I just ordered Unkle's Psyence Fiction and Tricky's Masinquaye (or whatever)

Christopher Walken's #1 Fan 11-29-2004 09:33 PM

I'm trying to get a classmate into trip-hop. What should I put on the Mix CD?

Christopher Walken's #1 Fan 11-29-2004 09:35 PM

So far I have Risingson, Teardrop, Exchange and Angel by MA
and Sour Times, Mysterons, Biscuit and Pedestal by Portishead.

Iai 11-30-2004 06:59 AM
When will you be doing that, because I want to do one as well :D
My FG is gonna take a while (you'll see why). Feel free to do one in the interim. Mine'll probably be another week at least.

Get rid of Exchange and put Protection.

Add Radiohead's Talk Show Host. Then some Lamb, Tricky, Sneaker Pimps (Six Underground, I'd say), and throw in some Buck 65 just in case. Oh, and DJ Shadow is a must.

LordDargon 11-30-2004 07:46 AM

When are you guys going to do one of these on Experimental Hyper Ultra Brutal Death Metal?

Iai 11-30-2004 02:23 PM

Why don't you do one?

manuscriptreplica 12-01-2004 02:03 AM

So you can do technical death metal in this forum?

Zing

Happymeal 12-01-2004 06:16 AM

Is Protection underrated? I don't see it mentioned very often here, and me peeps back home seem to like it more than Mezzanine.

talk show host 12-01-2004 08:32 AM

There are some great songs on Protection like 'Karmacoma' and 'Eurochild' but I don't think it's on a par with Mezzanine or Blue Lines as a whole.

Iai 12-02-2004 09:50 AM

Tricky - Black Steel, You Don't Wanna
Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground
Buck 65 - 463, The Centaur
DJ Shadow - Stem/Long Stem

Lamb, I ain't that big on.

Try Morcheeba - World Looking In, too.

Happymeal 12-03-2004 06:04 AM

Lamb - Gorecki

On the subject of Sneaker Pimps;
Becoming X is NOT the definitive, nor even representitive album. It features Kelli on vocals. Kelli was only on the one album, and that was the worst they have released, being like a sub-par Massive Attack. Splinter, their 1999 album features guitarist Chris Corner on vocals, as does 2003's Bloodsport. Both of these are a better standard and more original than Becoming X (quick guide; Becoming X = female vocals, Splinter & Bloodsport = not).

Also, check out Chris's solo album, IAMX - Kiss & Swallow ( www.iamx.co.uk ).
It's sleazy, dirty trip-hop-ish electro stuff, and top quality.

First post. Hello.

I disagree. Kelli's vocals are great, and the band miss them on later efforts. Splinter is definitely worth having, mind. I wasn't too keen on Bloodsport. Though it's a while since I heard either of the last two - I only have them on tape.

They claim to be trip-hop, but I want one of you guys to verify since I haved heard any trip-hop before.

Det_Nosnip 03-10-2005 04:32 AM

Would some of the later stuff by the Gathering be considered trip-hoppish?

For example:

Click on the "Even the Spirits Are Afraid" video (2nd link, with picture of Anneke).

Iai 03-10-2005 06:19 AM

^I'd class Saturnine as trip-hop.

I'll check out the MySpace thing when I get home.

Det_Nosnip 03-10-2005 02:31 PM

Saturnine? Really...that song seemed a bit too rock orientated, what with the distorted guitars and everything. There are alot of samples and electronic sounds, though I suppose. I think the group's been labeled "trip-rock," which would make sense.

Iai 03-10-2005 02:38 PM

I got Saturnine because it was described to me as trip-hop. I didn't see a reason to argue with that after I heard it.

I just mentioned it because it was the first thing to come to mind with The Gathering. My version of IfThenElse got deleted. :(

Det_Nosnip 03-10-2005 05:16 PM

Aaaah! That's terrible, that's such an incredible album...if you need me to send it to you, I can.

Iai 03-10-2005 05:24 PM

I'm getting a new hard-drive soon. The one I have now is on its last legs.....it just gives up when a certain amount of space is taken up, so I'm not putting any music on i for fear of losing college work.

When I get my new hard-drive I'm gonna get it again. Unless I find it on sale before then.

Deathapalooza04 03-11-2005 12:37 AM

Lately I've been listening to Subway Series by Ming + Fs. It's slowly growing on me.

Some other good groups/albums:

Thievery Corporation - Mirror Conspiracy
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions
RjD2 - Deadringer (might be a little on the hip-hop side of trip-hop, good stuff though)

coolschmool 03-11-2005 10:59 AM

Massive Attack and Dj Shadow rock my socks.

Good thread!

Mmm Digital 02-27-2006 06:42 AM

Lamb RULE ALL ! - Lamb are one of my favourite bands of all time i think they are truely amazing!

Would anyone consider Bjork trip hop? Personally I would - her stuff has the range and chilled outness of the genre i think :-)
