I also like people who pee pee their panties.

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 05:05 PM

sometimes I feel like what tojes says has more meaning than what we all may think

masscows 04-17-2008 05:06 PM

His english teacher probably taught him incorrectly more likely

Riva 04-17-2008 05:07 PM
it would be nicer if authors would just build up stuff like that through foreshadowing or other similar devices

then it wouldn't be like "ok that was ****ing retarded they should all be dead"
Yeah, if more authors planned out their storylines in advance or weren't so attached to their own precious prose I think we'd see a lot more sensible situations in novels. If it only happens once in a book I don't really mind it, it makes for a bit of suspense and epic-ness.

One bloke who's sort of dodging the line of "not quite deus ex machinae but pretty close" is Matthew Reilly, but his novels kick arse anyway.

TojesDolan 04-17-2008 05:07 PM

There's no hidden meaning. All you see is all you getogetoget.

RetiredAt21 04-17-2008 05:16 PM

Smallpox was eliminated in my household in the early 1900s.

lol Star Wars FTW!

McP3000 04-17-2008 05:24 PM

but that was epic and made sense

there was no entirely random or unrelated event

Riva 04-17-2008 05:24 PM

I just hate how George Lucas' shitty imagination for names is seen as really special by the fans.

"Oooooh, Darth Maul's name refers to his close combat style of fighting"
"Oooooh, Darth Tyrannus is so clever cos he's a tyrant, get it?"
"Oooooh, Darth Sidious, cos he's insidious, right?"

Actually you'll hear a lot of fans criticize the prequels, its like Weezer fans. :thumb:

Rightfully so, the man is a genius in spite of the fact that he sucks at naming characters.
Actually you'll hear a lot of fans criticize the prequels
guilty as charged

Deth 04-17-2008 05:32 PM

I'm one of the biggest Star Wars nerds you'll find, but Lucas is a dick.

I don't care about the naming, subtlety isn't exactly sci-fi's strong suit for the most part.

Dimmu Burger 04-17-2008 05:33 PM

I'll admit. My friends and I drove from Maryland to Indianapolis to go to the official Star Wars Celebration they had there.

rasputin 04-17-2008 05:33 PM

Yeah, I'm willing to support anybody who can command a following of hordes of brainwashed individuals. They've obviously done something right.

A genius of marketing and product promotion, not really of storytelling. It's a good and rousing story, but it's not amazing. If it had been a series of books it could have flopped, but he was lucky enough to have a talented team of special effects artists and actors who managed to make his simply good story become 3 great movies.

Like you said: Product promotion. He made most of his money from action figures and various other products.

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 05:36 PM

he created one of the most compelling universes of the modern age, regardless of whether the plot itself was good, which is what has made Star Wars special to so many people I think.

rasputin 04-17-2008 05:36 PM
Support or respect? lol
Well yeah, respect also, but I meant support in the way if people say crap I'd be like nah he's pretty cool, and I am a Star Wars fan so I guess I support him in that way too.

It isn't so much the fact that his films are deep so much as the fact that they're very entertaining and engaging. I get filled with child-like excitement watching episodes IV, V and VI.
