probably my favourite song ever.

I just realised I haven't bothered to listen to Scenes From A Memory in about 5 months, even though at one point it was my favourite album.
I was about to say that IDENTICAL thing. Omg.

Anywho DT mean more to me than any other band because they changed my life. They got me into good music and inspired me to play guitar.

:chug: rock on.

Shut up about how the TOT solos didn't suite your taste. We heard you the first time.

Stream of Counciousness is probably my favourite, then Home, Fatal Tradgedy, Endless Sacrifice, Jaws of life/IBS(From John's upcoming solo cd) and In the Name of God (Including the unison).

^Dream~Theater^ 11-14-2004 11:34 PM

does anyone else that has seen this notice the lack of petrucci on there? I mean it shows him here and there but 75% of the time, the cameras are never on him during the solo's, but it shows the other people that are barely playing anything. opinions anyone? I got Once In A Livetime/Images And Words(Live In Tokyo) in the same dvd and i must say the images dvd is most definately worth checking out. Has some of the most craziest petrucci soloing i have ever seen or heard.

The JoZ 11-14-2004 11:40 PM

What do you all think of Portnoy and Petrucci doing vocals every now and then? Specifically, on "The Glass Prison"? Some people have told me Portnoy's singing was 'laughable' but I actually quite enjoy it. And until I got a live video of them playing TGP, I had no idea he was doing the singing in the beginning, I always thought they had just done something in the studio with LaBrie's voice...

bball_1523 11-14-2004 11:41 PM

I don't know why, but whenever I hear any petrucci solo, it's always alternate picking. Does he have any other variety? I've bearly heard him sweep, bearly hear him playing mind-boggling arps, bearly hear him doing tapping stuff...

Hey I think he's one of the fastest alternate pickers out there, but I find his solos a bit boring honestly. Shed some light on me DT fans, I wanna hear some more petrucci solos that have more variety then what I've heard in "images and words, awake, and SFAM."

Beyond this life - Sweeping in the solo

Once again, all you crazy defensive fans out there... take a chill pill. If you're so brittle that you'll snap at the slightest criticism, I'm afraid you can shut up and go soak your head in a bucket of ice water. Either that or you can feel free to debate with me about ToT and maybe try and modify my opinion a little bit, or maybe explain to me why it is you think that the solos on ToT are heads and shoulders above everything he's ever done. Short of that, I would appreciate it if you gave me a break. I am a huge DT fan. I have Dream Theater's entire discography save "When Dreams and Day Unite," and ToT is the first album I've disliked. In that post, I was referencing my dislike of that album not because I wanted to piss people off, but as a way to explain why the solo I cited ("Truth" from "An Evening With..."etc.) had such a huge impact on me. It calmed my ToT-caused fear that DT had lost the capability to make that sort of ethereal music that I love. I may have chosen my words a bit carelessly and harshly. I apologize. But, in all honesty, there is absolutely no call for you to be so hotheaded. If you want me to shut up, don't tell me to shut up. Instead, make me. :thumb:

You want some cool tapping, check out the "Blind Faith" solo from Six Degrees. A good example of his arpeggio stuff is on "Under a Glass Moon" off "Images." And pick up that "An Evening With..." etc. album I cited earlier. It's sheer genius. Just absolute genius. You'll hear all the amazing Petrucci you'll ever need.

Push the Envelope 11-15-2004 02:12 AM

Have many of you heard Ayreon's album The Human Equation it features James on vocals along with a range of other vocalists such as Mikael from Opeth, Devvy, etcetc. I ****ing love the CD.

I've heard it. It's pretty good, wildly overproduced...but I like that in my music. :thumb: Personally as far as vocalists go, I will take Mikael over James any day. But what I heard I mostly liked. All Music Guide really hyped them up, though, so to be honest I was expecting a bit more brilliance. On the other hand, it's possible I just wasn't hearing the right stuff. Suggestions?

The solo in "lie"! It blows my mind all the time!!

RiceMonster 11-15-2004 06:06 PM

^^^ that solo is excellent, one of my favourites.

Sugar Chestnut 11-15-2004 06:09 PM

I only heard of them very recently from someone from this site. I bought their ?latest?, Train of Thought... I love it... very long songs but they somehow hold my attention cuz theyre amazing. But im wondering if buying their latest album was horribly wrong of me and if their others are tons more amazing than train of though. What else is good?

BludgeonySteve 11-15-2004 06:10 PM

My friend let me borrow Scenes From New York the DVD. It's almost flawless :)

Legato technique - the start of the Lie solo and the unison on In The Name Of God
Tapping - This Dying Soul's first solo and, again, the Lie solo
Sweeps - errr, Endless Sacrifice, In The Name Of God, Under A Glass Moon
