Tyr 04-17-2008 02:13 PM

You clearly haven't read enough Douglas Adams, Brian.

gmoneyguy 04-17-2008 02:14 PM

clearly not

Tyr 04-17-2008 02:14 PM

What a pity. You should remedy this at once.

gmoneyguy 04-17-2008 02:21 PM

Suggestions?

Tyr 04-17-2008 02:23 PM

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Then just read the rest of the books in the series.

Shattered_Future 04-17-2008 02:41 PM

I should really read that book, considering I'm a huge fan of sci-fi.

The movie sucked, but then again, I probably shouldn't base the book on the movie.

Sorry, but no. He's a science fiction writer.

gmoneyguy 04-17-2008 02:44 PM

:(. I don't like science fiction.

I've been reading a lot more fantasy lately though.

Tyr 04-17-2008 02:47 PM

I haven't been reading anything except stuff for uni lately.

I need to read Dune. I'll probably give it a shot over the summer given the obscene amount of time I'll have to fill.

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 03:11 PM

The Dune books ended up getting really ridiculous.

Deth 04-17-2008 03:13 PM

The stuff his son wrote or earlier than that?

My dad was a huge fan, so I'll be able to find the majority of the stuff around the house.

gmoneyguy 04-17-2008 03:13 PM

My dad has interest in work, and thats about it.

Tyr 04-17-2008 03:16 PM

For me, Dune seems to lack something. It's a world with a lot of thought put into it, but I just didn't get caught up in it.

Kage 04-17-2008 03:23 PM

Dune = no Dune

repcak 04-17-2008 03:34 PM

I saw dune last week or so... great film :)

Deth 04-17-2008 03:42 PM

We also have the incredibly long Dune mini-series that the Sci-Fi channel aired quite a time back which is supposed to be amazing.

:(

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 03:44 PM

Its better than that really long movie that got put out a long time ago.

The concept of the book is good but some of the deus ex machinae crap is retarded

Riva 04-17-2008 04:57 PM

I think every Sci-Fi or Fantasy author employs a deus ex machina more than they should. It does make for snappier storytelling, though.

masscows 04-17-2008 04:58 PM

If by snappier you mean worse...

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 04:58 PM

There were like twenty in Dune though

TojesDolan 04-17-2008 05:00 PM

i like darkly dreaming dexter

Riva 04-17-2008 05:01 PM
If by snappier you mean worse...
No, snappier as in faster-paced. Instead of a convoluted scheme to get out of their own impossible situation, the author just sends in an archangel/dragon/mythic host/scary magical whatever. Though a lot of fantasy writers (Robert Jordan, anyone?) tend to get very wordy.

Iluvatar 04-17-2008 05:02 PM

it would be nicer if authors would just build up stuff like that through foreshadowing or other similar devices

then it wouldn't be like "ok that was ****ing retarded they should all be dead"

masscows 04-17-2008 05:03 PM

I feel like it's a cop out most of the time
