The article said that this volcano's eruptions happen every 20-200 years, not that it's next one was due in 20-200 years. It's last was sometime in the 70s, I think.
so it could be anywhere from now until anther 170 years

Joe 01-11-2005 05:04 PM
I fell asleep in the middle of it, but only for half a minute or so. Turned out to be a good thing, since it refreshed and let me actually concentrate on the rest of it, rather than being tired. I don't think I've done well, though, and now I have several essays to do.
you've already started??? i start on friday. i hate exams. the week is ok, half days at school, but the studying sucks

Arucard 01-11-2005 05:05 PM

I think these conspiracy theories need to be put aside in order to help. I hope you did well btw Bartender, and i hope Bobo doesnt have a go at me for stealing his avatar idea.

munky_magik 01-11-2005 05:05 PM
yes, but that article said 20-200 yrs
i don't know, but i kno it's not necessarily one eruption
and yes it is
The fact remains that scientists remain hopeless in predicting nature.
I'm sure we all remember the major eruption of Mt. St. Helens years ago(I can't remember exactly when) where thousands of people were cost tehir lives because the scientists thought that you only got side-venting volcanoes in the tropics.
We know basically jack shit about nature, why it does what it does, and when it is likely to do it next.

he's justifying his answers and not just going "haha lolz, metalikaa r teh ssuzorzzz etcc...zzzzzz" so not really.

EDIT: From some of the old members, didn't Dboon's Ghost used to be a mod?

Hehe, I like exams.

They bring my grade up from skimping on homework, and I haven't studied for a test since geology in 7th grade.

He didn't justify anything. All it is are statements that aren't backed up with anything. "Their sellouts and shouldnt even be called metal". Example right there that is just mindless flaming.

munky_magik 01-11-2005 05:15 PM
He didn't justify anything. All it is are statements that aren't backed up with anything. "Their sellouts and shouldnt even be called metal". Example right there that is just mindless flaming.
if you read all his posts he conclusively provides evidence as to why he believes them to be sellouts.
That they shouldn't be called metal is harsh, but each to their own.

Arucard 01-11-2005 05:17 PM

Chill out DT, i think he just wants an argument. Dont listen to him.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 05:20 PM

Just get a little rattled when people call bands a sellout. Sorry :)

Rasta Rocker 01-11-2005 05:25 PM

I'm not an indie boy, but people call Modest Mouse sell outs too, and they clearly aren't (if you know the facts)...And maybe all this negative feedback MEtallica is getting may have an influence on their songwriting for the next album..it's clear the fans love the old stuff, even though it was 20 years ago, I think a majority of people will like it better, its due for a come back. The weightroom at my high school and the radio always play the old stuff, i love it

Joe 01-11-2005 05:25 PM
Just get a little rattled when people call bands a sellout. Sorry :)
lol, that's ok. i don't believe any band is a sellout, it takes a lot of hard work to put out an album

Rasta Rocker 01-11-2005 05:32 PM

People don't call bands sell outs depending on the work they put in their albums, they call them sell outs because they change their style of music to make more money.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 05:36 PM
People don't call bands sell outs depending on the work they put in their albums, they call them sell outs because they change their style of music to make more money.
Does that mean that a band can't change a style without being labeled a sellout then? Thats stupid.

Iron Man 01-11-2005 05:38 PM
People don't call bands sell outs depending on the work they put in their albums, they call them sell outs because they change their style of music to make more money.
Certainly worked for Metallica. Their S/T was alot more easily accessible, and even went so far as to make their first 4 more popular. Although I would have loved another ...AJFA, their change was a "success".

munky_magik 01-11-2005 05:41 PM
Does that mean that a band can't change a style without being labeled a sellout then? Thats stupid.
and herein lies the problem with calling a band a sell out. No body aside from them knows the motivation that they had behind changing their sound so it's difficult to say a band changed their style on purpose when you don't acually know why they did it.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 05:47 PM

But its Metallica, They obviously have more than enough money so they didn't do it for that. They wanted to try something new :)

They have enough money now, but pre-black album, they were still pretty underground. Financial Issues may well have influenced them to cut down on the progression, or it may not have.

Silenius 01-11-2005 05:54 PM

The only Metallica song I like is Orion because the guitar intro is absolutely awesome.

I'm speaking on the St.Anger album, not back then. They have more than enough money now, and they tried something new and all of a sudden their "Sellouts".

I see. I was caught up in the whole Black Album thing. St. Anger would definitely not have been done from a financial standpoint. Maybe that just what they felt like playing, meh. Certainly did not get good feedback, though.

I didn't like the album much but it did have some good songs. But just because an album isnt very good in people's eyes dosent mean their sellouts because every band makes a bad cd at some point or another.

Silenius 01-11-2005 06:03 PM

Speaking of sellouts, do you guys think Dimmu are sellouts?
There is after all a huge difference in their music after Stormblast. :(

Na, just tried something new

Bartender 01-11-2005 06:12 PM

I can't be bothered with quotes, sorry (should really be essaying).

gocaps - no, I haven't restarted properly. This is technically the tail-end of my last semester; I have this one exam (that I had today) and then these essays for Wednesday and Thursday, and then I'm finished, while the exam period continues. Which means I'm free until the 24th, I think.

Joe - hi

DT - DBoon is amongst the least mindless members we have :)

magik - yes, he used to be a mod :(

/smiley overload

For me Dimmu is dead in the way that Mayhem is, they're still active but completely transformed.

CaptainWaits 01-11-2005 07:12 PM

Yeh Dimmu's lost it's touch over the years....Haven't heard a lot of Mayhem though, so i wouldn't know

And now for something completely different:
I figured out what Uni's I'm gonna apply for.
Stirling - Evironmental science, Info Systems
Napier - Music
Leeds - Music
Manchester Metropolitian - Geogrpahy/Info systems
Newcastle - Geographic Information Science

If I do well this year then I should be able to meet all of the required points easily.

Riva 01-11-2005 07:18 PM

Good morning all. I had an awesome time clubbing last night. Guinesses, Coronas, Rum'n'cokes and two shots of Frangellico. Good times were had by all. :thumb:
