I'm Charming 01-21-2006 12:41 AM

I have no interest in learning theory.

It just seems dull and boring. I've gotten to where I am without any and I don't see any need for it in the future.

Unhappy_poet/bassist 01-21-2006 01:42 AM

Sixpounder. I don't like this band that much. They make some really good songs, they makes some reallly ****ty songs.

Alexi blows as a writer and vocalist, they use too many keyboards, but the guitar solo's actually keep me slightly interested.

A-S-S-H-A-T 01-21-2006 01:43 AM

I hate the idea of teachers...
And besides, learning stuff is way more rewarding when you teach yourself.

You hit the nail on the head... or whatever they say.

Figuring things out yourself feels so much better then having someone point and tell you "now you do this, then this, little this way... noooo, all wrong, ahh much better" etc.

You came into the thread and engaged in mindless flaming.

Flaming isn't allowed.

Thus, I reported your comment.

That is all.

Duly noted.

If you don't like CoB perhaps stay out of the thread?

I'll gladly debate based on, facts and views. I won't engage in a mindless insult war though.

Its going to be hella hard you to play metal up to par with out any knowledge of theory.
If you don't know the right techniques there is a good chance you can blow you shoulder, wrist or elbow out. you can also give you self a bursitis.

That really isn't a flame BTW

Unhappy_poet/bassist 01-21-2006 02:14 AM

I didn't say I hate the band, I said they make some good songs and some bad songs, and I provided reasons.

Way to inconsistent in songwriting, overuse of keyboards, bad vocals. Reason enough?

What the hell does musical theory have to do with blowing a shoulder/wrist/elbow out?

That has to do with your picking technique NOT what scales/cords and such you know.

BTW. My picking technique is just fine.

MRDuCran 01-21-2006 04:45 AM

He's right. ^^^

I found out about the demonstration #2 in Passage to the Reaper, it's a Waltari song called "move".

As if that was that was flaming.

He gave his opinion on the band. Just because he isn't a complete fanboy like you doesn't mean he can't post in the thread.

MRDuCran 01-21-2006 10:38 AM

I have the song, I'll upload it later.
I also plan to transcribe most of it later too, I already know the backing, rhythm guitars and some of the licks. Hope you guys have GP if you want it.

repcak 01-21-2006 10:42 AM

Yea, well some of us aren't lucky enough to live in Europe.

If you don't know theory and attempt to be a musician for career, you're screwed. Plain and simple.

That's not entirely true.. I'd bet that 90% of band members out there know very little theory, if any at all. A studio musician is obviously a different story.

PsychoticFlubber 01-21-2006 12:08 PM
That's not entirely true.. I'd bet that 90% of band members out there know very little theory, if any at all. A studio musician is obviously a different story.
I want to know theory bad... I know it sounds nerdy, but I also want to be a studio musician... you know, making sick solo stuff... or be in a power metal (or death metal) band...

Toaster 01-21-2006 12:12 PM

I'd like to be a studio musician as well. It's a musical profession that's pretty steady work, and I'm confident that in a couple years I'll be capable of handling it. It's more of a wet dream than a goal, but it's nice to think about once in a while.

Shadows 01-21-2006 12:12 PM

Being a studio musician would be great, but as it stands I would need to build myself up a lot. It's not an easy thing. You have to be able to read music like a virtuoso.
That's not entirely true.. I'd bet that 90% of band members out there know very little theory, if any at all. A studio musician is obviously a different story.
I'd bet differently.

I know a bit theory right now, but I'm always ready to learn more. To me, being able to play things is only half of really being a musician. The other half comes from knowing how and why things work. And theory also seems like another way to put yourself further above non-musicians. Then again, I'm going to be a music major, so I'll be doing a hell of a lot of theory as time goes on.

Toaster 01-21-2006 12:23 PM

I actually think that music theory can hinder your creativity. If you know the "rules" too well, you start to think only in those terms, and your own writing can become stagnant and uninspired. I've heard many, many songs that don't follow conventional rules associated with theory at all, but they find their own feel and convey something that someone well-educated in music theory could not. That's partly why I think that very few successful artists know theory.

repcak 01-21-2006 01:04 PM

i play only for myself. if i want know some theory, i learn it or ask someone who knows. i only learn the theory i need to and want to. i know enough theory to know how to play, so i stopped learning theory and play only.

and i agree totally with this:
I actually think that music theory can hinder your creativity. If you know the "rules" too well, you start to think only in those terms, and your own writing can become stagnant and uninspired.
and that's the reason why i hate shredders and love Alexi Laiho... and how Alexi once said in guitar world: "some bands are super lame like dream theater" :thumb: i.a.w. Petrucci

I don't think this happens often. Theory teaches you how music works, but I'd be willing to bet that 90% of all guitarists who have mastered theory still write whatever they want, not thinking in terms of theory. Limiting yourself within those boundaries can do that, but only a very poor musician would do that to him/herself.
and that's the reason why i hate shredders and love Alexi Laiho... and how Alexi once said in guitar world: "some bands are super lame like dream theater" :thumb: i.a.w. Petrucci
Alexi is as much a shredder as any of those guys. He graduated from a music conservatory and knows an ungodly amount of music theory.

repcak 01-21-2006 01:31 PM

i see a difference of ppl who know theory and ppl who are shredders (without emotion) - beside that: did you have read the interview with alexi laiho in guitar world? (it was the cover with steve vai, alexi laiho and zakk wylde)

I'm Charming 01-21-2006 02:38 PM

I know what sounds good with what from playing alot. I don't need theory to tell me what sounds good with w/e.

I doubt most metal bands are well versed in theory.

Edit:

If anyone could upload the whole passage to the reaper video?

That would be great... I don't have/use bearshare.

I got Follow The Reaper.... I thought it was average. The riffage I found pretty bad but the guitar and keyboard solo's kept me into it. I've heard some tracks off HateCrewDeathroll that are like some of my 100 favorite songs of all time and I'm a little intrigued...

But man, they should really tell Alexi to get off the mike.
