Congratulations.

Riva, why aren't you on MSN?

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:17 AM

Good morning gentlemen. Whats happening?

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:19 AM

I'm still struggling on with this essay. I've done rather ridiculously little work on it so far, considering how long I've spent doing it. What are you up to?

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:23 AM

Is this the same essay you were talking about like 3 days ago? I'm at work as always, not doing anything.

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:33 AM

Nope, this'll be a different essay. Last night, I did two essays, which were in for what is now yesterday. Now I'm doing the third, which is in for what is now today.

It's taking so much longer, though, because it's much more difficult (for me) than either of them was.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:37 AM

Yeah I don't miss school at all. What class would we be dealing with here? If its:
TOBACCO THEORY 101
CONTEMPORARY ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION or
GUITAR SKILLS PROCRASTINATION

Then I can help you out quite a bit.

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:38 AM

Sadly, it's Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion. Should Abraham be admired? is the question. Thanks for the offer, though.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:43 AM

Ouch, I see where that can hurt. Abraham, what was his deal again, something with his sons? By the way, do have any way giving back neg rep received, cause I got neg repped over a harmless joke.
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6231149#post6231149

Post 4995. He neg repped me for saying that. I mean come on, have a sense of humor ehh?

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:50 AM

It wasn't Lord Abortion who neg repped you for it (I just checked), but I won't say who did. I don't think it's fair. They shouldn't really have done so though, no.

Abraham was the father of faith, and also the father of Isaac. God told him to take Isaac to the top of a mountain in Moriah and kill him, as an offering to God. Abraham took him there, and got so far as drawing the knife in preparation, before God, via an angel, told him he didn't really have to kill him, and provided a lamb for sacrifice instead. And, with reference to Kierkegaard and Kant, I have to discuss whether Abraham is admirable.

It's a 1,500 word essay too, which is annoying, even though it's not particularly long. 1,000 words I can deal with; it's a little short, so you have to condense your points and such, but I can usually manage it fine. But a 1,500 word essay is annoying, because it means you can't just do 1,000, but the extra 500 doesn't give you enough leeway to really expand on what you would have done for the 1,000. Stupid essays.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:54 AM

I'd say he difinitley is. I mean, his faith was so strong that he was willing to kill his own son for God.

Bartender 01-13-2005 01:00 AM

That's (vaguely) what Kierkegaard thinks. But from the point of view of morality and ethics (and Kant), Abraham is just a murderer.

Think about it; many priests extol the greatness of Abraham's actions (hence, the father of faith) in sermons and such, because he was strong enough not to shy away or deny the task set to him, depsite the difficulty it brings, because it was set him by God. But imagine what, for example, those same priests would think if they caught wind that a member of their own congregation was planning to follow Abraham's example. As Kierkegaard put it, the preacher "perhaps would go to the man, he would muster all his ecclesiastical dignity and shout "You despicable man, you scum of society, what devil has so possessed you that you want to kill your own son?"

And so, it is debated.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 01:06 AM

Ah, interesting. I didn't think of it that way. He wants to please God, but at the same time is committing a horrible sin of murder. The question is definitley raised. Well, obviously you have to present both sides of the issue, but if it were me, I'd kill him. And I say that with truth. By the way, where is everyone? If people don't start posting a bit, it's going to be a long night.

Bartender 01-13-2005 01:20 AM

I've no idea. It's getting to the point where no one is online. 7:18am for me, so it's mostly too early for people where I am and in Europe, and it's mostly getting too late for people in America, both East and West. It's coming up on 5pm in Australia, so they should all be starting to come on in the next few hours.

I would post more about this Abraham thing, but I suddenly realised I'd rather be typing it into my essay, than onto MX.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 01:24 AM

Yeah I was gonna say, with all this time your taking telling me about you could be knocking it out. Well, I'll leave you to it, hopefully some people will trickle in here.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-13-2005 01:51 AM

Well, just got home from the Slipknot concert and i must say, WOW, they did a very good job. Unearth couldnt really get the crowd into it but one of the guitarist's did a very nice sweeping solo with his guitar behind his head. Killswitch played a solid set and as soon as Rose Of Sharyn hit, thats when the pit erupted. Slipknot comes on, Needless to say, the pit never died once during their whole set and only got more intense as it went. Corey also stopped in the middle of Spit It Out to do his "I want everybody on the floor and no one rises till i say Jump the **** up". I got elbowed very nice in the side of the eye, got leveled numerous occasions and got my glasses broken, but it was well worth it :thumb:

ArcLite 01-13-2005 01:55 AM

Sounds like a hell of time. Wish I could see Killswitch sometime. Saw the Knot at Ozzfest and yeah, it got crazy. I escaped without injury though.

BoboTheRagingHobo 01-13-2005 04:12 AM

I saw Slipknot earlier this summer...it was alright. They put on the same show that they did on the DVD pretty much though...

But Slayer blew them away, even though they got on first heh.

Any one still around?

Bartender 01-13-2005 04:24 AM

I'm here. Essay's done, I'm just relaxing for a bit (singing along to untr00 songs) before going in to hand it in. I think I'll go look for some CDs to buy afterwards too, as a reward for actually getting them all done in time.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 04:25 AM

I'm here for 3 more hours. Glad you got that essay done.

BoboTheRagingHobo 01-13-2005 04:27 AM

You buy alot of cd's heh, got alot of cash aye?

I am bored. so I think I am going to continue watching Naruto...

Bartender 01-13-2005 04:28 AM

This specific money is Christmas money to waste :) My New Year's Resolution is to try and buy more CDs this semester than I did last semester.

cj - thanks.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 04:31 AM

I have a severe CD buying addiction, kills my finances. But I need to buy my Ensiferum CD's this week. So much money, but so much enjoyment. Saving isn't any fun.

Bartender 01-13-2005 04:33 AM

Yeah, saving is pointless. I'm 19. What do I need to save for?

Jondur 01-13-2005 04:41 AM

Don't even go there. If I'd had a bit more sense at your age I wouldn't be struggling so much now.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 04:44 AM

What is Baphomet?

Jondur 01-13-2005 04:47 AM

And yes I know I sound like your dad.

Bartender 01-13-2005 04:49 AM

Well you're not quite that old. Anyway, I know it's a bad attitude to take, I just can't bring myself not to justify my buying more music.

Bartender 01-13-2005 05:08 AM
What is Baphomet?
Where's Legions when you need him?

I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. Depending on your source and such, it could just be this thing in my avatar, or it could be a goat-headed deity. I think it was worshipped by the St John's Templars at some point, for which they were excommunicated and persecuted. Or something like that, anyway. Like I say, others seem to have a crystal clear understanding of everything it is, which I don't.
Wow, some one asked if Judas Priest was death metal in the death heads thread...

At least he didn't pretend to be a death head, like that other poseur that came in with all his metalcore crap.

EDIT: Yeah, Baphomet is some sort of demonic goat thing. I think the cover of Behemoth's Zos Kia Cultus is supposed to represent that?

You know what is a pain in the ass?

Redoing over 100 lines of Pascal programming because of forgetting the 0 in front of the decimal :upset:

edit: Correction, 300 lines :/

shortass 01-13-2005 11:42 AM

I will tell you what is even more of a pain in the ass. That I changed my computers password and then forgot what it is. :upset:
