That's one, not 4.
I'd put Steven Wilson before him. |
Is it just me or is the ending of In Mist She Was Standing one of the most BEAUTIFUL pieces of music ever created??
I love it! Among my favorite parts to an Opeth song. It's partially one of the reasons why Orchid snuck up to #2 on my list for a while. And because of Silhouette, and The Twilight is my Robes, and The Apostle in Triumph. Where's the Orchid loving :( Reveries smeveries hey guess what nobody cares! |
I'd put Steven Wilson before him.
I certainly wouldn't. Steve's pretty good, but I like Akerfeldt a LOT more. I find Steve's tone gets a little annoying/bland at times. He's better as a producer. :thumb: |

Say whhhaaaat? Wilson's melodic singing is way above Akerfeldt's. |
You're okay in my book. :thumb: I won't rant on Orchid, I'll just drink to that! :chug: :chug: ''Through the eternal flame I travel, as the rain keeps falling...'' |
Orchid is my favorite Opeth record.

I respect you so much. Ever since this thread was started, you've always kept it real. Orchid is indeed one of my favorite albums ever recorded in any genre. |

Thank you. My favorite song is on Orchid too, The Forest of October. |
Thank you.
My favorite song is on Orchid too, The Forest of October.
God I love that song, seriously...the mood on Orchid cannot be topped. IDGAF. I can't decide which I like most, Orchid or Morningrise. As soon as I come to a conclusion, I always question myself a few weeks later  I can't decide! I guess it all depends on what season it is, and what my brain pattern decides at that particular moment. N.P. Under The Weeping Moon. |
Maybe this is old news, but in sputnik.com( MX'S cd review site), Opeth isn't in the metal section anymore, they are now under the rock section.
That is weird. |

Roadrunner has a bunch of top 10 lists from TV/Radio hosts, and other bands and what not. Ghost Reveries is in atleast half of them...good stuff

No, it was pretty much the standard almost-impossible-to-classify Opeth album. I'd definetly not call any album prog rock except Damnation. If you can only put them in one reasonable genre, I would make them Metal or Progressive Metal. |
 I call them progressive metal to, it's just that Ghost Reveries was really soft compared to the others. Still metal, but just not as heavy as the other albums.
|
The main thing is that Opeth is more progressive than death metal. I do agree with this, and since there's no "prog metal" genre on Sputnik, Opeth go under "Progressive".
I'd say GR was as heavy as their other releases, but there was more clean singing.. so I guess an argument could be made for both sides. |
I would just say Opeth is melodic deathmetal.
|
I'd say GR was as heavy as their other releases
.... Really? As heavy as Deliverance? My Arms, Your Hearse? Blackwater Park? |
Without a doubt. Sure, there are more soft songs, but the album has such a dark feeling around it that the heavy parts seem so much heavier.
|
I think we've had this discussion, and we established that a dark atmosphere doesn't add to heaviness. And albums like Deliverance and MAYH or even Still Life are waaaaaaay darker then GR.
|
I don't know what to tell you. I think it's as heavy as all of Opeth's other releases. I think atmosphere does add to heaviness, just for the record. Otherwise, a lot of Nine Inch Nails could be considered very "light" (for lack of a better word).

It just seems the guitars don't have that heavy crunch they once did, they sound very soft and lightly distorted. And the drumming doesn't seem as aggressive. |
I think he deserves it. He has a lot of range.
His range is like 2 octaves, almost average. The only thing I really like about his voice is his death growl, otherwise not really that talented voice wise. Don't get me wrong I love Opeth and I think Mikael has a good emotional quality to his clean voice but I don't think it's praiseworthy. |

Then you have that god like growl. Which is what I put more emphesis on. |

Moses... its happening again.. you killed the thread.. :p
|
I think Mikael has an excellent range. .. . . Of voices, it seems to me that he has the abillity to sound very different for different songs.. Mostly heard on Ghost Reveries where he changed his singing voice around on a couple of songs
|
His voice has insane range, I can only say that about him. He's very talented and it will be a long time before anyone poses a threat on him.
300 pages woo! |
I think of that it is the singer whose Mikael is very good. Does Opeth why obtain such many comparisons in the wood of the porcupine? I those presume that it is both progressive. As for me you were disappointed with Absentia with ". "
