Dude, I listen to music from the external speaker on my phone sometimes and I've never not been able to make out a song.
Okay. Well, I just described what the speakers in the computer at my work do. It can make it exceedingly difficult to hear what's going on in some music. |
Damn, that sucks.
There hasn't been a sign of snow here since it all melted... a month and a half ago?
I know, Montreal was great. Had nice summer weather. But not here: http://www.globaltvcalgary.com/technology/story.html?id=2971210 50cm in one storm?!? |
**** yeah, I got approved for a new place to live today.
|
So my band (http://www.myspace.com/riverstonehaze) is supporting these guys in about 2 weeks. I'm wondering how awesome this will be.

http://www.myspace.com/starassassin
Thats suprising considering their music is boring and shitty and they sound like 3days grace wannabies and there really is no lower form of musician. I bet they get a lot of pussy though |
I just heard some new Deftones stuff. It's actually... good? Yes. I was shocked.

This song rules.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfTQfnvscpQ Good old DK. |
Diamond Eyes is a pretty awesome song, I'm looking forward to that CD. Have you heard the new Mudvayne? Great stuff.
|
I've been let down by Mudvayne consistently since Ld.50. Only heard snippets of the new Deftones stuff, but the 8 string guitar is definitely making a difference. I've always foud Deftones hit and miss, but definitely looking forward to getting hold of the album.
Gonna go and vote soon. |

As you probably know Chi Cheng had that car accident on the way from his brothers funeral and almost died. They were apparently writing a new CD at the time. They decided to get rid of all of the new material they had and start fresh with another bassist while Chi was still in his coma, and I think I remember reading that they said the new material really depicted how the felt at the time and was some of their most creative stuff. Needless to say I expect the CD to be phenomenal, despite Chinos aging voice. Thats a lot of speculation though |

This is definitely their best CD in a LONG time.
...really? This sounds like it could be any metal band, not Mudvayne. Ld.50 still blows me away with how much depth and subtlety it has, as well as that mind blowing bass tone. Ryan's the only part of them that's stayed consistently good and on top of his game, but listening to this track, I'm rethinking that now. |

Ryan has taken a step back in terms of creativity (individually anyway), as has their music. They aren't the same old math metal band, but the new sound they created over the past few CDs has really improved and this is definitely the peak of that style. By best CD in a long time, I really just mean since LD.50. I think it is easily a better overall CD then The End of all things to Come. I thought that CD only had like 4 or 5 great songs. I never really gave their other CDs much of a chance until now. They definitely sound a lot more like any old metal band now as they have too many catchy choruses and vocals, but overall you will not be dissapointed with this album. I definitely didn't post the best song on the album, hehe. This is probably my favourite right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkj6b6K84w0 Don't worry, Ryan still stands out a lot on a few tracks. |
The main reason I posted the first song is because of the badass breakdown and brilliant progression afterwards. Not to mention that drum beat that kicks in after the song. awesome.
|
It was the weird bits of Ld.50 that were actually memorable for me far more than these 'catchy' choruses. Listened to a few more tracks, and it's okay. I'd listen to it as a new band in it's own right, but as Mudvayne, it's just not right :(
Sikth carried on where Mudvayne left off I think. |
What, did you record it with one of these?

Well, yeah. It's Alberta. |
Took my Math Structures final today. I found it fairly br00tahl. I only need to get a 53% on it to pass the class, so the pressure wasn't on too much. I was really hoping to swing a B for the semester, though. **sigh**
Time to get an early start on quarks and other quantum physics pre-cursor material. |

They coming from down south doing a tour and they have a decent following. My birthday is also a few days before the gig so after we play I'm just going to get ruined. |
My tax return FINALLY came in the ****ing mail. Huzzah.

Direct Deposit ftw. Had mine back in the last week of Feb. Then I spent it all on my tuition. Ghey. So.....wanna buy a 2001 MM Stingray w/ stealth hardware, hipshot ultralite tuners, and OHSC for $700 shipped? |
that's a real good price. 4 or 5 strings?
|
4-string.
|
Send it to me. I'm good for the money. Honest.

It's in the mail now. Can your bank pay directly to my credit card to save me the trouble of making the payment? I sent you a mail with my credit card info as well. If not, I've included the bank account information for you. |

By the way, we record mostly with these: |
Shure SM-57s are nice for guitar amps and I like to use one for mic-ing my 4x10 while I DI my 1x18 (anything below 140hz)
The 58-Betas and the Sennheiser 832e (I think that's the model #) are the best mics I ever found for my vocals. I need to sell my mics and get some. |
There's another mic that he uses for the bass amp, but I can't recall what it is.
|
What do you use for drums then?
|
What do you use for drums then?
I'm cheap and use a 5-piece Nady mic set that I bought years ago on clearance for $149. It works, although covering all the toms is not easy at all and I generally have to snag another vocal mic to get the floor tom. I'd love to get one of those bullet mics that harmonica players use. They have such a sweet sound for vocals that reminds me of Portishead. |

OMGasm. Good reviews & decently priced. I wonder how well it mounts onto a mic stand... |
Nady make some good mics but usually I'd use way more than 5.
On a session I did on Tuesday I had planned 18 mics, then cut it back to 15 after realizing we only had 16 preamps lol. I used three in the kick drum, one out side the kick, 57 on snare top and bottom with a shot gun mic on the shell. An AKG C414 front of kit. Sennheiser MD421's on the toms and floor tom (top&bottom). Earthworks QTC50's as overheads. Those puppies are completely flat from 3hz to 50khz. It's ridiculous. Then I used a room mic placed in the top corner of the room facing a wall. I think that's 15 lol. I was doing some lazy man mixing whilst tracking and smashed the **** of the front of kit, brought in one of the inside kicks and the overheads and it was like instant Steve Albini drums. Ahhh I love having free access to thousands of dollars worth of gear XD |

I'll be in an actual recording studio over this weekend, and I'll let you know how the setup goes. I'm thinking about doing this with my rig: Preamp Dirty - HPF (140hz) - Compressor Channel 1 - Cab - Mic Preamp Clean - LPF (140hz) - Compressor Channel 2 - DI. How do you usually record basses? |
I'd give him a clean DI signal with no compression as well. Just use a DI box that has an XLR out and a link feature.
Honestly, I usually just go straight into the desk/preamp/whatever. But that depends on the bass and the amp that is available. For example I'm borrowing one of my tutors USA Fender Jazz's and that thing sounds ****ing awesome just straight in and nothing done to it. Same with the dude I'm recording this year, he brings in a Warwick Dolphin and that thing punches through straight away. If I was doing like posthardcore/metal/etc which needs a dirty tone I'd try get my hands on a tube amp of some kind. |
I'm currently recording for a 3-piece blues/rock type of thing.
http://www.myspace.com/vincentalexanderchavez (these are only acoustic demos) The guy will be playing a Fender Strat through a Marshall combo, overdriven (reminds me of Pearl Jam). I think beefing up the bass with a hair of overdrive will really help fill in the gap from lack of a second guitarist. I might just send the guy a wet and dry signal and let him do what he feels is best. I don't want to over-complicate, but I want to be ready so that I'm not wasting his time. I'd hate to come in as a hired gun and spend an hour getting the right tone. I'm already worried enough that I'll be doing quite a few takes. |
