I suppose having a modicum of intelligence is also important when reading the Bible yes!
Hey, you have to take the good with the bad :p

Nostalgia 02-03-2009 12:08 AM

The only Christians that truly annoy me are the ones who inherit their beliefs from their parents. A girl I know is so God-obsessed through her parents' beliefs it's ridiculous, and she has no explanations for her beliefs - it's just the regular ol' "it is because it is" scenario that angers me.

But whatever.

Dimmu Burger 02-03-2009 12:08 AM
basically mcp, when I said I know the nature of religious discussion, its happening right now

We can have this is discussion which is actually intellectual (a rarity for R&M)

but it boils down to faith

You either have it or you don't
yeah prettymuch. and it's hard for non-believers to grasp the whole faith thing, so I've seen.

Hey mister take a look at that edited part!

I do agree, the Old Testament is filled with "seedy" characters!

I can understand that. I feel that even though my parents are Christians I came to be one on my own in a way because I have very different beliefs than my parents do, even within Christianity.
Sorry. The time I felt the closest to God was when I was 11, oddly enough. Yeah I went to a Christian school so I was surrounded with it all day, but even when I was home I was praying all the time. Every situation I was in I prayed about. It was like I talked to God every few minutes about everything and I felt that he heard me. I felt very close to him then. I haven't really been able to get back to that, but I try to talk to him as often as possible, even if I forget a lot. He hears me, as dumb as it sounds, I can tell.
Ah, I felt that when I was religious, but looking back I know why I felt that way. It had little to do with anything besides thinking that someone was listening to me.

How can you tell? Being serious, but unless god talks back to you I don't see how you can tell that he's listening.

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:11 AM

Its probably all chemically induced within your brain but there is a feeling maaaaaaaaan

adb 02-03-2009 12:11 AM

and I know this is an inherent logical falacy

but Christians tend to be extroverts and Athiests/agnostics tend to be introverts

It is a social norm to believe in God (at least where we live)

I don't see how you can possibly say that with any certainty.

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:12 AM

I know plenty of shy Christians and plenty of loudmouthed Athiests. It is perfectly acceptable in most parts of the US to have backlash against Christianity (which in turn leads idiots to bash all religions on the same basis)

AA-12 02-03-2009 12:12 AM

thats because introverted shy nerds like to disagree and hate happy people (christians)

Same for me. I only thought someone was listening to me because I was told that my whole life. At the same time though, I'm not going to bash people who believe because I can see where they come from.

I never said I was certain, the qualifier "tend" is my bff

example:

the internet is where non-theists tend to gather

theists tend to gather in churches

It's like being in love, you just know. You also see the results of it in your life. You ask for things (within reason of course) and you get them etc.

RiceMonster 02-03-2009 12:15 AM

not all Christians are in-your-face happy people.

trolling but there's a shitload of cases of that

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:15 AM

One day I was camping with my ex, and we were sitting in a secluded part of the woods in North Carolina, and we were looking up at the stars, and I realized I didn't love her anymore, and that is when I knew God existed.

Gay.

Belief has all to do with life experience even discussing it is almost a fruitless endeavor

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:17 AM

As many kids fall into deep christianity with no real basis for belief as do Athiesm* though

*the kind of angsty spiteful athiesm i think josh is talking about

same way with religion though.

Nostalgia 02-03-2009 12:18 AM

It's still fun to mess with Christians because they're so serious about their beliefs. Like, I had 45 minute conversation with this Mexican inferior about if we had pre-determined destiny.

I could tell she was getting angry by the dirty brown complexion fading off into a red, cherry like color.

lol

yeah I had a little discussion w/ my Christian manager at work on Saturday
his explanations were funny

RouteOne 02-03-2009 12:20 AM

In the end, I don't care what people believe as long as they aren't stupid about it.

that's why I said "within reason." and yeah of course I could doubt that I get things from God, but there is no other reason for me to be as successful as I am. I have no education and nothing to offer the world whatsoever and I'm a jerk, yet I have a great career, an awesome wife and daughter and I own a home and two cars. The way I look at it, God is taking good care of me.

faith is belief without evidence

so theists are stupid by default?

Nostalgia 02-03-2009 12:23 AM

I'm so used to saying "**** of christ" because of my constant metal listening that I've been unable to divorce my actual beliefs from my more satirical ones.

I'm like an onion, with many layers of complete bullshit.

maybe you have those things because, idk, you worked for them?

Doesn't that irk you that you think all of your accomplishment are essentially god's and not yours?

Really I haven't worked for these things. I'm not the kind of person who my job should've hired. I''m not the kind of person my wife should have married. I don't deserve to have such an awesome daughter and life etc. I'm lazy and selfish. There is no other explanation IMO.

who says his belief in god had anything to do with him earning those things? Not to be an ***, but from his own reasoning god gave him those things, he didn't earn them. "he's taken care of".
