I think vocals can make or break bands.

But I'm a singer so yeah.
I think vocals can make or break bands.

But I'm a singer so yeah.
I guess I should specify what I mean. With death metal, and other similar niches, most of the time they seem very interchangeable - with lyrical direction usually being the only element modified. Now, when you take a vocalist that incorporates melody and pitch changes and the like, and brings something completely distinct to the band's sound, I totally agree with you. It's hard for me to reconcile that thinking with grind or death bands, since to me it seems like it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to find someone that can reproduce the desired growl/scream. Though if stage presence and everything else I noted earlier is a determining factor, than yeah, I can definitely see your point.

Edit: Lol, and looking at my post, I realize, "why wouldn't a band pay attention to the things I listed?" I doubt any death metal band striving for success would enlist a lobotomized grunt who stands on stage, drooling uncontrollably and filling their pants with feces. Eating my words, I am.

witchxrapist 03-11-2010 12:08 AM

I like when singers change pitches a lot. That's why I do that.

iranscam 03-11-2010 10:45 PM

bridge burner broke my nek

RetiredAt21 03-12-2010 01:08 PM

Uggggghhhhhhh Legion rules so ****ing hard. Band is insanely under-apreeshed.

iranscam 03-12-2010 02:13 PM

yeah they're basically on every local bill but they're always so ****ing intense. i'd say they're better than 90% of the touring bands who play here.

also, **** the facts, melvins, thou, salome, young widows, tombs, and end of a year playing in the next month or so

Countorus 03-12-2010 02:17 PM

would want to see thou and melvins so hard

Txus 03-12-2010 02:46 PM

salome are so boring but the rest of those bands are really good

i made a trip to boston last year to see the melvins who were great!

iranscam 03-12-2010 04:37 PM

I don't really listen to Salome much but I caught half of their set at Scion Rock Fest and it ruled.

Txus 03-12-2010 04:46 PM

they are probably better live

RetiredAt21 03-12-2010 07:24 PM

Legion is a band I would actually pay to see live.

Txus 03-16-2010 08:48 PM

I take back what I said about Daughters a while back. The new album ****ing slays.

RetiredAt21 03-16-2010 08:52 PM

I still haven't listened to it. Canada Songs and the s/t are both awesome.

AHandfulOfSweatpants 03-16-2010 09:03 PM

Hell Songs ruled. Everything about it was ace.

I remember getting to see them live just a few months after it was released. They were incredible live. I could smell the JD on the singer from 20 feet away.

RetiredAt21 03-16-2010 09:04 PM

I never really liked Hell Songs all that much idk why.

AHandfulOfSweatpants 03-16-2010 09:06 PM

Besides the obvious change in vox, the music wasn't too different.

I've always liked Daughters, but there was something about As the Sun Sets that was just, meh, indescribable. "Each Individual Voice..." was incredible, and "7744" still blows my mind.

Txus 03-16-2010 09:09 PM

As the Sun Sets rules so hard.

Jaundice 03-16-2010 09:54 PM

as the sun sets is boring

AHandfulOfSweatpants 03-16-2010 10:00 PM

Twaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Jaundice 03-16-2010 10:02 PM

i remember you guys used to make fun of me for liking white belt when i first came here and now yuou're all creaming over daughters, sawtooth grin, me and him call it us, as the sun sets

lol

Txus 03-16-2010 10:04 PM

i made fun of you because that was all you were listening to

Jaundice 03-16-2010 10:04 PM

nah i was into Wolf Eyes and Of Montreal too

Angmar 03-16-2010 10:06 PM

death to false grind

AHandfulOfSweatpants 03-16-2010 10:15 PM

It's the closest thing you could label them. That or intense unnerving southern rock.

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 06:22 AM
as the sun sets is boring
looooooooool!!

Moon Flavor 03-17-2010 07:20 AM

i don't get as the sun sets.

i mean i like them, they're cool. but you guys LOVE them and i have no idea why

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 07:21 AM

Idk they were one of my entry-level "grind" bands.

Txus 03-17-2010 08:02 AM

i think they are fun to listen to

been listening to bunch of in disgust lately

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 08:04 AM

In Disgust destroys.

HighandDriving 03-17-2010 08:12 AM

Would you guys label As The Sun Sets as white belt?

Also the band is great but not God tier amazing.

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 08:12 AM

As the Sun Sets aren't a white belt band. Daughters is. Nothing against Daughters. :>

Pete 03-17-2010 08:14 AM
death to false grind
grind to false death

DBlitz 03-17-2010 08:15 AM

in disgust are good

can't remember the last time i listened to as the sun sets but i never found them amazing and i wouldn't make fun of something who found them boring

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 08:17 AM

lol I don't understand you guys at all.

HighandDriving 03-17-2010 08:17 AM
As the Sun Sets aren't a white belt band. Daughters is. Nothing against Daughters. :>
Ya I agree they aren't white belt.

Daughters new release isn't even white belt, it's like noise-core. Which I guess ppl would argue are the same thing.

RetiredAt21 03-17-2010 08:18 AM

Noisecore???
