Opeth - The Leper Affinity

We entered Winter once again
Naked, freezing from my breath
Neath the lid all limbs tucked away
This coffin is your abode from now
and onwards
Your body is mine to avail
Such a tragic sight you are
Slave under my creed
Spurring me with those tears
I am beyond death
Midst a dreaming affinity
Saving strength now, faint whispers
Come erotic communion in its splendour
Fever mirrored ghosts
Night time consolation, cross the line
Draw murder into art
Sleep inside through days
In the wake of this relief
Shivering, longing for more
Insanity at it's peak
Love me to my death
Lost are days of Spring
You sighted and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin
Your gaze covered with virgin snow
Rigid features
It's the shallow deeds who is to blame
Deafening shrieks pierced the night
A step from oblivion
Moving into the dim lights
Hiding within a reverie
It was worth it for the wait alone

My Interpretation:

This, to me, is nature or the earth itself speaking. The "breath" of the land is the wind, freezing the ground and all below it. The earth now avails, or uses, the body to its own advantage. The soil itself is nurtured by the corpse, and the decomposition causes the body to return to nature - dust to dust, you know? These lines seem to fit that: "Grew together with your skin, and paced the trails of sin. Your gaze covered with virgin snow; rigid features."

All that suggests somebody dead and buried under the cold winter earth. Yeah, I can see it being a metaphor for human failings - it could even be an analogy for a controlling or smothering relationship, in a sick sort of way. But in a literal sense, I believe it's about death and the eternity of burial.

Sorry for the BRI bullshit.....this is the last one for me today guys.

I've heard of Opeth for months, but I just really sit down and listen to their song last night...
I am not a fan of death metal, but they are just...different...I don't know, but they are amazing!

pyroseraphin 12-17-2005 08:37 PM

Serenity Painted Death can be shut off suddenly in the edge. Does this the album of elses happen anyone?

Deth 12-17-2005 08:39 PM

It's on all the albums.

I think the reason is just to add to the effect that the main character was suddenly snatched and taken to the gallows.

Progressive Death Metal my friend.... MUCH better than death....

I wish someone would do a song-by-song breakdown of MAYH, whose concept and story are a lot less clear than those of Still Life (which I just got today, I had to order it from Amazon, but I paid a lot less for it than I would have in a store....and it has some sweet album art!).

The early, Orchid and Morningrise songs would be cool to analyze too.

So who else is wondering about all the gay jokes Mike keeps making at shows? What if GR is a concept album about butt sex and other gay things?

Jeff is not a wanker.

And no, Opeth doesn't have any wank solos, because they don't know how/can't wank.

Sebek 12-17-2005 11:38 PM

I'm in the process of listening to Blackwater Park, Deliverance and My Arms, Your Hearse right now; back to back. I like them more than I had previously thought, good stuff.

RouteOne 12-17-2005 11:40 PM

I hope they do another "soft" album again like damnation. I really like their more mellow stuff.

Uber. Mikael looks like such a jolly old guy without his beard.

I can't decide whether to go see Opeth or Cryptopsy! They're apparently coming here in the same month and I can only go see one. GRRR.

They won't, Mikeal said he wanted to keep Damnation special.
I wish someone would do a song-by-song breakdown of MAYH, whose concept and story are a lot less clear than those of Still Life
I just did this but MX decided to tell me I followed an invalid link. wtf?
I'll have it up in fifteen.

Here's my interpretation of MAYH.

Prologue - It is a funeral scene on a cold rainy spring day. The narrator's love is among the mourners and she is distraught, clinging to old memories. The narrator can only admire her beauty, having death all around him and around his neck. Death is his 'albatross' (Samuel Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner).

April Ethereal - It is the time immediately after the funeral, sometime in April which has become unworldly to them both. The girl sees the narrator everywhere she looks, even in his mirror and remembers him all the time.
The ghost cannot physically touch her and must move on to the world of the dead to outrun the scythe, which is in his case, his inability to be with his love. The girl asks him to take her away in her feverish grieving state.

When - The narrator goes on to the land of the dead, which is full of others like him who have no sympathy for his lost love. It is a cold dead place. Though his love still says his name, time has passed and she is no longer deeply grieving. She probably promised him undying love, but he sees that death has taken its toll on her love. He wonders when he can ever be with her.

Madrigal - The narrator is waiting for her to die as well, to keep her word and kill herself. He is frustrated by his corporeal nature and even thinks she might be evil for living on. He knows that she still idolizes him and his memory. He is forced to watch her retreat unto herself and into the Amen Corner

The Amen Corner - It is now autumn. The lover retreats into her shell and turns to prayer and religion for consolation now that he is gone. He despises religion and believes she has no right to false consolation and that only his return will change things and show her that he is not truly gone. But his return will not be easy. Her night (evil, death, Satan etc) are his day and the only things he now knows for he is the Demon of the fall.

Demon Of The Fall- He returns physically to redeem his love. She carries a dagger to either keep suitors at bay or to kill herself like planned. But she could not see through to him on arrival, showing him that it was not pure love. She only sees him for a terrified moment and flees, leaving her perfume lingering in the air. He loses all faith in her.

Credence - She begins to think she is delusional, having seen him once again in his new form. Her cold words spoken to herself to convince herself that it was all a vision show him the reality of the situation and death's victory over him. He no longer feels the passion burn within him. He now knows that as a ghost, he has no chance of reclaiming her. He attributes it to his past wicked karma.

Karma - He leaves the home where he no longer feels he belongs and goes to the forest where he becomes a shade of the forest, having nothing to gain or lose there unlike in her house where he did. He accepts his fate.

Epilogue - He figures out the meaning of 'death'. He understands that death is his only reality and his only redemption is the fond memories of the living. He begins to appreciate what it was that he had in life and the beauty of what he had without being nostalgic. He is no longer weighed down by his 'albatross'

The covers can be incorporated into the story and help understand it better. The karma spoken about in the album is probably due to his being a brave strong warrior, possibly a tyrant himself that fell unnoticed (Celtic Frost - Circle of tyrants) and his return from hell/fire, the lies he must tell himself and his loneliness despite his awesome power explored in Iron Maiden's Remember tomorrow.

There, that's it. Hope it helped.

Oh but it is. I'll probably end up seeing Opeth, seeing as Cryptopsy don't have a major label backing them so will probably be in an over 18 venue. Opeth just don't have the energy that Cryptopsy has. Ah well, Opeth will own anyways. Just gotta get someway to get there and back (I couldn't go see Electric Wizard because I didn't have a place to stay... grr).
I'd say they sing more about folk/pagan things.
Huh?

TojesDolan 12-18-2005 03:09 AM

I've been reading the lyrics of "ghost reveries" and I see it kinda repeats key elements here and there (the hounds and the baying, plus beneath the mire, and those kind of connections)...

I may give this stuff a try... Yeah. I'll try.
So who else is wondering about all the gay jokes Mike keeps making at shows? What if GR is a concept album about butt sex and other gay things?
hehe. Unlikely. Unless Satan is into teh butt plugs.

Anyways, How bout them tabsites going down .

Also, I heard theres like a special edition of ghost reveries. true?

Oh, totally. Satan is all about the un-Christian-like things like staying up late, listening to rock music, and sodomizing goats.

I don't know. Sodomizing animals is so KFC.
Axenrot was friggin horrible in Montreal! He wouldn't stop missing cymbal hits, wouldn't stop playing wrong toms... couldn't even play at the right speed... That really disapointed me!
Well yeah, of course he screwed up a few times, he came on to fills some quick but he always caught himself. I still give him mad props though, Lopez's spot is hard to fill and hes got that natural latin beat in him.

everyone should go vote for mikael in the r&m vocalists thread :naughty:.

unfortunately i've only seen opeth live once.... and it was with the sounds of the underground, so they only had a 30 minute set. i had an they came by through here on a headliner recently, but alas, i was unable to go.

should be getting lamentations for xmas...

Kaiwaz 12-18-2005 12:38 PM

I've seen them live once and it was definately the best concert I've ever been to. It was Devildriver, Moonspell and Opeth.

Det_Nosnip 12-18-2005 02:16 PM

Ugh. Devildriver annoyed the crap out of me at SOTU. God, I hate circle pits...

ok lateralus 12-18-2005 03:08 PM

Is it just me or is the ending of In Mist She Was Standing one of the most BEAUTIFUL pieces of music ever created?? It may sound ridiculous but Id say its up there with Bach and all the other classics. You have to recognize and appreciate how genius that song and especially the ending is. Amazing.
