Apparently the supernova/nova that produced the crab nebula was observed in 1054 but the actual event happened some time around 5,000 BC when you consider how long it'd take light to travel that distance.

No, you'd have to travel faster than light to get there to set up the telescope. Unless you're talking about people already there other than us.
