eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 09:44 PM

He's not an amazing singer, more of a guitarist. I think his vocals are good, they fit the band well and don't dominate the songs.

PsychoticFlubber 01-21-2006 09:45 PM
I got Follow The Reaper.... I thought it was average. The riffage I found pretty bad but the guitar and keyboard solo's kept me into it. I've heard some tracks off HateCrewDeathroll that are like some of my 100 favorite songs of all time and I'm a little intrigued...

But man, they should really tell Alexi to get off the mike.
No way, man. People who I think should be kicked off vocal job are people like Fred Durst. As you can see, Bodom has many fans, who all LOVE Alexi like a god. So, don't bust out anything about the members. We love Alexi at vocals, even when others think he sucks.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 09:48 PM

Well yes I'd rather have him than Fred Durst... But compared Hansi Kursch, Jeff Corpsegrinder, Nergal, Dead, John Peitibone, Angelripper, Vincent Crowley, David vincent, Rex Tucker and most extreme metal singers... he's pretty bad.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 09:49 PM

Who cares? I think his vocals are pretty good, and CoB isn't exactly dominated by the vocals. The Keyboard and Guitar solo parts make up most of their songs so I don't see why people make such a big deal over the vocals.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 09:50 PM

Also, it takes a hell of a lot of skill to solo and sing at the same time. Try playing the Kissing the Shadows chorus and singing it at the same time.

King_Of_Terrors 01-21-2006 09:52 PM

Alexi's vocals are superb. Great screams, he's very talented.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 09:53 PM

I recognize this, but still I find Bill Steer a much better vocalist than Alexi who can do just as much. And I don't even like Carcass' vocals that much.
And Carcass makes far better riffs than COB.

Alexi is a monster guitarist, but in terms of songwriting riffage, and vocals, I could reaally care less.

King_Of_Terrors 01-21-2006 09:54 PM

That's nice. If you care less, then leave.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 09:54 PM

You can't be serious if you're saying that CoB don't have good riffs. Listen to any song off Follow the Reaper and tell me there aren't good riffs there.
I actually think that music theory can hinder your creativity. If you know the "rules" too well, you start to think only in those terms, and your own writing can become stagnant and uninspired. I've heard many, many songs that don't follow conventional rules associated with theory at all, but they find their own feel and convey something that someone well-educated in music theory could not. That's partly why I think that very few successful artists know theory.
This is completely false.

Those songs that don't seem to follow conventional theory rules actually follow some theoretical construct...You're probably just not aware of it.

While most successful pop artists might not know theory...They are also not the ones composing either ;)

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 09:55 PM

FOLLOW THE REAPER? Some of the worst riffage I've ever heard (save Hate me and the title track). The only thing that kept me into that album was the keyboard and guitar solos.

From my experience, most COB fans even mark that album as a disapointment.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 09:57 PM

XD man. Hate Me would probably be the worst song on that album imo, the songs all have great riffage. The solos are crazy too, I'm with you on that, I love the ending to Kissing the Shadows.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 09:58 PM

Well thats your opinion, but certainly not the bands. I believe thy chose Hate Me as the single.

PsychoticFlubber 01-21-2006 09:58 PM

Whatever you say... you just don't seem to follow our basic interests. But oh well, and the only singer I knew of yours up there was Corpsegrinder... he is a god. But, Glen Benton of Deicide is absolutely sick...

Nope, most of the people I know who like CoB say Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder are their favourites. It's my fav anyway, but all the albums are good.

What? How can you hate the riffage and like the rest?
he's very talented.
Far, far from it, Vocal wise.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 10:01 PM

Oh man, you have to hear Bentons work with Vital Remains. That I think was the best Death metal albums of 2003 (Dechristianize).

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 10:02 PM
What? How can you hate the riffage and like the rest?
The same reason why I listen to Black Label Society. The solo's are pretty damn nice, but thats about it.

I've never liked Zakks solos. Nothing but wankage to me, but each to their own.

King_Of_Terrors 01-21-2006 10:04 PM

Porcupine ****er:

Dude go read the rules, your making like constant double posts.
I've never liked Zakks solos. Nothing but wankage to me, but each to their own.
SuperTerrorizer. It's his best solo but I mean... he plays very similar solo's. He always chicken picks away towards similar pentatonic scales. It gets a little redundant. But that right there is proof of his skill.
Porcupine ****er:

Is this better?

PsychoticFlubber 01-21-2006 10:05 PM
I've never liked Zakks solos. Nothing but wankage to me, but each to their own.
Zakk is a great guitar player. In BLS he never tried to write anything complicated. He wanted everyone to enjoy simple music, and I absolutely love it. Solos sound great to me.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:06 PM

Yeah I know he's a good guitar player I've just never found his playing that interesting.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 10:07 PM
Yeah I know he's a good guitar player I've just never found his playing that interesting.
I pretty much agree, and also thats my opinion on Alexi

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:08 PM

A bit of a change of subject but what do you guys think of Alexis live guitar playing? I've seen a few vids and in some he's perfect and in others he's painfully sloppy, mainly from when he had his Jacksons.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:09 PM
I pretty much agree, and also thats my opinion on Alexi
Yeah I know what you mean. Alexis solos can get tedious after a while, but I much prefer him to Zakk.

If you need proof of Zakks amazing skill listen to his work with Ozzy on "Breakin' All the Rules" and the intro to "Rock 'n Roll Rebell".

MRDuCran 01-21-2006 10:11 PM

Hate Me isn't the worst song on FtR, WTF!

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:12 PM

I don't need any proof of Zakks amazing skill. I've acknowledged he's a very good guitarist, but he's not someone that I enjoy listening to.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:13 PM
Hate Me isn't the worst song on FtR, WTF!
lol opinions. It's a good song but I prefer all the others more, I don't know why.

Edit: Sorry about the double posts. Is there any way to add a quote into an already written post?

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 10:14 PM
Hate Me isn't the worst song on FtR, WTF!
Yeah I know I'm saying, thats like one of their two singles off the album.

Shattered_Future 01-21-2006 10:14 PM

Worst song on FTR...

I actually DO think it might be Hate Me. I really can't stand that song...
Edit: Sorry about the double posts. Is there any way to add a quote into an already written post?
The little button with the speech bubble is the quote button. Hit edit, copy what you want to quote, and insert. :thumb:

Well, maybe Hate Me isn't the worst, but it's one of the less good songs on the album.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:15 PM

Or Hellion if that counts, but it's not written by CoB so I guess it doesn't.

Shattered_Future 01-21-2006 10:19 PM

How can you not like Hellion? I thought that was one of their best covers.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:21 PM

Yeah, but it doesn't compare to their originals and I'm not really a fan of cover songs.

MRDuCran 01-21-2006 10:26 PM

Hate Me is great. I'm less fond of Taste of my Scythe.

And Kissing the Shadows.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:28 PM

Taste of my Scythe would be another one of the weaker tracks on the album. Kissing the Shadows and Mask of Sanity are still my favourites.

Toaster 01-21-2006 10:31 PM
A bit of a change of subject but what do you guys think of Alexis live guitar playing? I've seen a few vids and in some he's perfect and in others he's painfully sloppy, mainly from when he had his Jacksons.
More proof that ESP > Jackson. :p

I think the worst song on FTR is either Mask of Sanity or Taste of my Scythe. Really, all the songs are awesome.

eddie_the_great 01-21-2006 10:33 PM

Or proof that Alexi's getting better at guitar :D

I'm selling my Jackson V to get an ESP or Ibanez now, it's not really my kinda guitar.
